Chapter 12 Glorias Offer, Marlenes Choice

The diner smelled like coffee and bacon grease and the particular staleness of air that hadn't moved since the lunch rush ended.

Marlene pushed through the door at 3:47 p.m., and the bell above her head jangled with a familiarity that made her teeth ache.

She'd heard that bell a thousand times. Ten thousand times.

Every shift for three years, that same tinny announcement: someone walking in, someone walking out, someone's life moving while she stood behind the counter pouring coffee.

The diner was empty.

Empty of customers, anyway. The vinyl booths sat with their cracked red seats gleaming under the fluorescent lights.

The counter stretched its familiar length, stools tucked beneath like soldiers at attention.

The pie case held one sad slice of cherry, the meringue on top beginning to weep.

Hattie must have left early—her apron hung on its hook by the kitchen door, and the grill had been scraped clean.

Marlene walked to the counter. Ran her fingers along its worn edge. The laminate was chipped in places, burn-marked in others. She'd memorized every imperfection. Every coffee stain. Every spot where the sugar dispenser always stuck.

She reached under the counter and pulled out the napkin holder. Refilled it from the box beneath the register. An automatic gesture. Muscle memory.

Then she stopped.

"What am I doing?"

Her voice echoed in the empty diner. She set the napkin holder down. Wiped her hands on her jeans.

She hadn't come here to refill napkins.

"Thought I heard someone come in."

The voice came from the corner booth—the one by the window, the one with the torn seat that Hattie kept meaning to reupholster.

Marlene turned, and there was Mrs. Calloway, silver-streaked hair pulled back in a clip, housecoat draped over her shoulders like a cape.

She had a cup of coffee in front of her and a newspaper folded to the crossword.

The television mounted above the counter was off—unusual, for Mrs. Calloway. Unusual enough that Marlene noticed.

"Mrs. Calloway." Marlene's brow furrowed. "I didn't see you when I came in."

"Most folks don't." The older woman's smile was thin and knowing. "I've got a talent for blending into corners. Comes from years of being the one people forget to look for."

Marlene didn't know what to say to that.

She'd lived above Mrs. Calloway for three years.

They'd exchanged maybe fifty words in all that time—polite hellos on the stairs, an occasional comment about the weather, a shared complaint about the radiator.

The woman was a presence, not a person. A television soundtrack filtering through the floorboards.

Yet here she was. In the diner. At 3:47 on a Tuesday. Waiting.

"You're not working today," Mrs. Calloway said. It wasn't a question.

"No." Marlene hesitated. "I came to talk to Hattie. I'm—" She stopped. The word quitting felt too heavy for the empty diner. Too final. "I'm leaving Grady."

Mrs. Calloway nodded. As if she'd expected this. As if she'd been waiting for Marlene to say exactly those words.

"Hattie left early," she said. "Digestive troubles. She said to tell anyone who came looking that she'd be back tomorrow." A pause. "But you're not coming back tomorrow, are you?"

"No."

"Then sit." Mrs. Calloway gestured to the bench across from her. "I've got something to say to you, and I'd rather say it face-to-face than through the floorboards."

Marlene's heart kicked. The eviction notice.

Of course. Mrs. Calloway must have heard something—must have seen Harold Vance tacking the paper to her door, or overheard her packing through the thin walls.

Maybe the older woman was here to apologize.

To offer condolences. To say what everyone in Grady said when things went wrong: What a shame. What a shame.

Marlene slid into the booth. The torn vinyl scratched the back of her thighs through her jeans.

The table between them was laminated in that faux-wood pattern that every diner in America seemed to own, and someone had carved initials into the corner—J.L. + K.M. —sometime in the distant past.

She'd never noticed them before. Three years, and she'd never noticed.

Mrs. Calloway folded her newspaper. Set it aside. Wrapped both hands around her coffee mug like she was warming them.

"I know about the notice," she said.

"I figured."

"I know who called Harold Vance to make it happen."

Marlene's jaw tightened. "I figured that too."

"Your father." Mrs. Calloway's voice was flat.

Matter-of-fact. "John Cross has been playing poker with Harold every Thursday at the Elks Lodge for fifteen years. I know because my husband used to play with them. Before he died."

She took a sip of her coffee. "Your father owes Harold money. More than he can pay. The eviction was a trade. Your apartment, in exchange for the debt."

The words landed like stones dropped into still water. Ripples spread outward, disturbing everything they touched.

Marlene's hands curled around the edge of the table. "He traded my home to settle a gambling debt."

"He did."

"And you know this how?"

"Because Harold told me." Mrs. Calloway's eyes met hers.

Pale blue, watery with age, but sharp. Sharper than Marlene had ever noticed.

"Harold tells me a lot of things. He's been trying to get me to sell my unit for years—thinks I'm too old to live alone, thinks I should move into that assisted-living facility over on Maple. He calls me every month like clockwork. 'Gloria, you've got to think about your future. Gloria,

the stairs are getting harder. Gloria, let me help you.'" Her voice went hard on the last word.

"Help. As if evicting a young woman from her home is help."

Marlene stared at her. "You call him Harold."

"I call a lot of people by their first names. You should try it. It takes away their power."

Another sip of coffee. "The point is, I know what your father did. And I know what Harold did. And I know you've been up there packing boxes for the past week, and I know about the soldier who came to see you back in September."

The air in the diner changed. Thickened.

"You know about Gideon?"

"I know he came up the stairs at midnight and didn't come down until morning. I know he came back the next day with a duffel bag and left ten minutes later with a look on his face like someone had ripped his heart out. I know you've been wearing his dog tags under your shirt ever since."

Mrs. Calloway set her mug down. "I'm old, Marlene. I'm not deaf. And I'm not blind."

Marlene's hand went to her throat without thinking. Found the chain. The tags were warm against her sternum, hidden beneath her sweater. She pulled them out. Let them gleam under the fluorescent lights.

> GIDEON, MARCUS T.

"His name is Marcus," she said quietly. "Gideon. Marcus T. Gideon. He's—" She stopped. Swallowed. "He's deployed. I don't know where. I don't know for how long. But he said he'd find me when he came back. And I believe him."

Mrs. Calloway looked at the dog tags for a long moment. Then she nodded.

"I believe you," she said. "Which is why I'm here."

Marlene waited.

The diner hummed. The refrigerator behind the counter cycled on. Outside, a car passed—the first one in ten minutes, the only one in ten minutes. Grady's Saturday afternoon traffic, such as it was.

"I own my unit," Mrs. Calloway said. "Bought it twenty years ago, when Harold's father was still managing the building. Paid it off in fifteen. It's mine, free and clear. Two bedrooms. One bath. Bigger than yours, with better light." She paused. "And I'm not planning to die in it."

Marlene's brow furrowed. "I don't understand."

"No, I don't suppose you do." Mrs. Calloway leaned forward.

The housecoat slipped off one shoulder, and she tugged it back with an absent gesture.

"I'm seventy-eight years old. My husband's been dead six years. My daughter lives in Portland with her wife and two children, and she's been asking me to move out there since the day I buried my Frank. I've been saying no because—" She stopped.

Looked around the diner, at the cracked vinyl and the weeping pie and the empty counter.

"Because I thought if I left, I'd be abandoning something. I didn't know what. Now I think maybe I was just afraid of starting over."

Marlene didn't speak. Couldn't. The conversation had shifted beneath her feet like a sidewalk cracking open.

"I'm ready to start over," Mrs. Calloway continued.

"I'm ready to move to Portland and meet my grandchildren before they're too old to care about a grandmother they've only seen on video calls. But I won't sell my unit to Harold Vance. I won't give him the satisfaction."

Her eyes met Marlene's. "I want to sell it to you."

The refrigerator cycled off.

The diner held its breath.

"I can't afford to buy an apartment," Marlene said. The words came out automatic. Practical. The daughter of a hardware store owner, counting costs. "I've been waitressing for three years. I have maybe four thousand dollars in savings. That's not a down payment. That's not even—"

"I'm not asking for market value." Mrs. Calloway cut her off with a wave of her hand.

"I'm asking for what you can afford. A hundred dollars a month. Rent-to-own. You take over the unit, you pay me directly, and when enough years have passed, it's yours. My daughter doesn't need the money. She's a software engineer."

The older woman's mouth curved. "She makes more in a year than Frank made in a decade. She told me to give the apartment away if I wanted. Said it would serve Harold right."

Marlene's throat tightened. "Why?"

"Because you're the first person in this building who's ever been kind to me without wanting something."

Mrs. Calloway's voice was quieter now. Almost gentle.

"Three years, Marlene. Three years of you saying hello on the stairs. Three years of you not complaining about my television, even though I know you could hear it through the floorboards.

Three years of you being the only neighbor who ever knocked on my door to check if I was all right when the heat went out."

"I did that once."

"Once was enough."

Marlene looked down at the table. At the carved initials. J.L. + K.M. Some long-ago couple who'd sat in this booth and carved their names into cheap laminate, thinking it meant forever. Maybe it had. Maybe forever was always smaller than you expected.

"I was planning to leave for California," she said.

"I know."

"I told him I'd be there when he came back. I promised."

"California's a big state." Mrs. Calloway's voice was dry. "Hard to find one woman in all of California, even for a soldier with training."

"But if I stay—"

"If you stay, you'll be right where he left you. Third floor. Same building. Same door he walked out of." The older woman leaned back. The vinyl creaked. "You don't have to decide today. My offer stands until November fifteenth. That's your deadline and mine."

Marlene's hand tightened around the dog tags. The embossed letters pressed into her palm, cool and familiar.

> GIDEON, MARCUS T.

Fifty-three days since he'd left. An unknown number until he returned.

And here was Mrs. Calloway, offering her a reason to stay—not trapped, not bound, not caged by her father's expectations.

But rooted. Chosen. A home that would be hers, not borrowed.

A door that would still have her name on it when Gideon climbed the stairs again.

"You don't even know me," Marlene said. "Not really."

"I know you stayed." Mrs. Calloway's eyes were steady.

"When that soldier knocked on your door and told you he was leaving, you stayed and you listened and you let him go. That takes a kind of strength most people don't have. The strength to let someone leave and still believe they'll come back."

She picked up her coffee mug. Drained the last of it.

"That's the kind of strength I want in my apartment. The kind that doesn't run."

Marlene's eyes burned.

"I'll think about it," she said.

"That's all I ask."

Mrs. Calloway slid out of the booth. She was smaller standing than she'd seemed sitting—her shoulders slightly stooped, her housecoat hanging loose on a frame that had shrunk with age. She pulled a folded envelope from her pocket and set it on the table between them.

"The details," she said. "Rent. Terms. My daughter's phone number in Portland, in case you have questions. Everything's in writing. I believe in writing."

"Mrs. Calloway—"

"Gloria." The older woman corrected her gently. "If we're going to be neighbors properly, you should call me Gloria."

"Gloria." The name felt strange on Marlene's tongue. New. Like trying on a coat that belonged to someone else and finding it fit. "Thank you. I don't know how to—I don't have the words."

"You have plenty of words. You just haven't had anyone worth using them on."

Gloria Calloway reached out and patted Marlene's hand—a quick, dry touch, there and gone.

"Read the papers. Think about it. And whatever you decide, don't let your father make the decision for you. He's had enough of your life. The rest is yours."

She walked toward the door. The bell jangled. The door swung shut.

Marlene sat alone in the booth, the envelope unopened before her, the dog tags warm against her chest, the empty diner humming its mechanical hum around her. The pie case light flickered. The initials on the table caught her eye again—J.L. and K.M., whoever they'd been, whatever had become of them.

She opened the envelope.

The papers inside were neatly typed, signed at the bottom in a shaky but legible hand.

Gloria M. Calloway. The terms were exactly what she'd said—a hundred dollars a month, rent-to-own, no interest, no hidden fees.

A gift wrapped in legal language. A doorway out of one cage and into something that didn't feel like a cage at all.

Marlene read it twice.

Then she folded the papers, slipped them back into the envelope, and stood.

She still had to find Hattie. Still had to quit the diner. Still had to figure out what she was doing about California, about Gideon, about the future she'd been planning since before a soldier with brown eyes walked into her life and remade it.

But for the first time in three years, the weight on her chest felt a little bit lighter.

The dog tags clinked against her collarbone as she walked toward the door.

The bell jangled.

Outside, the October sun was beginning its slow descent toward the horizon, and the streets of Grady stretched empty and quiet, and somewhere on the third floor of 14B Oak Street, a television murmured to an empty apartment, waiting for someone to come home.
