Chapter 27 The Memory That Lied

Audrey stared at the message until the words blurred.

It wasn't Richard.

It was Claire.

Her mother.

The woman whose last words had been filled with love.

The woman Audrey had spent years defending.

The woman whose sacrifices had shaped every part of her life.

Ethan took the phone from her.

“Who sent this?”

“I don't know.”

He read the messages again.

James turned from the front seat.

“Don't believe it.”

Audrey looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because Richard knows exactly how to use your memories against you.”

“But I remember Clara.”

James went quiet.

Audrey noticed.

“You know that name.”

“Yes.”

“Who was she?”

James hesitated.

“Someone Claire tried to protect.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“No.”

“Then give me the answer.”

James looked at her through the mirror.

“Clara was Richard's daughter.”

The car went silent.

Audrey stared.

“His daughter?”

“Yes.”

“Then why was she with me?”

“Because Claire took her.”

“Why?”

James looked away.

“Because Richard was hurting her.”

Ethan's face tightened.

“And Claire hid her?”

“Yes.”

“For how long?”

“Several years.”

Audrey looked at the message.

“Then why do I remember Claire pushing her?”

James didn't answer.

Audrey's voice became sharper.

“Why?”

“Because you may have seen something that wasn't real.”

“How?”

“Richard used recordings.”

“Recordings?”

“He could alter them.”

Audrey looked at him.

“You're saying my memory was manipulated.”

“Yes.”

She shook her head.

“I remember the window.”

“I know.”

“I remember Clara crying.”

“I know.”

“I remember Claire standing behind her.”

James closed his eyes.

“You were six.”

Audrey felt tears burn behind her eyes.

“And if I wasn't remembering correctly?”

“Then someone wanted you to remember it incorrectly.”

She looked at Ethan.

“What do you think?”

He was silent.

“I think we need evidence.”

She nodded.

“That is the only answer that makes sense anymore.”

The coastal mansion appeared just after midnight.

It stood on a cliff above the sea.

Tall windows.

Gray stone.

A narrow tower.

The waves crashed below.

Audrey recognized it from old family photographs.

She had never visited.

Yet the place felt familiar.

James looked at the house.

“Richard will be inside.”

Marcus checked his weapon.

“Security?”

“Extensive.”

Ethan looked at Audrey.

“You stay behind me.”

She shook her head.

“No.”

He paused.

“I know.”

She gave him a faint smile.

“You're learning.”

He nodded.

“I am.”

They entered through the rear.

The house was dark.

Too dark.

Marcus moved ahead.

Graham checked the hall.

Nothing.

Then Audrey heard music.

A piano.

Soft.

Slow.

She stopped.

“That song.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What?”

“My mother used to play it.”

They followed the sound.

The music room was empty.

The piano was playing by itself.

A recording.

On the music stand sat another envelope.

Audrey approached.

Her name was written on it.

She opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Audrey and Clara as children.

Both sitting beside the piano.

Audrey touched the image.

“I remember this.”

Ethan looked over her shoulder.

“What happened that day?”

“I don't know.”

A recording started.

Claire's voice filled the room.

“Audrey, if you're hearing this, then Richard has found the house.”

Audrey's heart tightened.

Claire continued.

“There's something I never told you.”

The recording paused.

Then:

“Clara was not Richard's biological daughter.”

Audrey looked at Ethan.

“What?”

Claire continued.

“Richard believed she was.”

The room seemed to grow colder.

“Clara was actually Mara's daughter.”

Audrey froze.

Ethan stared at the speaker.

“No.”

Claire continued.

“Mara had two children.”

Audrey's hands began to shake.

“One was Audrey.”

The recording paused.

“The other was Clara.”

Audrey stopped breathing.

Then Claire's voice returned.

“Anna was not Mara's child.”

Anna.

The woman Richard had taken.

Audrey's mind raced.

Claire continued.

“She was the daughter of another woman in the family.”

Audrey looked at Ethan.

“So Anna isn't my sister.”

“No.”

“But Clara…”

“May have been.”

The recording stopped.

The lights came on.

Richard stood in the doorway.

Anna stood beside him.

And behind them was the woman from upstairs.

She looked directly at Audrey.

Audrey knew her face.

Not from the hospital.

Not from the photograph.

From childhood.

“Clara.”

The woman nodded.

“Yes.”

Audrey's voice broke.

“You're alive.”

“I never died.”

“Why did you let everyone believe you were dead?”

Clara looked at Richard.

“Because he told me I would never see you again if I didn't.”

Richard smiled.

Audrey stepped forward.

“You manipulated me.”

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

“I tried to protect you.”

“By letting me believe you were dead?”

“I was afraid.”

“You were my friend.”

“I know.”

“Then why?”

Clara looked down.

“Because I believed Richard.”

Audrey looked at Anna.

“And her?”

Clara's expression softened.

“She helped me escape.”

Anna stepped forward.

“I didn't know who I was supposed to trust.”

Audrey frowned.

“So why did Richard say she was the second child?”

“Because he wanted you to believe the wrong story.”

Audrey looked at Richard.

“You've been moving everyone like pieces.”

He smiled.

“People are easier to control when they think they understand the game.”

Ethan stepped forward.

“This ends tonight.”

Richard looked at him.

“Does it?”

He pointed toward the table.

A document lay there.

“Read it.”

Ethan approached.

His face changed.

“What is this?”

Richard smiled.

“The original trust.”

Audrey walked closer.

The document was signed by Mara.

But the beneficiary section had been changed.

Audrey read the final clause.

Upon the death of Mara Vale, all assets shall pass to her surviving child.

She looked at Clara.

“Then you're the heir.”

Clara nodded.

Richard's smile widened.

“Exactly.”

Ethan stared.

“Why did you need Audrey?”

Richard looked at him.

“To force Clara out of hiding.”

Audrey felt a cold realization.

“The marriage.”

“Yes.”

“You needed me married to Ethan because you knew Clara would eventually come for me.”

Richard nodded.

“You were the bait.”

Audrey's face hardened.

“And Ethan?”

“A useful distraction.”

Ethan's expression darkened.

“You never cared about my company.”

Richard laughed.

“I cared about everything you could control.”

Then Clara stepped forward.

“You lied to me.”

Richard turned.

“What?”

“You told me Audrey was dangerous.”

“I told you what you needed to hear.”

“You said she caused Mara's death.”

“Yes.”

Clara's voice shook.

“You said Claire betrayed us.”

“Yes.”

“You made me hate the wrong person.”

Richard shrugged.

“Hatred is useful.”

Clara looked at Audrey.

“I believed him.”

Audrey's voice softened.

“I know.”

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

“I am sorry.”

Audrey wanted to be angry.

Instead, she felt tired.

“So am I.”

A sudden noise came from outside.

Marcus looked toward the windows.

“Police.”

Richard smiled.

“No.”

Ethan listened.

Sirens.

Then another sound.

Helicopters.

Richard's smile disappeared.

“Who called them?”

Marcus answered.

“I did.”

Richard looked at him.

“You've been planning this.”

Marcus nodded.

“For years.”

Richard reached for the trust.

Ethan moved faster.

He grabbed the document.

Richard lunged.

The two men struggled.

Audrey stepped back.

Clara pulled Anna away.

A gunshot sounded.

Everyone froze.

Richard had a weapon.

Ethan stood still.

Richard's hand shook.

“You don't understand.”

Ethan stared at him.

“No.”

He shook his head.

“I understand perfectly.”

“You think this is about money.”

“It isn't.”

Richard's expression twisted.

“Then what?”

Ethan looked toward Audrey.

“It is about choice.”

Richard fired.

Ethan moved.

The bullet struck the wall.

Marcus tackled Richard.

The weapon fell.

Police stormed the room.

Within seconds, Richard was restrained.

Audrey watched him being taken away.

For the first time, he looked small.

Not powerful.

Not untouchable.

Just an old man surrounded by the consequences of his choices.

Clara came to Audrey.

“I don't expect you to forgive me.”

Audrey looked at her.

“I don't know if I can.”

Clara nodded.

“I understand.”

“But I want to know the truth.”

Clara swallowed.

“There is one thing you still don't know.”

“What?”

Clara looked toward the trust document.

“Mara never signed it.”

Audrey frowned.

“What?”

Clara pointed toward the signature.

“It was forged.”

Ethan looked at the document.

“Then who created the trust?”

Clara whispered,

“Claire.”

Audrey stared.

“My mother?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Claire knew Mara's children would be hunted.”

Audrey's heart tightened.

“Then the trust was never about money.”

Clara shook her head.

“No.”

“What was it about?”

Clara looked at Audrey.

“Finding the child who was switched at birth.”

Audrey froze.

Clara continued.

“The real heir is not me.”

She pointed toward Audrey.

“It's you.”

Silence.

Audrey shook her head.

“That can't be.”

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

“Claire knew.”

“Then why did she hide it?”

“Because the person who switched you at birth is still alive.”

Audrey's blood ran cold.

“Who?”

Clara looked toward the doorway.

Evelyn stood there.

She had arrived with the police.

Her face was pale.

Audrey stared.

“No.”

Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.

“I was trying to protect you.”

Audrey stepped toward her.

“You switched me?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Not you.”

“Then who?”

Evelyn looked at Clara.

Then at Anna.

Then finally at Audrey.

“I switched the babies.”

The room fell silent.

Ethan stared at her.

“Why?”

Evelyn whispered,

“Because Claire asked me to.”

Audrey's world seemed to stop.

Her mother had asked Evelyn to switch the babies.

And suddenly the entire truth changed again.

Then Evelyn said the words that shattered everything:

“Because the child Claire gave birth to wasn't Audrey.”

She pointed toward Anna.

“It was her.”
