Chapter 25

Where am I? I can't see anything.

I stretched my arm out in the dark. I tried to see if there is something I could touch or get a hold of.

All I feel and hear is the cold wind and the dancing of the trees. It's very chilly.

Am I dreaming? I was eating chicken a while ago.

Suddenly, light came from behind me. I turned around and saw trees, I was in the forest. I looked around but there's nothing that would catch my attention.

Little by little, the surroundings started to become foggy, it was embracing the forest slowly.

I won't see anything if I stay longer, I need to get out of here.

I tried to move, but somehow, I'm paralyzed. I'm in my own body yet I don't feel in control of it. My heart was starting to beat so fast, my hands will sweat soon.

Move, damn it!

"Avery..." Someone whispered behind me. I froze, literally.

My heart is hammering in my chest, I could hear it. I wanted to turn around but I couldn't.

I could move a while ago, but something happened or someone, preventing me from moving on my own will.

"Avery..." It said my name again. I can feel it slowly circling me. I closed my eyes.

Shit, shit, shit.

I love horror movies but I don't want it happening to me, I mean who does? I felt something touching my arm, it was cold, like snow.

I flinched, I tried moving away but again, I couldn't. All I could do was stand and wait for it to do something.

"It is inevitable." It whispered right in front of me. Oh god. I can feel its ice cold breath, breathing down on me.

I opened my eyes and came across a black figure standing a few distance from me, its head was down and is cloaked all the way to the top, it was goddamn floating.

Aight I'm out, it's floating.

And for the first time in the dream, I screamed. I tried moving away but the figure only started getting closer, and closer.

Slowly, it was floating towards me. And then, it suddenly flew its arms out and held both my shoulders.

Its head then looked up faster than light and I made eye contact with it.

I couldn't see the face, but the eyes were white as snow. The cloak completely covered its whole face.

"IT IS INEVITABLE." It said again. I flinched once more and tried to shake it off of me.

"Get off of me!" I shouted.

"KATIE!" It screamed at my face, its mouth was frightening, it had long teeth, and a disgusting tongue. It started to move towards my face and all I could do was move away.

When it almost touched me, I woke up.

I slapped my forehead with my right arm and sighed, remembering it was only a dream.

I sat up and leaned my back onto the sofa. I remember falling asleep here a few hours after I've eaten breakfast.

And when its something I would like to recall again, I write it down and read it over and over until I can vividly remember what occurred in those dreams.

The small paper said, tag.

What do they mean by tag? Putting the paper in my pocket, I stood up and told Sen I need to pee.

She nodded and let me be on my way. I was walking but I was not in my right mind, the words were repeating inside my head, playing like a loop.

Great, I wake up to this.

Van was sitting in the chair at the corner of the room reading some magazine and Sen was cleaning my room.

I sprung from the bed, heading directly towards my closet to look for the towel but it wasn't there, I looked for it in the other chair that wasn't occupied and it still wasn't there.

Just where did I leave it yesterday.

The car drove all the way to the forest, deeper than where we were before. Trees of different kind passed by.

I was looking out the window and just focusing on the clouds paying no attention to anyone of anything.

This is my alone time.

I closed my eyes and imagined birds flying across the sky, in flocks or solo. Hearing their voices, singing, talking to each other where only they can understand.

I imagined a plane passing by and exploding, ah. Music to my ears.

I imagined the sun shining so brightly, so bright that if you look at it for a second you'll burn your eyes.

I imagined rain falling down and the clouds going dark, thunder hitting every corner of the earth.

Ah, what life.

A few minutes later, the car came to an halt. The driver got out and so did Van and Sen.

I followed them out and stepped on the forest floor. I closed the door and looked at my surroundings.

Just like the arena, people were scattered everywhere. There were those in groups and some were alone. They were talking amongst one another.

There was this long table where food and drinks were served.

Now this I'm prepared for.

The crowd opened a path when they saw me. More specifically, what I'm wearing. It was a symbol that I'm one of the participants. It was made so rarely, it was different from others.

Van led me to a line of people. It was the girls, they were lined up side by side and was facing the forest.

I turned back around and started to walk towards the only space left.

Late = Bad time management.

I can feel eyes on me when I walked to the only space. The hair on my arms started to rise.

I stood on the circle platform that was left, just like every participant. They were stiff and was staring straight ahead into the forest.

What now?

I felt it again, the cold wind blew on my face, taking a few of my loose hair with it, covering areas of my face. I fixed it and then suddenly, it was quite.

Someone was coming.

I turned around and witnessed the crowd bowing down, kneeling on one knee, facing only one direction.

I looked towards it and saw him. Goosebumps started to crawl their way up my body, making me feel nervous. It was him, those dull gray eyes, I could recognize it anywhere.

I looked at him, he held no emotion and was flatly looking at nowhere in particular. He looks bored yet the aura around him says otherwise.

I can't seem to point it out yet but it was dark, empty, it was like his eyes. It somehow reminded me of black.

He was dressed in a medieval shirt that was paired with a trench coat that was long enough for his frame.

He was tall, his build can be seen by his attire. It's practically see through damn, how many hours in the gym?

He wore a sword that matched his high black boots, white pants, and attire.

He was looking around, surveying the area, then his eyes landed on mine. I turned around and breathed in air through my nose. I would definitely faint if I stared longer, that man is a living mythical creature.

More specifically, a greek god.

I was embarrassed, I just checked him out and he caught me. I wish the floor would open a portal and swallow me down.

I didn't turn around again and patiently waited for the game to begin.

As if on cue, the speaker turned on and the host started to talk through it, gaining everyones attention.

Though I couldn't see it visibly, it was the only thing my mind was focused on at the moment.

The clock started to move, from 20 to 19 and so on. I shook my whole body, stretching every inch knowing I'd be running, jumping and even hiding for an hour.

This has got to be the easiest part of the game, no joke. Running is part of me, everyday in the military I run laps more than a hundred to condition my body for the job.

The clock counts to 4.

3,

2,

1,

0,

Bang, the sound of a gun going off signifying the end of the countdown and the start of the game. With so much ease, I ran.

I jumped over roots that were visible on the ground and dodged trees that was in my way. I followed the direction of the ribbons tied to the trees.

Left, right, I have gone to every direction where the ribbons lead me and did not stop.

Three minutes into the game, I saw a lake up ahead. This spiked my thirst, so I decided to stop for a moment and take a sip.

Checkpoint.

I came close to the water, crouched down and took a scoop of it, drinking it. Sipping the water from my hand, I swallowed it all and did the same thing over and over again until I was satisfied.

I took a seat at the big rock next to the lake, wanting to calm down for even a minute.

I took a deep breath and let it all out, repeating it until I felt my heart calm down for a bit.

I checked my watch, I have a minute left before the next bang.

Theoretically speaking, they didn't say anything against having watches with us.

I stood up and dusted myself, hopping off of the rock. I glanced at the water and saw it glisten with the help of the sun. It was breathtaking, beautiful.

From what I heard, werewolves have great nose, which means they can smell stuff better than humans. A thought crossed me.

I took off running, purposely running to the water instead of going over it. This will wash away my scent, giving away nothing but the smell of water.

I'm not dumb enough to not know what they can and what they can't do.

My lower half was now wet and my weight became heavier than before due to the water soaking my clothes.

I got out of the water hurriedly and started to run again to the ribbons direction, dodging anything that was in my way.

Then the bang was heard, the signal of the It following us through the forest.

Oh shit. When I took a drink and stopped for a bit, one thing slipped my mind.

These werewolves are fucking fast.

I ran faster than before, putting more power in my legs and focused on going straight ahead.

And me being the idiot I am, my feet caught on a root and I face-planted.

Sen's mouth went wide, she didn't know Katie's occupation mainly because she doesn't talk about it, but also because she doesn't look the type.

The woman whistled, somehow proud of Katie, knowing her occupation, she understood what Van is saying.

She is not fragile, she is built different.

A combatant.

A Captain.

A warrior.

A fighter.

A protector.

A woman who stands on top of the food chain, that's Katelyn Avery Adams, the Captain of the Alpha unit, the soldier who saved hundreds of lives and took twice of it.

She was rumored to be the mysterious woman with a mysterious name, but that's not her, she is far from mysterious.

She's the rumored battle hero, the one who saved a whole city and no one died at her command that time.

She fought for her life too many times in battle, saving her comrades, almost losing her life for them.

She's much more than the rumors.

She saved hundreds, no, thousands of people in just a day with only a gun and a hundred soldiers with her.

She's the War Angel.
