The Line She Wasnt Allowed to Cross
The college campus buzzed with its usual chaos students rushing.
Meera walked in, adjusting the strap of her worn-out bag.
"Meera!" a voice called.
She turned.
Ruchika was waving at her from the corridor, her dupatta slipping off one shoulder as usual. Beside her stood Veer, hands stuffed into his pockets, looking half asleep.
"You're late," Ruchika said . "We were about to mark you absent in our friendship register."
Meera smiled faintly. "I had some work at home."
Veer tilted his head. "Home work or heart work?"
Ruchika smacked his arm. "Shut up."
They walked into the classroom together and took their usual seats third bench, corner side.
Three scholarship students.Three broken families.Three dreams stitched together by effort and hope.
Veer leaned back, whispering, "I swear, if I fail this semester, my mother will personally disown me."
"You won't fail," Ruchika said confidently.
"You're too stubborn for that." she said again.
Meera opened her notebook quietly.
Ruchika leaned closer, lowering her voice. "So... did he reply?"
Meera didn't look up. "No."
Veer sighed loudly. "That guy has the emotional availability of a switched off phone."
Ruchika shot him a warning look, then turned back to Meera. "I'm sorry."
"It's okay. I'm used to it."Meera said softly.
Ruchika frowned. "You shouldn't be."
Veer tapped the desk. "Emergency meeting after class. No sad faces allowed."
The bell rang before Meera could respond. The professor walked in, glasses perched on the edge of his nose.
"Good morning," their sir said.
"Good morning, sir," the class replied in unison.
As the lecture began, Meera focused hard writing every word, underlining points. Veer scribbled furiously, while Ruchika whispered explanations to him when he missed something.
Veer muttered, "If I pass, it's because of you two."
"You'll pass because your hardworking," Ruchika replied.
"Scholarship power."Meera said while smiled slightly.
······
As soon as the professor left, Ruchika clapped her hands.
"Decision made," she announced.
Veer raised an eyebrow. "About what?"
"I'm treating you both to tea."
Meera blinked. "Ruchika, you don't have to."
"I do. Because heartbreak needs caffeine."she insisted.
Veer grinned. "I support this decision."
They walked toward the canteen, laughter slowly replacing the heaviness.
College Canteen :??????
_________________________
The canteen was crowded, noisy, alive. They grabbed a corner table.
Veer slumped into his chair dramatically and suddenly said,"I haven't bathed for two days."
Ruchika froze. "What?"
Meera covered her nose. "Veer!"
"What? Water bill issues."he defended himself.
Ruchika gagged. "You're disgusting."
Veer smirked. "You sat next to me all day."
"i will kill you,Veer!"Ruchika said
Meera laughed really laughed.
Veer pointed at Ruchika. "At least I didn't push someone into a swimming pool when i was child."
Ruchika's eyes widened. "You promised you'd never tell!"
Meera leaned forward. "Tell what?"
Veer grinned wickedly. "Madam here once threw me into a pool because I ate her chocolate."
Ruchika crossed her arms. "You deserved it."
"You almost drowned me!"
"You could swim!"
Meera laughed harder. "I wish I'd seen that."
Veer shook his head. "She's violent. Don't trust her."
Ruchika turned to Meera. "He cried for an hour."
"That's a lie!" Veer protested.
"You called your mother!"
Meera wiped her eyes. "You two are impossible."
Their tea arrived.
Veer raised his cup. "To surviving poverty."
Ruchika raised hers. "To scholarships."
Meera hesitated, then lifted her cup too. "To... not giving up."
They clinked cups.
Veer leaned back. "One day, we'll all have jobs. Money. Stability."
Ruchika nodded. "And we'll sit in a fancy café and laugh about this."
Meera smiled softly. "I hope so."
Veer looked at Meera seriously for a moment and said ,"And one day, someone will choose you without hesitation."
Ruchika reached for Meera's hand. "Until then, you have us."
Meera sat unmoving. Her chest felt heavy. Ruchika watched her from across the table.
"You're somewhere else," shr said gently.
"Where did you go?" Meera blinked.
Veer pushed his chair back. It screeched softly against the floor. He slinging his bag over his shoulder.
"I should go. If I'm late again, my father will start calculating my future failures." he said.
Ruchika rolled her eyes."Go before we throw you out."
"Don't stay too late .You vanish when you overthink."he said.
Meera nodded."I'll be fine."
He turned to go.That's when the sound cut through the room.
Laughter.
Ruchika stiffened instantly. Her voice dropped to a whisper
"...They're here."
Meera's stomach clenched before she even turned.
Five figures entered. They didn't announce themselves. They didn't need to.
Tiya walked first, confidence dripping from every step.
Anika clung to her arm, laughing loudly, deliberately.
Virat and Viki followed, scanning faces, enjoying the discomfort they caused.
And Omkar
Detached.Unbothered.
As if nothing in this place deserved his attention.
The canteen shrank.
Veer muttered under his breath,
"Just walk. Don't look."
He stepped forward.
His foot caught on the uneven tile. His shoulder slammed into Virat.
The impact echoed.Too loud. Too final.
Virat stumbled.
"Are you blind?!" he snapped.
Veer froze, color draining from his face."I.. I didn't see you. I'm sorry."
Virat shoved him hard."Sorry doesn't fix stupidity."
Veer lost balance. His bag slipped, spilling notebooks onto the floor.
"I said I'm sorry," Veer repeated, voice barely above a whisper.
Viki laughed."Pathetic."
Tiya wrinkled her nose."Why do they even let people like this sit here?"
Anika smirked."Because pity is fashionable."
Meera stood. Her legs felt weak, but her spine stayed straight.
"It wasn't intentional . He slipped."Meera said.
Virat didn't acknowledge her.He stared at his shoe.
A faint mark.His expression changed.
"You stained it."
Veer immediately crouched."I'll clean it. I swear."
Viki stepped closer, blocking him."With what dignity?"
Veer looked up, confused.
"I'll find napkins...."
"Use your fingers," Viki said casually.
The words sank in slowly.
Ruchika gasped."You can't be serious."
Veer's hands trembled."Please... don't humiliate me."
Tiya shrugged."Then don't touch what you can't afford."
Ruchika rushed forward, palms pressed together."Omkar sir, please. We're begging you. It was a mistake."
Omkar didn't even look at her. Veer lowered himself again, shame flooding his face.
"No."Meera stepped in and grabbed his wrist.
"No. Stop." she said.
Veer whispered urgently,"Meera, don't. Please."
She ignored him.
Her voice cracked as she spoke.
"We don't have power. We don't have money. But we're human."
She swallowed hard."That shoe costs more than our tuition."
Her eyes burned."Is this really worth it?"
Omkar finally looked at her.
Slow.Cold.
Tiya laughed."She's giving a speech."
Anika clapped mockingly."So dramatic."
Omkar reached out .And yanked Meera's hair.
Pain exploded across her scalp.
She cried out, stumbling forward.
"Meera!" Veer shouted, trying to rush to her.
Virat and Viki restrained him instantly.
"Move and you'll regret it with your friends," Virat hissed.
Ruchika screamed, fighting against Tiya and Anika who was grabbing her
"Let her go! She didn't do anything!"
Omkar forced Meera's face up.
"What's your name?" he asked calmly.
Her lips shook."Meera."
"Meera," he repeated, tasting it.
"Did no one teach you your place?" Omkar said.
Tears blurred her vision."My place isn't beneath you."
Omkar's jaw tightened.
"You're brave. Let's see how long that lasts."he said softly.
"Did your mother teach you to interfere?" he said.
Meera's eyes burned."Don't insult my mother."
That was it.Omkar's face hardened.
"Oh? Then let me insult your friends."
He turned."This boy was disgusting poor ...."
"That's enough!" Meera screamed.
Her hand moved before her mind could stop it.
Slap.
The sound cut through the room.
Silence.Absolute silence.
Meera froze.Her hand shook violently.
"I..I'm sorry.I didn't mean to..please.."she whispered instantly.
Omkar smiled.
"My mother never raised her hand at me," he said quietly.
"But you did."
His slap came fast.
The impact sent her crashing into the table. Trays fell. Food scattered.
Meera gasped, pain radiating through her body.
She tried to stand.
Omkar grabbed her again and threw her on the floor .She hit the floor hard.
"Remember today .You crossed a line."he said, voice ice cold.
He leaned closer.
"And people like you pay for that and remember this," Omkar said coldly.
"You and your friends are nothing." He leaned closer.
"You'll regret today." he said they walked away while laughing.
Meera lay on the floor, her body aching, her clothes soaked with curry and tea. The smell made her stomach twist, but she didn't move.
Her eyes were open. She wasn't crying.
Not yet.
Ruchika was the first to break the silence. She ran to Meera, dropping to her knees.
"Meera... Meera, look at me."Her hands trembled as she touched Meera's shoulder.
"You're hurt... say something." Ruchika said.
Veer stood frozen for a second longer.
His chest felt tight.
Then he ran.
He knelt beside Meera, his voice cracking."I'm here. I'm here. Please get up."
Meera tried. Her palms slipped on the floor.
That's when the tears finally came not loud, not dramatic just silent drops sliding into her hair.
"I didn't mean to," Meera whispered.
"I really didn't mean to." she said.
Ruchika hugged her tightly."We know. We know."
Veer clenched his fists. His nails dug into his skin."They humiliated you because of me."
Meera shook her head weakly."No... they would've done it anyway. People like them always look for someone small."
Ruchika helped her stand."Come. Let's go."
As they walked out, whispers followed them.
"Did you see?"
"She slapped Omkar."
"She's finished."
Each word stabbed.
Meera squinted, her head throbbing.
Veer walked beside her, silent, guilt heavy on his shoulders."I swear... if I had any power-"
Meera stopped walking. She looked at him.
"Don't . Don't turn this into your fault."she said softly
Her voice shook."We already have enough to carry."
Ruchika wiped her own tears angrily.
"They think money gives them permission to destroy people."
Meera laughed bitterly."It does. In this world."
They walked in silence for a while.
Then Meera whispered,"I was scared."
Ruchika squeezed her hand."So were we."
Meera's Room :??????
________________________
The room smelled of detergent and old books.
Meera sat on the bed, staring at her ruined clothes lying on the chair.
She hadn't changed yet.
It felt wrong to wash away the proof.
Ruchika brought water.
"Drink."Meera took a sip, her hands still shaking.
Veer sat on the floor, back against the wall, eyes red."What if they complain first?" he asked quietly.
"They always twist stories."Meera closed her eyes.
"They won't complain." Meera said.
Ruchika frowned."How do you know?
"Because for them," Meera said slowly,"this wasn't a mistake. This was entertainment."
Silence filled the room.
Veer suddenly spoke, voice heavy.
"When he grabbed your hair... I couldn't move."
He covered his face."I felt useless."
Meera reached out and held his wrist.
"You try. That matters."
Meera leaned back against the wall.
Her body ached. But her mind hurt more.
"What if they target us every day?" she whispered.
"What if they don't let us sit in class? What if they ruin our exams?"
Ruchika swallowed."Then we'll face it."
Veer looked up."How?"
Ruchika smiled weakly."Like we always do. One day at a time."
Meera stared at the ceiling.
Aarav's face crossed her mind uninvited.
She clenched her jaw.He promised he'd never leave me alone but now?
She turned it face down.
"No," she murmured to herself.
"I won't wait for anyone anymore."
Ruchika noticed."What?"
Meera sat up straighter.
"I'll work. I'll study. I'll survive." she said.
Veer nodded slowly."They don't know who they messed with."
Ruchika smiled through tears."They think fear ends people."
Meera looked at her bruised arm.
"No. Fear wakes them up."she said.
