Chapter 21
Twenty-One
The warm summer air blew through Ronan’s hair as he soared over the small township of Monroe. Marcela and Tyler sat patiently in his arms while Caleb clutched his heavy black boots for dear life, dangling as he zipped through the starlit sky.
A wave of excitement and relief rushed through his body to finally be rid of Misty. She was the most annoying person he’d ever encountered, human or otherwise.
A great weight had been lifted from his shoulders as the phantom sound of her nasally voice echoed through his ears then disappeared. Next, he had to focus on getting the other three humans home so he could go to speak with Sean. If all went according to plan, he could leave with him and Autumn’s father to embark on the long journey home to Surge.
Caleb lived close to Misty. Ronan’s communicator beeped, revealing coordinates 41°18’8.728”N, 74°10’31.227”W.
The rectangular structure he resided in was much smaller than Misty’s home and surrounded by a dark, dense forest of trees.
Ronan lowered Caleb to the ground before landing. Unlike Misty, nobody came outside to greet him. His home remained dark, like he lived by himself.
“Well, I guess this is goodbye,” Caleb turned to leave. Thank you for the ride?—”
Ronan twisted his mouth to the side. “You’re such a disappointment. The hate you demonstrated toward Autumn was unforgivable and rather disgusting if I may say so myself. Despicable for a former lover with no cause.”
Caleb’s cheeks flushed and lips moved as if he wanted to speak.
“Choose your next words wisely, human. I’m in no mood for retaliation,” He tightened his fists. Marcela and her son took a few steps in retreat, eyes growing wide.
Caleb took a deep breath, settling himself. “Honestly, I’ve had time to think about my behavior and I’m sorry for the way I treated her. She didn’t deserve the hate I gave. But I’m more sorry she got tangled up with someone like Dante. He destroyed her life and any chance we ever had of being happy together.”
“Contrary to popular belief, he saved all of you actually,” Ronan ran a hand through his hair, tousling the short spiky strands. “It’s all thanks to him that your planet is still in existence, even if the way he handled it was rather foolish and reckless. And you never deserved Autumn. She was never your first choice. Am I right?”
Caleb’s lips moved. “How did you?—”
Ronan’s mouth flattened. “Don’t answer, just think about it. She’s nothing but a memory to you anyway. Now run along, home before I change my mind.”
He ushered him away, waving his hands. Caleb paused and looked over his shoulder one last time before knocking on his door. The lights turned on and voices spoke from inside the dwelling. He was allowed inside, and once again, the body of a parent fainted on the floor.
He sighed a deep regretful sigh at how much this idiot had hurt Autumn, but he didn’t have time to fixate. He grabbed hold of Marcela and Tyler, and they made their way off into the starry night. All he could think about was how he was going to explain this situation to Sean and if he would consider them endgame.
