The scent of copper still clung to Anna as she sat in the passenger seat of the armored SUV. Beside her, Aiden’s hands were tight on the wheel, the flickering streetlights of the city illuminating the sharp, dangerous angles of his face.
As they cleared the final security gate of the Thorne estate, every guard in the perimeter stood at a crisp, terrifying attention.
To them, she wasn't just Miss Anna, the soft spoken teacher from St. Jude’s, she was the woman who had just turned a construction site into a graveyard to bring their King home.
"The kids first," Anna said, her voice dropping into that chillingly calm register.
"Then we deal with the vermin."
The moment the front doors swung open, the house felt like a pressurized chamber. Anna didn’t stop moving, she cut through the foyer like a cold wind, heading straight for the panic room in the east wing.
"Vanessa! Open the door!"
The locks hissed, and the reinforced steel slid back to reveal Vanessa standing there, clutching a kitchen knife like a talisman, her face pale. But behind her, the twins were safe. Before she could speak, two small blurs of motion collided with Anna and Aiden.
"Mommy! Daddy!"
Mia’s voice was a high, frantic melody as she launched herself at Anna.
Anna dropped to her knees, the Wraith dissolving instantly as she gathered the small girl into her arms.
She buried her face in Mia’s hair, breathing in the scent of lavender and home, while Leo collided with Aiden’s good side.
Aiden hoisted the boy up, his expression softening into something fiercely protective.
Anna’s eyes scanned the room. She noticed the small details, the half finished coloring book on the floor, the two glasses of milk.
And she noticed the absence.
Sofia was gone.
Anna didn’t mention it. She didn't want to poison the air while the children were clinging to them. Instead, she leaned into Aiden, the four of them forming a tight, unbreakable circle in the center of the vault.
For a few minutes, the blood and the fire of the site didn't exist.
Once the twins were tucked into bed, guarded by two men, Aiden and Anna retreated to the master suite.
The air in the bathroom was thick with steam, the mirrors clouded and dripping. Aiden sat on the edge of the deep marble tub, his shirt discarded, revealing the angry, red graze across his shoulder. Anna moved between his legs, her fingers dipping into a bowl of warm, antiseptic water.
"You're too quiet," Aiden rumbled, his voice thick with the aftershock of adrenaline.
?"I’m just thinking about how much of this world I would have had to burn to the ground if anything had happened to you,"
Anna whispered, her voice a ghost of a sound, yet vibrating with a lethal, absolute certainty.
?Aiden reached out, his hand steadying her as he pulled her closer. "I'm here, baby. I'm not going anywhere."
She dragged the cloth across his skin, her touch clinical until her eyes met his.
She dropped the cloth. Her hands, still slightly stained with the grit of the docks, slid up his chest to lock behind his neck. Aiden’s hands found her waist, pulling her flush against him.
The kiss was a collision, desperate, hungry, and fueled by the raw, primal realization that they were both still breathing.
He lifted her onto the marble counter, his mouth moving to the sensitive skin of her throat. Anna let out a low, jagged moan, her fingers tangling in his dark hair. The steam seemed to intensify, the heat between them eclipsing the trauma of the day.
Every touch was an assertion of ownership, a fierce, steamy reclamation.
He tasted like smoke and rain, she tasted like fire.
They made love with a frantic, rhythmic intensity on the cool stone, their bodies slick with sweat and steam, a silent, carnal vow that no enemy would ever breach the sanctuary they were building between them.
Aiden spent the morning in the study with Marcus, who was propped up on a recliner, looking pale but typically stubborn.
?"Since you refuse to rest like a normal patient, make yourself useful," Aiden said, his tone light with a rare bit of dark humor.
"Arrange the compensation for the families of the men we lost at the site."
?"I’m really not feeling the love here," Marcus rasped, leaning back against his pillows.
?"We have moles, Marcus," Aiden said, his voice dropping an octave. The humor evaporated instantly, leaving Marcus visibly sobered.
?"I’ve trained these men, Aiden," Marcus sighed, sounding every bit as tired as he looked.
"I’ve bled with them. It’s hard to believe one of them would sell us out."
?The heavy study door opened as Anna walked in, her expression carved from ice.
"It’s not just a guard following a rotation. It was someone who knew our domestic rhythm, exactly when I’d be playing mom and when you’d be left alone."
?Aiden knew exactly who Anna was referring to, though it was a bitter pill to swallow. It was one thing to be a social climber, it was another to put her own niece and nephew in the crosshairs of a war.
?Sofia.
?Aiden had always known she was the shadow to Isabella’s light, a sister who harbored more envy than affection since they were children. His late wife had spent years defending Sofia’s behavior out of pure, sisterly love, but now, that protection had finally run out.
"Let's test it," Aiden said, his eyes darkening with a lethal intent.
?They orchestrated a play.
?Anna staged a loud, confidential conversation in the kitchen, making sure the walls, and whoever was listening, heard the details of a high-stakes meeting with European investors at a secluded industrial park.
She made a point of insisting Marcus stay behind to rest, loudly declaring that she would handle Aiden’s security herself.
?The next afternoon, Marcus leaned against the front door, playing the part of the anxious, recovering guard perfectly as Anna and Aiden climbed into the vehicles.
To flush out the rats, the performance had to be flawless.
The three car convoy pulled out of the estate, led by Aiden’s signature black sedan.
?Guided by Anna’s mastery of tactical maneuvers, they executed an effortless switch at a pre arranged hidden turnout. As the decoy convoy continued on, Anna and Aiden watched the overhead drone feed from the safety of a nondescript vehicle three blocks away.
?The moment the convoy hit a sharp corner, the world on the screen exploded. A grenade launcher, fired from a nearby rooftop, turned the lead car into a roaring fireball.
?"There it is," Anna whispered, her voice cold and devoid of surprise.
Back at the estate, Silas, one of Marcus’s favorites, was tucked away in the laundry room, his fingers flying across a burner phone before he pulled Sofia into a desperate embrace.
?"Did it work?" Sofia hissed.
?"The car went up," Silas whispered. "Valenti said we’d be rich. we can finally leave..."
?"You're not going anywhere," a voice cut through the air.
?They bolted apart. Anna stood in the doorway, silhouetted by the harsh fluorescent light. She looked bored, but the weight of the gun in her hand suggested otherwise.
?"Anna! We were just..." Sofia’s face drained to a ghastly white.
?"Quiet, Sofia. Let the adults speak," Anna said, her eyes locked on Silas.
"Marcus treated you like a brother, and you sold him out for a woman who’d trade you to the devil for a handbag."
"I was just worried!" Sofia stammered as Aiden stepped into the room. His eyes were narrowed, his presence suffocating; the King was beyond furious.
?"Take him to the basement," Aiden commanded the guards, his voice like grinding stones. "As for her, confine her to a room. I’ll deal with her later."
?That night, the estate’s basement, a forbidden zone the twins didn't even know existed, glowed with a clinical, surgical light. Silas sat strapped to a chair, his frantic weeping swallowed by the soundproofed walls.
?Aiden stood over him, the undisputed Mafia King. He didn't need a blade to be terrifying, his shadow alone seemed to choke the room.
He leaned in, his voice a low, ghostly threat.
"Marcus loved you like a brother, Silas. You didn't just betray me; you betrayed him."
?Anna watched from the darkness, arms crossed. This was Aiden’s empire, and he was both jury and executioner. She had provided the prey, but she would leave the purge to the King.
?Upstairs, a different judgment fell. Sofia sat in the library, shaking like a leaf as Aiden entered.
?"You’re Isabella’s sister," he said, his voice ice cold. "The twins' aunt." He paused, the weight of the past filling the silence.
"That blood is the only reason you’re still breathing. But if I ever see your face within a hundred miles of my home or my children again, I will forget who your sister was. Get out."
?It was an agonizing decision to let a traitor walk, but it was his final act of devotion to his late wife. He knew the risk, that Sofia might return to stab him in the back, but he had fulfilled Isabella’s wish to spare her blood.
?Anna saw the turmoil burning in his eyes. She stepped into his space, grounding him. "Don't worry," she whispered, looking deep into his gaze.
"If the time comes and she returns, I’ll take care of her myself. Isabella won't be able to blame you for my hand."
?They shared a long, silent embrace, a moment of profound understanding that meant more to Aiden than he could ever put into words.
