Chapter 9
Delaney
The groundbreaking had a white tent, and a caterer, and a woman from the client foundation with a clipboard and a headset steering everyone gently toward the row of chrome shovels stuck upright in a low berm of imported black dirt, and Delaney stood there in a brand-new hard hat that had never once seen a job site and let herself, for a few minutes, simply have it.
The morning had that hard bright cold that comes off the water in early spring, the sky scrubbed a thin high blue, the sun all glare and no heat.
The tent snapped and bellied in the wind off the harbor, its guy-lines thrumming, and everyone under it kept one hand near a lapel or a hem.
The berm of imported dirt was almost black, trucked in that morning, still faintly steaming in the cold.
It smelled of turned earth, peat, and truck diesel from the gate.
The chrome shovels stood in a row, their blades throwing back little wobbling suns.
Someone had zip-tied ribbons to the handles and the ribbons whipped sideways.
A folding table held a coffee urn, a pyramid of cups, and a plate of pastries already going cold and hard, nobody eating, everybody clutching.
Delaney's borrowed hard hat sat too big on her head and smelled of somebody else's sweat and sawdust. The chin strap swung loose.
She kept pushing the brim up out of her eyes.
Gulls hung motionless overhead on the wind, riding it, waiting on the pastries.
The harbor slapped at the pilings below in its old patient rhythm.
And she stood in the cold bright wind in a hat that wasn't hers, on the ground of the thing she'd made, and for a few minutes she let the morning belong entirely to her.
The cameras were mostly local, the city desk and a design blog she respected and the foundation's own photographer, but they were cameras, and they were pointed at her, at the architect, at the woman in the hard hat, and not at any Fairbanks.
Hollis had driven two hours in for it and stood right at the front in a coat too good for the weather, and when the foundation chair leaned into the little microphone and said Delaney's name and then the word visionary, Hollis put two fingers to her mouth and whistled, loud and sharp and utterly out of place, like they were at a ballgame instead of a groundbreaking, and Delaney laughed and had to look down hard at the black dirt so she wouldn't cry into a brand-new hard hat on camera.
She got a shovel. Julian got the shovel next to hers, and gave her a small sideways look under his own borrowed hard hat, and on the count of three the whole row of them turned the imported dirt, and the shutters went off in a soft rolling clatter, and for one clean bright second Delaney Fairbanks was exactly and only the woman who had made the thing, standing in the ground of the thing she'd made.
And then a black town car she knew far too well came up the gravel access road too fast, and parked where the cars were expressly not meant to park, and her husband got out of it in a suit that cost more than the tent.

He'd brought a check. She understood it before he'd even reached her across the dirt, understood the whole shape of it from the leather folder in his hand and the two lawyers trailing a respectful step behind him and the careful, hopeful, catastrophically wrong set of his shoulders.
This was the grand gesture. This was the man reaching, again, for the biggest and most expensive thing he could possibly find to lay down at her feet in public.
"Delaney." He was a little out of breath from the walk across the uneven ground.
The cameras had already turned toward him, scenting it, the way cameras do.
"I need thirty seconds. Just thirty, and then I'll go, I promise, I'll get out of your day.
I found out that Ridgeway walked. I found out that Sabine got to them, that she poisoned it.
So I bought them back." He opened the folder.
"I bought out the entire Ridgeway position, and then some.
The building is funded. Fully. Today, right now, no gap, no risk, no exposure, it's done, it's handled, you never have to think about the money on this project again for the rest of your life. I did this. For you. For the pavilion."
The tent had gone dead quiet around them. The foundation chair was watching with a fixed, careful expression. Julian had gone very still with his shovel still in his two hands. Somewhere off to the left a single shutter fired, once, into the silence, loud as a dropped plate.
And the terrible thing, the thing that would sit with her for a long time after, was that a year ago it would have worked.
A year ago she'd have taken the folder in both hands and been grateful and small and warm and his.
She stood there in her hard hat and looked down at the check, at all those zeros reaching out for her across a berm of trucked-in dirt, and what rose up in her was not gratitude at all.
What rose up in her was the specific, precise insult of a man who still believed, after everything, that the problem had ever once been the money.
"I already fixed it," she said.
He blinked. "What?"
"Ridgeway walked three weeks ago, Beckett.
Three weeks. And that same night, Julian and I landed Callaway.
The whole two-fifths and then some. The building has been fully funded for three weeks.
" Her voice was steady, and it carried across the quiet tent, and she let it carry, she did not soften it or bring it down.
"Callaway does community waterfront preservation.
They're a real partner. They came out to the site in the rain and walked the seawall with me.
You didn't save my project. You bought back a position that I already replaced, three weeks ago, with something better, so that you could stand here and hand me a folder in front of a bank of cameras and be the man who saved it.
Put it away. I don't need it. I stopped needing it a while ago, and I think the hardest part of all of this is that I didn't know how to tell you that, so you never got the chance to find out. "
"I was only trying to—"
"I know what you were trying to do." And she did.
That was the whole tragedy of it, standing there in the dirt in her hard hat while he stood there with a fortune open in a leather folder, the two of them finally, completely fluent in exactly the wrong language, translating love into the one currency the other couldn't spend.
"The answer was never going to be a check.
It was never going to be the biggest thing you could find to buy.
You keep reaching for the size of the thing, Beckett.
Bigger and bigger. And that has never once been where I live. "
And he closed the folder.
In front of the cameras, in front of his own two lawyers, in front of the foundation chair and the whole silent tent, he closed the leather folder and tucked it back under his arm, and he nodded, once, and his face did a thing she had not watched it do in years, which was to simply take the hit, full on, and not manage it, and not spin it, and not reach for the next play.
"Okay," he said, low, just to her, under the cameras.
"Okay. I hear you. I'm sorry I made it a scene.
" And he turned and walked back across the dirt to the town car and got in and left, and it was, she realized, watching the car pull away down the gravel, the very first time in the whole long ugly business that he had done the exact thing she needed him to do, which was to lose gracefully, and go.

Julian found her down by the water afterward, when the tent was coming down behind them in the wind and the caterer was stacking gold chairs into a truck.
"That was genuinely brutal to watch," he said, coming up beside her. "You all right?"
"No. Yes. I don't know." She looked out at the gray harbor, at the failing seawall that was going to lose, and the building that was going to stand up over it anyway.
"He finally listened. Four years too late, in a hard hat, in front of a design blog, but he listened.
He actually heard me. I don't know what I'm supposed to do with that. "
"Can I make it more complicated for you?"
She turned and looked at him.
"Come be my partner," Julian said. "Not a hire, not a contractor.
A partner. Your name up next to mine on the door of the firm.
Reyes and Fairbanks, or Fairbanks and Reyes, I genuinely do not care, I'll flip you a coin for the order right here.
I have spent ten years building toward my own firm and I have never once wanted to share it with another living soul, until I stood in the back of that committee room and watched you win it.
" He paused, and his voice dropped, and it stopped being about the firm.
"And I'll be straight with you, because you'd know if I wasn't. There's a version of this where it's only ever the work, and there's a version somewhere down the line where it isn't, and I'd be lying to your face if I said I hadn't thought about the second one.
But the offer stands either way, completely, no strings.
The firm is real and it's yours if you want it, whatever you decide about anything else. "
The wind came off the water and went straight through her coat again the way it had that first day at the fence.
A door stood wide open in front of her. A whole clean bright life with her own name on the door and a good, funny, decent man beside her who had never once, not for a single second, made her feel like the paperwork.
And behind her, two hours north, a marriage sat waiting with a ring in a dish, and a man who had just, finally, for the first time, taken the hit full in the chest and driven away without a word.
"I need to think," she said.
"I know you do," Julian said. "That's the only answer that would've been true, and you'd have been a worse partner if you'd said anything else.
Take all the time you need. The dirt's not going anywhere.
" And he left her standing there at the water's edge to think, and she stood a long while with two whole separate lives pulling at her from opposite directions, and for once, just for a minute, she didn't reach for either one of them.
She just watched the harbor take the last of the afternoon light, and let herself, for one more minute, be nobody's wife and nobody's partner, only the woman who'd built the thing that was going to stand up out of the water right there in front of her.
