My knuckles bounce off his door again. “Devon! They’re here!” It’s too damn hot to be standing here on his porch.

I guess it’s one of the best days to check fridge and freezer temps though.

“Coming!” His voice carries from inside.

Then he bursts out, his hair wild around his head. “Sorry. I was up cleaning all damn night.”

“It’ll be fine, Dev. You are going to scrub the stainless out of the steel if you keep that up.” I pat him on the arm and walk with him towards the new building where two state inspector SUVs sit out front.

“Fuck. It looks bad I ain’t there already.” He runs his hands over his face and tucks in his shirt.

“Lean over.” I flip my fingers at him until he complies, then I quickly smooth the cowlick sticking up. “Better.”

“Thanks,” he grunts.

I’m not exactly sure when it happened. But my little brother suddenly is a grown ass adult. “Just remember, no matter what, I’m proud of you.”

He’s taken on this entire enterprise himself. From the design, the funding, he even has employees lined up.

All because a girl he liked in high school said she loved ice cream and asked if he could make it. The irony is she had zero interest and left him for college two years ago.

I’m glad the idea stuck. He’s driven to prove himself.

“Good luck, bud.” I wave from the parking lot.

So much of me wants to go with him. I’m not sure how I resist.

Instead, I turn towards the house and find my sexy hubby leaning back on the couch strumming his guitar while our kiddos sit on the floor in front of him singing along.

When the final chord hits and they clap and cheer, I join in.

“You sound like rock stars!” I cheer, throwing my arms in the air.

Blue tilts his chin for me to grab from behind him to drop a kiss over the back of the couch. “And I’m your biggest groupie,” I whisper.

“Mommy? Is Uncle Devon bringing ice cream tonight?” Beau falls backwards dramatically, almost knocking his sister over as he rolls to kick his legs up. His elbow glances off her knee making her eyes well up.

“Not yet, next week. Apologize to Leah and please watch where you’re somersaulting.” I give my four year old the look until his lip juts out.

“Sorry.” He pats her leg gently, then flattens himself on the rug. “I want ice cream,” he mutters.

“We all have things we can’t have the second we want them.

” Blue stretches and throws me a wink. “Patience is important.” His mustache twitches up as he moves to me.

His palm braces on the counter to frame me against it, finding the nape of my neck to tickle it with his whiskers.

“No matter how bad we want it at the moment.”

His teeth send bolts of fire through me, then he reaches past to grab the plates from the cupboard. “Are we still going up to the ranch tomorrow?”

“Um. You turn off my brain and then ask me a question?” I giggle. “Devon said he’d watch the kids. I don’t care where we end up.” As I start doling out the broccoli onto the dishes, I reach behind with my other hand to cup his groin. “Anywhere is perfect.”
