With each flutter of her lashes, it makes my heart ache with how much I love her.

How cruel must a person be to think that a child deserves any kind of punishment like what I received?

“Baby?” Cade appears from the hall, running his fingers through his hair with a yawn. “Is everything okay?” His sleepy eyes narrow on my cheeks. “Are you crying?”

I give in to the tremble in my lips, brushing my fingertips over Sage’s tiny forehead as she eats. “I just love her so much.” A teardrop falls to her arm, startling her to relatch on my tender nipple and resume her snack.

My husband comes to the side of the rocking chair and wraps his warm palm behind my neck to press a hard kiss to the top of my head. “This is why you’re an amazing momma.”

Maybe it’s the hormones making me extra emotional but I doubt it.

The feelings are the same as they were when Grace was born two years ago, with a little more confidence though.

I’ve learned I don’t have any of the viciousness in my heart that my mother carried. Cade was right, our little girls will be spoiled beyond belief.

“Is she out for the count?” He reaches down to cup the back of her fuzzy blonde tufts. “I can take her, Ros. You go lie down.”

I don’t argue, pushing myself out of the chair as he curls our sleeping infant into the crook of his arm with expert ease. I don’t think he ever looks sexier than when he’s the adoring father.

Another flood of tears fall, making him stop when he glances at me.

“Ros?” Concern knits his brows. Then he pulls me tight to his other side. “Tell me.”

There’s that lace of command in his voice that sends a hot wave through me. “I just can’t believe this is my life now. I never thought it could be like this.”

His jaw tics as he holds me. “Like what, baby? Waking up at four am?” He gives a small chuckle.

It doesn’t cover the intensity of how he’s watching me.

“Of it being this perfect,” I sigh. “I just wish that I could go back in time and tell a younger me that this was going to be my future. That everything would be better. That I was surviving to thrive.” I raise onto my toes and kiss the corner of his mouth, then peel away from his warmth to aim for our bedroom.

“It sounds like you’ll have a nice visit with Evelyn today.” He pats my hip as I leave.

I look forward to seeing her and never plan on quitting. She’s helped me readjust to being human.

And to appreciate this new life that I grabbed by the reins and chose.
