Chapter 12 The Confession #2
Evan stepped away, needing enough distance to think.
"This isn't just about tonight."
"I know."
"It isn't just about what happened at the hospital."
"I know."
"And it isn't just about the baby."
Nathaniel's expression became serious.
"I know."
Evan folded his arms.
"Then tell me what you think choosing me actually means."
Nathaniel didn't answer immediately.
Evan waited.
He needed more than a beautiful confession.
He needed more than emotion created by fear, pregnancy, family conflict, and the possibility of losing each other.
He needed Nathaniel to understand the cost.
Because loving Evan wasn't going to be simple.
Richard was still Nathaniel's oldest friend.
Their eighteen-year age difference wasn't going to disappear because they had kissed or because Nathaniel had said three words.
Nathaniel had a reputation, a company, a life built over decades. Evan had his own life too, but he knew the world would look at them and make assumptions.
Some people would call him a gold digger.
Others would say Nathaniel had taken advantage of a younger man.
Some would see only the pregnancy.
Others would turn their relationship into gossip.
And Richard would have to live with the fact that his best friend had fallen in love with his son.
Evan couldn't pretend none of that mattered.
"I don't want you saying you love me tonight because you're afraid," Evan said quietly.
Nathaniel looked directly at him.
"I'm not."
"I've been scared too."
"I know."
"You were terrified at the hospital."
Nathaniel's jaw tightened.
"Yes."
"And maybe this is what happens when you almost lose someone. Everything becomes clearer."
Nathaniel nodded.
"It did become clearer."
Evan swallowed.
"But I need to know that tomorrow morning you'll still mean it."
"I will."
"And next month."
"Yes."
"And when my father refuses to speak to you."
Nathaniel didn't hesitate.
"Yes."
"When people start talking."
"Yes."
"When someone says you're too old for me."
Nathaniel's expression shifted, but his voice remained calm.
"I already know I'm older than you."
"When someone says I'm with you because you're wealthy."
"I'll know they're wrong."
"When someone says the pregnancy trapped you."
Nathaniel stepped closer.
"I'll know they're wrong too."
Evan looked at him.
Nathaniel continued.
"And when someone says you don't know what you want because you're twenty-three, I'll disagree with them too."
Something tightened inside Evan's chest.
"Why?"
"Because I've watched you make your own decisions."
Nathaniel's voice was steady.
"You've challenged me when you thought I was wrong. You've kept your own money, your own work, your own apartment. You moved into my house because you chose to, and you made sure I understood that living here didn't give me control over your life."
Evan's mouth curved slightly.
"You remember all that?"
"I remember everything that matters."
The answer struck deeper than Evan expected.
Nathaniel reached for his hand but stopped before touching him.
Evan closed the distance himself.
Nathaniel took his hand.
"I don't want to own you," Nathaniel said.
"I know."
"I don't want to decide your future."
"I know."
"I don't want the baby to become an excuse for you to stay with me."
Evan looked down.
"And I don't want the baby to become an excuse for you to stay with me."
Nathaniel squeezed his hand.
"Then we understand each other."
Evan looked up.
"Do we?"
Nathaniel nodded.
"I think we do."
Evan took a slow breath.
"Then tell me what choosing me will cost you."
Nathaniel's expression became thoughtful.
"It may cost me my friendship with your father."
Evan's eyes dropped.
"It may cost me the approval of people I have known for years."
He paused.
"It may change how people see me."
Another pause.
"It may complicate my business life."
Evan listened.
Nathaniel continued.
"But none of those things are a reason for me to pretend I don't love you."
Evan's throat tightened.
Nathaniel moved closer.
"The biggest cost would be losing you because I was too afraid to choose you."
Evan looked at him.
"And you're willing to accept that?"
"I'm willing to accept the consequences of an honest choice."
Evan stared at him for several seconds.
"What if my father never accepts us?"
Nathaniel's eyes softened.
"I'll respect his feelings."
"You won't give up?"
"No."
Evan's breath caught.
"You'd let him be angry?"
"Yes."
"You'd let him hate you?"
Nathaniel looked away briefly.
"If that's what he chooses."
Evan understood then.
Nathaniel wasn't promising an easy future.
He wasn't promising that everyone would suddenly approve.
He wasn't pretending love could erase the complicated parts.
He was promising something more difficult.
He was promising to stay honest when things became uncomfortable.
That was what Evan had needed to hear.
Not that nothing would go wrong.
But that Nathaniel wouldn't run when it did.
Evan's eyes burned.
"I've been afraid of this."
Nathaniel looked at him.
"Of what?"
"Of believing you."
Nathaniel's expression softened.
"Why?"
"Because if I believe you, then I have something to lose."
Nathaniel reached up and touched his cheek.
"You already have something to lose."
Evan closed his eyes.
"I know."
"And so do I."
The words settled between them.
Evan opened his eyes again.
He looked at the man standing in front of him and allowed himself to stop fighting the truth he had been carrying for months.
There had been a time when he had tried to explain his attraction to Nathaniel as curiosity.
Then chemistry.
Then forbidden desire.
Then something dangerous.
He had told himself it was temporary.
Something that would burn out if they gave it enough distance.
But it hadn't.
It had grown.
It had grown in the spaces between arguments.
In quiet mornings.
In the way Nathaniel remembered how Evan liked his coffee.
In the way he listened when Evan spoke.
In the way he had held his hand during the first ultrasound.
In the way he had looked terrified at the hospital.
In the way he had never treated Evan's pregnancy as a reason to take control of his life.
Evan realized he had been falling in love long before he had understood what was happening.
"I loved you before the pregnancy."
Nathaniel went still.
Evan's heart hammered.
"I think I started falling for you the night we kissed."
Nathaniel's eyes softened.
"I tried to forget it."
"So did I."
"I couldn't."
"Neither could I."
Evan smiled through the tears gathering in his eyes.
"Then I found out I was pregnant, and everything became complicated."
"Yes."
"And I was scared."
"I know."
"But I wasn't confused about you."
Nathaniel's expression changed.
"You weren't?"
Evan shook his head.
"No."
He stepped closer.
"I was scared of what loving you would mean. I was scared of my father. I was scared of the age difference. I was scared that people would think I was with you because of the baby."
His fingers tightened around Nathaniel's.
"But I wasn't scared of wanting you."
Nathaniel's breath caught.
"I wanted you before I knew our lives were going to change."
Evan looked directly into his eyes.
"And I still want you now."
Nathaniel lifted his hand to Evan's face.
"Are you sure?"
Evan smiled.
"For once, completely."
Nathaniel leaned closer.
He stopped just before their lips touched.
Evan knew what he was asking without words.
Evan answered by closing the final distance.
Their kiss was gentle at first.
There was no urgency.
No desperation.
No fear.
It was simply an acknowledgment.
They were choosing each other.
Nathaniel's hand settled carefully at Evan's waist while Evan's fingers curled into the front of his shirt.
The kiss deepened, still tender, still deliberate.
Evan felt the tension that had lived between them for so long finally loosen.
There was no pretending now.
No calling their relationship an accident.
No blaming the pregnancy for every emotion.
No hiding behind responsibility.
This was desire.
This was love.
This was choice.
When they finally separated, Evan rested his forehead against Nathaniel's.
"We're really doing this."
Nathaniel smiled.
"Yes."
"Even though it's complicated."
"Especially because it's complicated."
Evan laughed softly.
"That's a terrible answer."
"It's an honest one."
Evan looked at him.
"Then here's mine."
Nathaniel waited.
"I choose you."
Nathaniel's eyes softened.
"Even with everything?"
"With everything."
Nathaniel kissed his forehead.
Evan closed his eyes.
For the first time, he didn't feel like someone standing inside a secret.
He felt like a man standing inside a relationship.
His relationship.
Their relationship.
The baby was part of their future, a beautiful and terrifying part of it.
But the baby wasn't the reason they loved each other.
They had found each other first.
They had wanted each other first.
And now, after all the fear and hesitation, they were finally willing to say it without excuses.
Evan opened his eyes.
"I love you, Nathaniel."
Nathaniel smiled.
"I love you too."
Evan took his hand and placed it gently over the curve of his stomach.
Their baby moved beneath his palm.
Nathaniel's eyes dropped to the movement, and a quiet smile appeared.
Evan smiled too.
This time, neither of them mistook the meaning.
The baby was their future.
But their love belonged to them.
And whatever came next, they would face it together.
