Chapter 31

The screen on the old burner phone didn't show a name, just a bunch of numbers. Anna sat on the edge of her bed, ignoring the dull ache in her back as the phone connected to an old satellite network that modern technology didn't even use anymore.

?When the call finally went through, nobody said hello. There was only the sound of slow, quiet breathing on the other end.

"The debt is old," Anna said, her voice dropping into the icy, absolute tone of the Wraith. "But the ledger is still open."

A pause stretched across the line, heavy and calculating. Then, a deep, powerful voice replied, "I wondered if you were still breathing, little ghost. It has been seven long years."

"I need a case dismantled," Anna stated bluntly. "Aiden Thorne. The FBI took him tonight on a murder charge."

He hummed softly. "A mafia king is a heavy weight to lift, even for me. The Bureau has been hunting him for a decade. But a debt to the Wraith is absolute. Give me forty eight hours to scrub the ink. Do not move against the feds in the meantime."

The line went dead.

At the federal holding facility, the legal process was moving at an agonizingly slow pace.

The Thorne empire's top consigliere, a sharp faced man named Dominic, had been at the bureau since midnight.

Because it was a high profile federal arrest, the agents used every bureaucratic trick in the book to delay the arraignment, holding Aiden under investigative detention without bail for the maximum legal window.

Aiden, however, remained entirely unbothered.

He sat through three separate rounds of intense interrogation, calmly eating the terrible cafeteria food and giving the agents nothing but a bored stare.

When they tried to imply his empire would crumble while he was locked away, Aiden merely smiled.

He knew exactly who was running things on the outside, and he trusted her implicitly.

Back at the estate, Anna had to manage a dual reality, being a protective mother and running the largest syndicate in the city.

Mia and Leo knew something was wrong the moment they woke up and didn't see their father.

Mia clung to Anna's good side, her eyes wide with unexpressed fear, while Leo quietly drew pictures at the kitchen island.

Anna hid her physical pain, pulling them into her lap and speaking to them in a soft, reassuring warmth.

"Daddy is just taking care of a boring business meeting," Anna murmured, kissing the tops of their heads. "Mommy is here. Nothing is going to happen to you, I promise."

Once the kids were settled in the secure wing with their nanny, Anna shifted entirely into commander mode. Sitting at the head of Aiden's massive mahogany desk, she handled the Thorne logistics, signing off on truck routing, supply chains, and security shifting.

Marcus was practically acting like her personal nurse, always on her case about eating right, taking her medicine, and resting. It was annoying in a good way, but she deeply appreciated the care.

?Right as she was reviewing the latest supply manifests, Marcus walked into the office carrying a tray. He set it down right over the paperwork she was reading.

?"Eat," Marcus ordered, sliding a bowl of soup and two pills toward her. "And then you're taking a two hour nap."

?Anna glared up at him, not moving an inch. "I'm in the middle of rerouting the highway security, Marcus. I don't have time to nap."

?"You have three gunshot wounds that say otherwise," Marcus replied, crossing his arms and refusing to budge.

"If Aiden comes back and finds out you tore your stitches because you were playing CEO instead of healing, he'll kill me first, then lock you in bed. Take the pills, Anna."

?Anna let out a sharp sigh, grumbling under her breath as she snatched the medication. "You are incredibly annoying."

?"I'm keeping you alive," Marcus smirked, handing her a spoon. "Now eat, Boss. The trucks can wait twenty minutes."

Enzo stayed at the estate the entire time, refusing to leave her side. He went completely out of his way to assist her, even bringing in a perimeter of his own elite Rossi guards to stand watch alongside Marcus's men.

"We don't need your muscle, Rossi," Marcus muttered irritably, tracking the new guards on the security monitors.

"She's my cousin, the one I just found, and the rightful heir to the Rossi syndicate, she is recovering from three bullet wounds, and her husband is in federal custody" Enzo replied smoothly, his jaw tight.

"Until Thorne walks back through those doors, my men are a wall between her and the rest of the world."

The second morning, the federal case against Aiden Thorne completely evaporated.

The primary security footage from the crime scene, the only piece of evidence tying Aiden to Marco's death, was suddenly ruled inadmissible due to a corrupted digital signature that wiped the file from the bureau's secure servers.

Simultaneously, the anonymous tipster who had pointed the feds toward the estate vanished entirely from federal protection. With zero evidence and an aggressive legal team threatening a massive civil suit for unlawful detention, the federal judge had no choice but to sign the release forms.

By noon, a sleek black SUV pulled up to the Thorne estate. The doors opened, and Aiden stepped out, looking slightly tired but completely immaculate.

The front doors flew open, and Mia and Leo sprinted down the steps, screaming in pure joy. Aiden dropped to his knees, catching both of them in his arms and hugging them tightly against his chest as he buried his face in their hair.

?"Daddy! You're back!" Leo cried, wrapping his small arms tightly around his neck.

?"We missed you so much," Mia whispered, burying her face into his shoulder.

?Aiden closed his eyes, holding them like they were the only things that mattered in the world. "I missed you guys too," he murmured, kissing the tops of their heads.

Marcus stepped up first, clapping a hand on Aiden's shoulder. "Good to have you back, boss. The house is intact."

Aiden stood up, his eyes immediately locking onto Anna.

He walked up the steps, entirely ignoring the physical pain of his own exhaustion, and pulled her into a deep, desperate kiss.

His hands held her waist gently, mindful of her back, while Anna melted into him, the suffocating weight of the last few days finally lifting from her shoulders.

"You handled everything," Aiden murmured against her lips.

"Always," Anna smirked.

They didn't need many words, they just stared into each other's eyes, an electric current of love, relief, and dark understanding passing between them.

?Then, breaking the heavy tension, Anna playfully elbowed him right in the ribs. "Next time, don't be so careless."

?Aiden barked out a genuine laugh, the sound rich and warm, before pulling her back in tight against his chest.

Later that evening, the heavy silence of their bedroom was broken when Aiden's secure burner phone vibrated on the desk. It was Elena.

?Aiden picked up, expecting her usual sharp, analytical briefing. Instead, the line was met with a stunned, uncharacteristic silence.

?"Aiden," Elena said finally, her voice genuinely intrigued and slightly unsettled.

"How the hell are you sitting in your living room right now?"

?Aiden frowned, leaning back against the edge of his heavy desk. "The evidence was weak, Elena. The file corrupted."

?"Don't give me that corporate garbage," Elena scoffed sharply.

"I have connections to the highest legal channels in Washington, and someone completely, flawlessly wiped that file from a secure federal mainframe. It wasn't a technical glitch, Aiden. It was a political execution. Whoever pulled those strings is so high profile, so utterly untouchable,

that even the Bureau directors are sweating through their suits today."

?Aiden's eyes narrowed, a sharp spark of curiosity instantly flaring. He glanced through the glass doors toward the bed, where Anna was resting against the pillows.

"You're telling me you don't know who did it?"

?"No, and that absolutely terrifies me," Elena admitted with a sharp, nervous chuckle. "I pride myself on being the connection to all connections, but whoever assisted your woman operates in the stratosphere. Seriously, Aiden... remind me to never, ever cross your wife. She's terrifying."

The line clicked shut. Aiden slowly lowered the phone.

My wife. He loved the sound of that. Without even realizing it, they had grown accustomed to addressing each other as husband and wife.

?He walked back into the bedroom, finding Anna looking completely relaxed, a faint, amused smile playing on her lips. Aiden stood at the foot of the bed, crossing his arms over his chest as a knowing smirk mirrored hers.

?"Elena just called," Aiden said softly, his dark, intense eyes fixed entirely on her. "She's losing her mind trying to figure out who cleared my name. She says whoever did it is an untouchable phantom."

?Anna raised an elegant eyebrow, looking entirely innocent. "Is that so?"

?"Yeah." Aiden walked over, sitting down on the edge of the mattress and gently taking her hand in his, his thumb tracing soothing circles over her skin.

?"So, care to tell me who exactly owed the Wraith a favor big enough to make the FBI drop a murder charge against a mafia king?"

Anna smiled slowly, a dangerous, beautiful spark in her eyes as she leaned forward to whisper the name.

?"Alexander Sterling," she murmured, her breath warm against his skin. "The Director of National Intelligence."

?Aiden's eyebrows shot up, a rare look of genuine surprise washing over his face.

?In the grand hierarchy of government power, the DNI oversees the entire national security apparatus, commanding all 18 intelligence agencies.

A DNI doesn't just prosecute crimes, they control the information flow of the entire country, possess the ultimate security clearance, and answer directly to the President.

They can rewrite data, classified files, and federal realities with a single, quiet directive.

"Years ago, long before his rise to ultimate political power, he was caught in the crosshairs of a brutal political war," Anna explained.

"He held some serious, highly significant evidence against a very high ranking state official. His rival contracted Valenti to eliminate him and his entire family. Lorenzo passed the mission down to me. It was a high profile hit. Wipe the bloodline clean. That was the order."

?She leaned back against the pillows, a cold, calculating look slipping over her features.

"But when I got to the safehouse and saw his wife and their two young children, my instincts kicked in. It was the first time I ever hesitated on a hit. I chose to break protocol. I staged the scene, duplicated flawless forensic proof of their deaths to satisfy the client,

and smuggled Sterling and his family out of the country under completely new identities."

?Aiden listened, fascinated by the lethal mercy of the woman before him.

?"After they were safe, I went back and hunted down the political head who had ordered the hit in the first place, just to ensure they would never be followed," Anna continued, a dangerous smirk playing on her lips.

"Sterling returned from the dead later with a clean slate, a terrifying drive, and a blood debt to the Wraith. He promised me a blank check, a life debt that never expires."

She reached up, patting Aiden's cheek softly with a playful wink. "And today, I cashed it in to buy my husband's freedom."
