Epilogue
BETH
Six Months Later
Isat at my desk, listening to the happy chatter outside as community members moved through the co-op building. It had only been a few months, but the space had quickly become the heart of this community, offering more than just food but hope, connection, and a sense of belonging.
Chris and I had done a lot to rebuild. The pain from what we went through was still there, just below the surface sometimes, but we had found something real together in this place, something worth holding onto.
I glanced down at the cradle by my chair, smiling at our four-month-old son sleeping peacefully.
Thomas was everything I could have asked for, with a soft shock of dark hair that seemed to mirror Chris’s when he was a child, according to all the old family photos.
I gently touched his cheek, feeling the warmth of him, my heart swelling with a love I hadn’t known was possible until he arrived.
He had been the piece that completed our family, a little soul born out of our struggle but made entirely from love.
And every time I looked at him, it felt like the world shifted a little more into place.
I heard Chris’s familiar footsteps before he came around the corner, his boots scuffing the wooden floor as he walked in.
He had just finished a shift working the loading bay, but he had done that more willingly than I ever expected.
He looked happy. Genuinely content in this life we had built here together, far from the corporate world he once ruled.
“Hey, love.” He walked over, leaning down to kiss me softly. “How’s the little guy?”
I nodded toward the cradle. “Sleeping. He had a big morning, being passed around between everyone at the co-op.”
Chris chuckled softly, reaching out to run a hand over the top of Thomas’s head. “He’s already a little celebrity. Everyone wants a turn with him.”
I smiled. “He does have that effect on people.”
There was a moment of quiet, just the three of us in the small office, and I felt that overwhelming sense of gratitude wash over me again.
This. This was what life was supposed to be.
It had taken us a while to find our footing, but now, I knew we were on solid ground.
The past felt distant, though it still had lessons that shaped who we were now.
We had both made mistakes, both carried regrets, but in the end, we had chosen to fight for each other.
For our family. I think Chris had chosen more than I had at the start of this journey.
And his efforts were still visible every day.
Chris moved behind my chair, his hands resting on my shoulders, and I leaned back into him, closing my eyes as his warmth surrounded me. “You okay?” he asked, his voice full of care.
“I’m more than okay,” I replied. “I just... Sometimes I still can’t believe we’re here.”
His grip tightened gently on my shoulders. “We deserve this, Beth. All of it. The quiet, the chaos, the family.” He paused for a moment, his voice softening. “I’d give up everything again, just to have you and Thomas. You’re my home, always.”
My eyes filled with tears, the kind I was so used to shedding now, the ones that came from a place of happiness instead of sorrow. “You already did give up everything, Chris. I never expected it, but I’m so grateful you did.”
He turned me around in the chair, his hands gently cupping my face. “And I’d do it a million times over, if it meant we got to be where we are right now. There’s no price on what we’ve built, Beth. You taught me that.”
We kissed again, slowly and deeply, like we had time to make up for everything we’d missed.
I held onto him, knowing I never wanted to let this go.
And in his arms, with our son resting between us, I felt more at peace than I ever had in my life.
Chris’s hands moved down to lift Thomas out of the cradle, cradling him against his chest as the baby stirred but didn’t wake.
“He’s got your stubborn streak,” I teased, smiling as I watched Chris rock him.
“And he’s going to have your kindness. He’ll be a force to be reckoned with, that’s for sure.”
I stood, walking to the window where the afternoon sun poured in, casting light over the field behind the co-op where some of the kids played. “I think he’ll have the best parts of both of us, Chris. And he’ll grow up knowing a different kind of love than either of us did as children.”
Chris stepped beside me, the three of us framed by the glow of the setting sun. “I’m going to make sure of it.”
We stood there for a while, just watching as the day came to a close, and I felt the truth of everything settle around us.
Our future wasn’t written yet, but we were ready to face it together, whatever it might bring.
After all the struggles, the heartbreak, we’d found something rare and real. Something that couldn’t be shaken.
Turning to face Chris, I placed my hand on his chest, feeling his heartbeat steady under my palm. “I love you,” I whispered. “More than I can ever say.”
He smiled, his eyes full of love, the kind that made me believe in forever all over again. “I love you too, Beth. More today than yesterday, and even more tomorrow.”
It was as simple as that, the foundation we stood on now, built brick by brick, not with grand gestures or apologies, but with moments like these.
The ones that passed quietly between us, full of meaning.
I laid my head against his shoulder as Thomas woke with a little whimper, his tiny hand reaching out to grasp my finger.
And I knew, deep in my heart, that everything had worked out exactly the way it was meant to.
It might not have looked like we planned, but it was ours, real and lasting.
Our little family had weathered the storm, and now we could bask in the beauty that followed.
Because at the end of it all, that was all we really needed.
Each other. And as long as we had that, we could face anything that came our way.
Together. Always. That was enough. It always had been, we just hadn’t realized it sooner.
Now that we did, I wasn’t ever going to let it go.
Our son began to cry softly, reminding us of our duties as parents, but I couldn’t stop the smile that tugged at my lips as Chris kissed my forehead.
Life was sweet, messy, and chaotic sometimes, but with the man I loved by my side and our baby boy in his arms, I couldn’t imagine a more perfect ending to the story that began with so much pain.
This was the happily ever after we’d earned, the one I’d fight for every single day.
And I knew, with all certainty, it would only get better from here.
