Chapter 12 The Wedding Day
Tessa Johnson woke before dawn.
For a moment, she didn't move.
She simply lay in bed staring at the ceiling as her heart raced with excitement.
Today is the day.
The words echoed through her mind.
Today is the day.
After months of planning.
Months of dreaming.
Months of loving.
The day had finally arrived.
She was getting married.
A slow smile spread across her face.
Then came the knock at her bedroom door.
Three loud knocks.
Followed by a familiar voice.
"Tessa!"
It was her mother.
"Are you awake?"
"Yes, Mama."
Another knock.
"Good."
A pause.
Then:
"Because I can't sleep."
Tessa burst out laughing.
The door opened.
Regina Johnson entered wearing silk pajamas and a smile so bright it could light an entire city.
Immediately behind her came Tessa's cousins.
Then her aunt.
Then her bridesmaids.
Then complete and total chaos.
The room exploded with laughter.
Hugs.
Coffee.
Makeup kits.
Hair supplies.
Wedding excitement.
And somehow, in the middle of all the noise, Tessa found herself sitting quietly in front of a mirror.
Watching everything unfold.
The people she loved celebrating for her.
It showed the beginning of a brand-new chapter in her life.
A chapter she never thought she'd have.
Especially not after Anthony, heartbreak.
Not after all those lonely nights in her apartment.
A soft hand landed on her shoulder.
Her mother Regina's eyes met hers in the mirror.
"You okay, baby?"
Tessa swallowed.
Then nodded.
"I'm happy."
Regina smiled.
The kind of smile only mothers possessed that saw straight through you.
"I know you are, baby."
Her voice softened.
"He sees you for who you are, amazing darling."
Tears immediately filled Tessa's eyes.
Because her mother understood exactly what she was feeling.
After years of wondering, questioning herself and feeling overlooked.
Jamison comes into her life.
The man who somehow saw every beautiful thing she'd forgotten existed.
Regina squeezed her shoulder.
"He always will."
Across town, Jamison Edwards was having a very different morning.
Pure panic.
"Where's my tie?"
His best man laughed.
"On the chair."
Jamison turned.
The tie was exactly where his friend said it was.
"Oh."
Another friend shook his head.
"I've never seen you like this."
Jamison ignored him.
Mostly because it was true.
He was extremely nervous.
Not because he doubted anything.
It was actually quite the opposite.
He had never been more certain about anything in his entire life.
That was the problem.
This really mattered to him.
More than business, money or success.
More than everything in the world.
A knock sounded at the suite door.
His mother entered.
Immediately silence filled the room.
Because every man present recognized the look on her face.
Emotion.
Pride.
Love.
Regina walked directly over to her son.
For a moment neither spoke.
Then she reached up and adjusted his tie.
"You look very handsome, son."
Jamison smiled.
"Thank you mom."
Her eyes glistened.
"Tessa is a very lucky woman."
His smile softened.
"No."
His voice became quiet.
Honestly mom.
"I'm the lucky one."
His mother blinked rapidly.
Trying not to cry.
But completely failing at it.
By early afternoon, guests began arriving.
The venue sat just outside Atlanta.
Elegant.
Beautiful.
Surrounded by gardens.
White flowers lined the pathways.
Soft music floated through the air.
Everything looked perfect.
But none of that mattered to Jamison.
Because he only cared about one thing.
Seeing Tessa.
He stood near the altar.
Hands clasped together tightly.
His heart was pounding.
The guests filled their seats.
Their family, friends, his staff and the nurses from the fourth floor.
Lizzie, who was sitting near the front, was already sniffing away tears.
Even though the ceremony hadn't started.
"Pull yourself together," Denise whispered.
Then the music changed.
Every guest immediately stood.
And then...
Tessa appeared.
Jamison completely went breathless.
The world around them vanished.
Every guest disappeared.
Even the music and decorations disappeared.
Everything seemed to disappear except her.
She looked breathtaking.
Her white Vera Wang gown hugged her curves beautifully as it flowed elegantly toward the floor.
Tiny crystals shimmered softly beneath the sunlight.
Her curls framed her face perfectly.
She smiled as she said a silent prayer to herself:
“Thank you lord for everything you have done for me and please God bless our marriage.”
Jamison felt tears fill his eyes immediately as she got closer.
Tessa was so beautiful.
It was not just the dress or the makeup.
Not even because of the moment.
It was simply because it was her, walking toward him.
Choosing him.
Forever.
Halfway down the aisle, Tessa noticed something.
Jamison was crying.
Actually crying in front of everyone.
She laughed softly through her own tears.
The sight made him smile.
Which somehow made her cry harder.
"This is a mess," she whispered.
Her father chuckled beside her.
"The best kind."
When they finally reached the altar, Jamison took her hands immediately.
Like he couldn't help himself.
Like he needed to touch her.
Needing to know she was really there standing with him.
Then Tessa squeezed his fingers.
And just like that...
The nerves disappeared in both of them.
They were each other’s home.
The ceremony itself felt magical.
Simple.
Meaningful.
Perfect.
The officiant spoke about love.
Friendship.
Faith and Commitment.
The foundation of long lasting marriages.
Then came their vows.
Jamison went first.
His hands trembled slightly.
But his voice remained steady.
"Tessa."
The emotion in his eyes instantly brought tears to hers.
"A year ago, I was lying in a hospital bed believing I was completely alone."
The guests listened quietly.
"I had money."
A small smile.
"I had success."
Another pause.
"But I didn't have you."
Tears slipped down Tessa's cheeks.
"And then one night a nurse walked into my room carrying a sandwich and a book."
Laughter rippled through the audience.
Even Tessa laughed.
Jamison smiled.
"You changed my life."
His voice thickened.
"You taught me that strength can be gentle."
Another tear.
"You taught me that vulnerability isn't weakness."
Another.
"You taught me how to trust again."
His eyes never left hers.
"You taught me how to love."
Tessa cried openly now.
No point pretending otherwise.
"I promise to choose us every day."
His voice lowered.
"Every morning."
A tear escaped.
"Every evening."
Another.
"Every chapter."
The room fell silent.
"Forever."
By the time he finished, half the guests were crying.
Including the pastor.
Including his mother and Lizzie.
Who had completely given up fighting it.
Tessa somehow managed to deliver her vows through tears.
Mostly.
"Jamison."
She laughed shakily.
"I had a beautiful speech planned."
Laughter.
"But then you started crying."
More laughter.
Jamison grinned.
Tessa took a breath.
Then spoke from her heart.
"When I met you..."
A smile appeared.
"You weren't exactly conversational."
The guests laughed.
Jamison shook his head.
Tessa squeezed his hands.
"But even then, I saw something special."
Her eyes filled again.
"A man who needed someone."
His throat tightened.
"And somehow..."
Her voice cracked.
"I needed someone too."
The tears came harder.
"You helped me believe in myself again."
Silence settled across the venue.
"You loved me when I struggled to love myself."
Jamison's eyes glistened.
"You showed me what real partnership looks like."
A smile.
"You showed me what real friendship looks like."
Another smile.
"And every day since room 415, you've shown me what real love looks like."
The emotion nearly overwhelmed her.
But she pushed through.
"I promise to stand beside you everyday for the rest of our lives."
A tear.
"I promise to pray for you."
Another.
"I promise to support your dreams."
Another.
"I promise to keep reading books to you."
Laughter broke through the tears.
Jamison laughed too.
Even while crying.
And somehow that made the moment even more perfect.
"I promise to love you."
Her voice softened.
"Forever."
By the time the pastor reached the end of the ceremony, there wasn't a dry eye in sight.
Not one.
All smiles and some tears lingered.
But most of all joy.
Filled every corner of the venue.
Finally the pastor grinned.
"By the power vested in me..."
Jamison's heart pounded.
Tessa smiled.
"...I now pronounce you husband and wife."
Cheers erupted immediately.
The pastor laughed.
"You may kiss your bride."
Jamison didn't need to be told twice.
He pulled Tessa into his arms.
Then kissed her.
The crowd exploded in applause.
Whistles, cheers and happy tears.
Everything.
But neither of them heard much of it.
Because at that very moment, it was just them.
The nurse and her patient.
The woman with the books.
The man in room 415.
The beginning.
The journey.
The love.
All leading here, leading them together.
When they finally pulled apart, Jamison rested his forehead against hers.
My wife.
The word felt incredible on his lips.
Absolutely incredible.
"I love you, Mrs. Edwards."
Tessa smiled.
The happiest smile he'd ever seen.
"I love you too, Mr. Edwards."
Then hand in hand, husband and wife, they turned toward their future together.
And everyone rose to celebrate the love story that had started with a dream, a prayer, a book, and a lonely man in a hospital bed.
