Chapter 24
The two days Elena had allowed were almost up, and the pressure was becoming unbearable. The city felt like a pile of dry wood, ready to explode into a massive conflict at any moment.
Inside the suffocating, mahogany walled lounge of a private club, Lorenzo Valenti sat in the flickering shadows, his face a map of desperation and decaying power. Across from him sat Enzo Rossi, the man who had successfully intercepted and rescued Mia from her kidnapper during the school breach.
?Lorenzo was a cornered animal. With Aiden hitting his primary shipping hubs and the "Black Hole" protocols effectively turning his offshore millions into a public donation to law enforcement, he was grasping at the fraying edges of his empire.
To the rest of the underworld, he was already starting to look like a ghost.
?"The Thorne family is a cancer, Enzo," Lorenzo hissed, leaning forward in his wheelchair until the light caught the yellowed whites of his eyes.
"They are consuming this city. I am offering you the only thing that can stop them, a merger. Your sister, Vanessa, is of age. She marries into my family, tying our bloodlines together. Our combined military power would crush Aiden Thorne in a single night".
?Enzo Rossi swirled his dark wine, his face showing no emotion.
Unlike Lorenzo, he didn't hate the woman they called the Wraith.
He still remembered the night she had chosen to save him during the Syndicate War.
Even during the Night of Heirs, she had spared his family.
He looked over at his sister, Vanessa, knowing she was only alive because Anna had shown a mercy that no one expected from a legend like her.
To Lorenzo, family was a set of pawns to be sacrificed, to Enzo, family and power were the only things that held weight in a world of shadows.
?"I will consider it," Enzo finally said, his voice as sharp and cold as an icicle.
?Enzo had been raised in a world where bowing was considered a death sentence. He was tempted by the prospect of crossing Aiden Thorne and the Wraith to consolidate his own power, yet he felt a pull toward something he hadn't acknowledged in years.
He remembered his aunt, a woman who had shielded him from the worst of the mafia's brutality and taught him the basic human virtues of gratitude, loss, and remorse.
Under the cover of the table, Enzo pulled out a burner phone and sent a two word message to Anna: Marriage alliance.
?The silence in the room shattered as Lorenzo's phone began to vibrate with relentless, back-to-back calls from his lead tech specialist.
In their circle, the staff knew better than to interrupt a high level meeting, the persistence of the ringing made it clear that whatever was happening couldn't wait another second.
?With a tight, apologetic nod to Enzo, Lorenzo excused himself to take the call.
"Sir, there's activity on the encrypted server. Someone is digging into the Wraith's historical files, data that hasn't been touched in years".
?Lorenzo answered with a dismissive tone. "It's that same investigator. Let him waste his time."
?"No, sir," the technician stammered, his voice trembling. "It's not him. It's the Thorne system. They're using a level of brute force decryption I've never seen. They're breaking in".
?If Lorenzo could have walked, he would have bolted from his chair.
"Thorne? They shouldn't even have a whisper of that information. Sofia... that bitch".
He felt a cold dread settle in his stomach.
Sofia must have blabbered the truth of Anna's heritage just to ensure she got the last laugh, even from the grave.
If Anna discovered who she truly was, that her blood was the very thing Lorenzo had tried to exterminate, he would be a dead man before the sun went down.
"We have to eliminate them," Lorenzo muttered, his voice spiraling into mania. "The alliance has to happen tonight. Once Vanessa is a Valenti, Enzo will be forced to use his power to protect me."
?Vanessa approached her brother as Lorenzo retreated to the balcony to scream orders into his phone. "Enzo... do I have to marry into that house?".
?Enzo looked at her, seeing their mother's soft features reflected in her face. He had tried to protect her, sending her abroad to study corporate law, only to eventually drag her back into his orbit to act as a plant within the Thorne empire, a move that had already nearly cost her her life.
?"Do you want to?" Enzo asked quietly.
"You know I would do anything you ask of me, Enzo," she replied, her loyalty a heavy burden on his conscience.
?When Lorenzo returned, his eyes were bloodshot. He looked at Enzo with a desperate expectation. "The deal, Rossi. Give me your word."
?Enzo stood up, straightening his jacket with a slow, deliberate motion.
He glanced at his burner phone, still no response.
He knew Anna had seen his message, her silence was a test, a cold weight in his pocket that told him she was waiting to see which side he would choose.
Turning his gaze to Lorenzo, his voice was like ice.
"The deal is off, Lorenzo. I'm not marrying my sister into a sinking ship."
?With his world collapsing, Lorenzo played his final, radioactive ace.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a tarnished gold locket, snapping it open to show Enzo the photograph inside.
Enzo froze. He had spent the better part of a decade and a small fortune searching for the owner of that specific piece of jewelry.
?"Take out Aiden Thorne," Lorenzo bargained, his voice a low, oily crawl. "Kill him tonight, and I will give you the coordinates to the person you've been hunting for years".
?Enzo's teeth ground together so hard he felt the vibration in his skull. He hated being manipulated, but this locket was the only breakthrough he'd had in a lifetime of searching.
?"Okay," Enzo said through gritted teeth.
"No," Lorenzo smiled, sensing the shift. "I know you, Enzo. You'll leave here and try to find a way to kill me instead. Make the call now. Order the hit while I'm watching".
?Back at the Thorne estate, the atmosphere was a startling contrast to the predatory darkness of the city.
It was Aiden's birthday, and despite the war raging in the streets, Anna and the children had spent the afternoon preparing a surprise.
The estate was lit with a warm, amber glow that felt like a sanctuary.
?Aiden pulled into the driveway, the gravel crunching under his tires. As he alighted from the car, he saw Anna walking toward him. She wasn't wearing her tactical gear or the cold expression of the Wraith. She was smiling, her eyes bright with a light that had only recently returned to her.
?They met in the center of the driveway, rushing into a desperate, crushing embrace that served as their only lifeline.
Aiden pulled her back to kiss her deeply, the taste of salt and survival anchoring him to the moment.
From the direction of the porch, he heard the muffled giggles of Leo and Mia, though their faces remained hidden behind the flower garden.
?"What are you up to?" Aiden asked with a soft laugh, his hand resting on the small of her back.
"Not telling," Anna teased, her voice light.
?But as they turned toward the house, the air suddenly changed.
It was a shift only those born of violence could detect, a drop in pressure, a silence in the surrounding woods that felt too intentional.
Anna's intuition, honed through years of surviving the impossible, went on high alert.
She scanned the treeline, her gaze snapping toward the upper floors of the house, certain that eyes were watching them from the shadows.
She remembered those two words from Enzo, Marriage Alliance. It felt like a heavy, ominous warning, but she had stayed her hand, not responding as she waited to see which way he would jump.
?Has he finally made his move? she thought, her pulse quickening. Has he chosen to go against us?
?Then she saw it, the unmistakable glint of a sniper's scope catching the dying light. It was a reflection she could pinpoint blindfolded. The beam was tracking across the grass, crawling toward the exact spot where the children were hiding.
?"The kids!" Anna screamed.
?She bolted toward the flowerbeds, her movements a blur of pure instinct. Aiden was only a half step behind her, his weapon clearing his holster before his mind could even register the threat.
But as Anna reached the edge of the garden, a secondary instinct, the one that had saved her a hundred times in the field, screamed at her to turn back. In a heartbeat, she realized the glint was a decoy, a calculated distraction to draw them into the open.
?The real threat was behind them.
?Anna spun around, her eyes widening as she saw a second red dot center directly over Aiden's heart.
There was no time to pull him down and no time to find cover.
She didn't think, she simply reacted with a primal ferocity.
She threw herself in front of him, acting as a human shield, and shoved Aiden toward the ground with every ounce of her strength.
?The silence of the evening was shattered by the sharp, rhythmic cracks of a high caliber rifle.
?Three bullets tore through Anna's back, the impact throwing her forward against Aiden.
The amber light of the birthday celebration was instantly stained with a violent crimson.
?A desperate, raw cry erupted from the driveway, a sound so hollow and agonized that it seemed to vibrate through the very foundations of the estate. It was a sound no one had ever heard from the man known as the King.
?Only as he felt her weight go limp in his arms did Aiden realize the scream was coming from his own throat.
