Chapter 24 The Sister in the Room
Audrey could not move.
The young woman stood beside Richard with her hands loosely clasped in front of her.
She looked frightened.
Not triumphant.
Not threatening.
Frightened.
Her dark hair fell around a pale face, and a faded yellow ribbon was tied around her wrist.
Audrey stared at it.
“I know that ribbon.”
The woman swallowed.
“I know.”
Richard watched them with an expression of quiet satisfaction.
“This is what you wanted, isn't it?”
Audrey ignored him.
She looked at the woman.
“What is your name?”
The woman hesitated.
“Anna.”
“Anna what?”
“Anna Vale.”
Audrey's heart beat faster.
“Vale?”
She nodded.
“My name was changed.”
“By Richard?”
Anna looked at him.
“Yes.”
Richard's expression remained calm.
Audrey took a step forward.
“Are you really my sister?”
Anna's eyes filled with tears.
“Yes.”
Lydia moved beside Audrey.
“Don't go near her.”
Anna looked at Lydia.
“You still don't trust me.”
“I don't trust anyone standing beside Richard.”
Anna's expression tightened.
“He isn't the person you think he is.”
Lydia laughed bitterly.
“He's worse.”
Richard raised a hand.
“Enough.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“You forged the birth records.”
Richard looked at him.
“I corrected them.”
“You stole a child.”
“I protected her.”
Audrey's expression hardened.
“Stop using that word.”
Richard looked at her.
“Why?”
“Because everyone who has hurt me uses it to excuse themselves.”
For the first time, his expression shifted.
Audrey pointed toward Anna.
“Tell me what happened.”
Richard remained silent.
Anna answered instead.
“I was taken from the hospital.”
“By Richard?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Mara was dying.”
Audrey's eyes widened.
“You knew Mara?”
Anna nodded.
“I was too young to remember much. But I remember her voice.”
“What did she say?”
Anna looked down.
“She told me I had to protect you.”
Audrey felt a sharp ache in her chest.
“You were the one she chose?”
Anna shook her head.
“No.”
“What do you mean?”
“Mara didn't choose me.”
Anna looked at Richard.
“He did.”
Richard stepped forward.
“You don't understand what was happening.”
Audrey turned toward him.
“Then explain it.”
“Mara knew she was dying. She knew Richard would come after you.”
“Why me?”
“Because of your inheritance.”
Anna shook her head.
“That isn't the whole truth.”
Richard looked at her.
“Be careful.”
Anna took a breath.
“Mara knew the trust was only part of it.”
Audrey stared.
“What else was there?”
Anna looked at Lydia.
“Tell her.”
Lydia shook her head.
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because she deserves to hear it from Mara.”
Anna looked at Audrey.
“Your mother left another recording.”
Audrey's heart raced.
“Where?”
Anna pointed toward the file room.
“Behind the records.”
Ethan moved toward the shelves.
Richard stepped forward.
“Don't.”
Ethan stopped.
“Why?”
“Because you won't like what you find.”
Audrey looked at him.
“That's becoming your favorite sentence.”
Richard's face hardened.
Ethan pulled a box from the shelf.
Inside was a small recording device.
He handed it to Audrey.
Her fingers trembled as she pressed the button.
Static filled the room.
Then Claire's voice.
“If you're hearing this, Audrey, then the truth has finally caught up with you.”
Audrey closed her eyes.
Claire continued.
“I need you to understand something. I did not give birth to you.”
Audrey opened her eyes.
Ethan looked at her.
Claire's voice continued.
“I chose you.”
A tear slipped down Audrey's cheek.
“That choice was the greatest privilege of my life.”
The recording paused.
Then Claire spoke again.
“Your biological mother, Mara, asked me to protect both of her children.”
Audrey looked at Anna.
“Both.”
“Yes,” Anna whispered.
Claire continued.
“Richard discovered that Mara had twins. He believed one child could be used to control the other.”
Audrey's breathing slowed.
“He wanted to separate you.”
The recording continued.
“I refused.”
A man's voice could suddenly be heard in the background.
Richard.
“You don't have a choice.”
Claire answered,
“I always have a choice.”
The recording ended.
Audrey stared at the device.
Richard looked away.
Ethan turned toward him.
“You threatened her.”
“Yes.”
“You killed her.”
Richard's expression became cold.
“I didn't intend for her to die.”
“But she did.”
“Yes.”
“Because of you.”
Richard didn't answer.
Anna stepped forward.
“You left something out.”
Richard looked at her.
She held his gaze.
“You told Mara that if she refused to surrender Audrey, you would take Anna too.”
Audrey looked at her.
“What?”
Anna nodded.
“Mara gave you one child.”
Richard's face remained expressionless.
“That's a lie.”
“No.”
Anna's voice shook.
“She gave you me.”
Audrey stared.
“You were taken so I could stay.”
Anna nodded.
“Mara believed that if Richard had me, he would leave you alone.”
Audrey felt sick.
“She sacrificed you.”
Anna's eyes filled.
“She tried to save us both.”
Lydia stepped closer.
“And Richard made sure neither of you knew the truth.”
Richard's voice became sharp.
“Enough.”
He reached inside his coat.
Ethan immediately moved in front of Audrey.
But Anna stepped toward Richard.
“No.”
Richard looked at her.
“You promised.”
“I changed my mind.”
“You don't get to change your mind.”
Anna's voice became steadier.
“You taught me that people who control others eventually lose them.”
Richard stared at her.
“I gave you everything.”
“You gave me a cage.”
Silence.
Then Anna reached into her coat.
Audrey tensed.
Anna pulled out a small memory card.
“I took this from Richard's office.”
Richard's face changed.
“What did you do?”
“I made a copy.”
She handed it to Audrey.
“Everything you need is on it.”
Audrey took it.
“What is it?”
“Proof.”
“Of what?”
“Why Richard needed you married to Ethan.”
Audrey looked at Ethan.
He nodded.
“Let's see it.”
They moved toward the computer.
Richard didn't stop them.
That frightened Audrey.
Ethan inserted the card.
A folder appeared.
Inside were dozens of documents.
Financial transfers.
Trust agreements.
Medical records.
Birth certificates.
Private correspondence.
Then one file caught Audrey's attention.
PROJECT TWO CHILDREN.
Her blood ran cold.
She opened it.
A list appeared.
Subject A: Audrey Parker.
Subject B: Anna Vale.
Underneath were several dates.
Then a final note:
Subject A will retain legal identity. Subject B will remain outside the trust structure.
Audrey stared.
“What does that mean?”
Anna answered quietly.
“It means they wanted you to be the heir.”
Audrey looked at her.
“And you?”
“They wanted me to disappear.”
Ethan scrolled further.
Another document appeared.
Marriage contingency: Ethan Calloway to Audrey Parker.
Audrey's heart tightened.
Then another line appeared.
Purpose: Consolidation of Parker and Calloway interests.
Ethan stared at the screen.
“I knew about the marriage plan.”
“But not this.”
“No.”
Audrey kept scrolling.
Then she stopped.
There was a final document.
It contained a name she had never expected.
Mara Vale — Final Authorization.
Audrey stared.
“She signed something.”
Anna stepped closer.
“That document is why Richard kept you alive.”
Audrey opened it.
The page contained one sentence:
If Audrey reaches adulthood and marries Ethan Calloway, control of the trust shall transfer to the child bearing Mara's bloodline.
Audrey frowned.
“But that's me.”
Anna shook her head.
“Read the last line.”
Audrey's eyes moved downward.
Her face went pale.
If Audrey refuses the marriage, the trust passes to Subject B.
She looked at Anna.
“You.”
Anna nodded.
Richard had been trying to control both sisters.
If Audrey married Ethan, the trust remained within his reach.
If Audrey refused, Anna would inherit.
Either way, he had planned to control the outcome.
Audrey looked at Richard.
“You never cared about the trust.”
His expression hardened.
“You're finally beginning to understand.”
“You wanted both of us.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Richard stepped closer.
“Because your grandfather built something more valuable than money.”
“What?”
“A private network of companies.”
Ethan stared at the documents.
“Companies that could control entire industries.”
Richard nodded.
“Your grandfather built it. Mara inherited the legal authority. When she died, the authority passed to her children.”
Audrey's heart pounded.
“So that's what this has always been about.”
“Yes.”
“Power.”
Richard smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Ethan shook his head.
“You destroyed an entire family for it.”
Richard's expression changed.
“I built this family.”
“No.”
Ethan stepped forward.
“You broke it.”
For a moment, father and son stood facing each other.
Then Richard looked toward Anna.
“Tell them what you did.”
Anna's face went pale.
Audrey turned.
“What does he mean?”
Anna didn't answer.
Richard smiled.
“Tell your sister.”
Anna's eyes filled with tears.
“I made a deal with him.”
Audrey stared.
“What deal?”
Anna looked at her.
“I helped Richard keep track of you.”
Silence.
Audrey felt as though the floor had shifted.
“How long?”
“Years.”
“You watched me?”
“Yes.”
“You knew about my marriage?”
“Yes.”
“You knew what he was doing?”
“I knew some of it.”
Audrey stepped back.
“And you said you wanted to protect me.”
“I did.”
“Then why?”
Anna's voice broke.
“Because he had something I needed.”
“What?”
“A recording of Mara.”
Audrey's heart sank.
“You traded me for a recording?”
“No.”
Anna shook her head.
“I thought I could get the recording and then expose him.”
“But you never did.”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because every time I tried, he threatened someone else.”
Audrey stared at her.
“Who?”
Anna looked at Lydia.
“Lydia.”
Lydia went still.
Richard smiled.
“She was always your weakness.”
Anna's expression changed.
“You said you wouldn't hurt her.”
“I said nothing.”
Audrey understood.
Richard had controlled Anna the same way he had controlled everyone else.
Fear.
Threats.
Secrets.
He had built an empire from people's desperation.
Then the building's alarm sounded.
Ethan looked toward the ceiling.
“We need to leave.”
Graham checked his phone.
“Police are approaching.”
Richard smiled.
“Not police.”
Ethan frowned.
“What?”
Richard looked at Audrey.
“Your husband's security team.”
Ethan pulled out his phone.
Nothing.
His screen went black.
Richard had cut the signal.
A loud crash came from the corridor.
Someone was forcing the outer door.
Richard stepped backward.
“This is where you choose.”
Audrey looked at him.
“Choose what?”
“Your husband.”
She frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Richard pointed toward Ethan.
“Come with me, and I give you everything.”
He pointed toward Anna.
“Stay with them, and she dies.”
Audrey's heart stopped.
Anna whispered,
“Don't listen to him.”
Richard smiled.
“Three seconds.”
The door behind them began to break.
“Two.”
Ethan reached for Audrey's hand.
“One.”
The door exploded inward.
Men rushed into the room.
And among them was Marcus.
He looked directly at Richard.
“It's over.”
Richard smiled.
“No.”
He looked at Audrey.
“It has only begun.”
Then he pulled a remote from his pocket.
Every light in the hospital switched on at once.
The walls around them began to glow.
A hidden system had activated.
And on every screen appeared the same message:
THE SECOND CHILD HAS BEEN FOUND.
Audrey looked at Anna.
Anna was staring at her in terror.
Then Anna whispered,
“That's not the message we should be afraid of.”
“What is?”
Anna pointed toward the final screen.
A second line appeared.
THE FIRST CHILD IS MISSING.
Audrey's blood ran cold.
She looked at Ethan.
He had already understood.
Someone had taken one of the sisters.
But both women were standing in the room.
Then Audrey realized the message wasn't talking about her.
It was talking about Anna.
Because according to the records, Anna was Subject B.
And Audrey was Subject A.
Yet the system claimed Subject A was missing.
A man's voice came through the speakers.
“Congratulations.”
The voice belonged to James.
Ethan's father.
But James was supposed to be dead.
