The Mistaken Twin: An Enemies-to-Lovers, Mistaken Identity Romance

1. IZZY

Isipped champagne from a crystal flute, my gaze fixed on my reflection in the floor-to-ceiling glass on the deck of the spacious, elegant beach house. The soft, rosy hue of the setting sun played tricks on my eyes, bathing my already sun-kissed skin in warm radiance.

The epitome of beauty and success, I said silently, admiring my look as my high spirits and enthusiastic energy bubbled to the surface, appearing on my glowing face. Well, okay. Soon enough, anyway.

My light brown hair, long and straight, tumbled down my bare back like a cascade of honey, and my blue-gray eyes shimmered with excitement as I felt the sea breeze kissing my skin. Breathing in the salty air and hearing the crashing waves in the background relaxed me.

I was clad in a strappy backless yellow dress with touches of white floral embroidery, made with my favorite eco-friendly fabric. I seemed to blend perfectly with the luxurious beach house’s light blue and beige color scheme, along with seashell and driftwood accents at every corner. The Pembroke vacation home never failed to impress me and make me feel at home at the same time.

“Oh, wow, Izzy! I sooo love your outfit!”

I turned around and grinned at my best friend, Tanya Pembroke, who looked perfectly amazing as always. “Hey, birthday girl!” I greeted, throwing my hands around her for a quick hug. “Happy, happy birthday! Are you ready to celebrate all night long?”

“Until the sun rises again in the morning!” Tanya replied with a laugh, raising her glass of champagne to clink it with mine. “You know how I party! And no one’s allowed to sulk or feel bad or anything like that at my parties.”

“Of course,” I agreed, giggling with her.

Tanya and I had been friends since childhood, growing up in the same San Francisco neighborhood. We were two peas in a pod, bonded by more than just shared memories of schoolyard antics and teenage secrets.

“So…is that going to be one of the designs for this business of yours?” she inquired, peering closer at my dress with a look of great interest and admiration on her face.

I nodded with a big smile. “I actually just made this on my sewing machine a few days ago.”

Tanya grasped both of my hands, looking super excited. “I’m really so happy for you! Finally, your dream is coming true! And I know that with your talent and experience as a fashion designer and your natural entrepreneurial skills, you’ll make it big with this business.”

My eyes sparkled with gratitude. “I can’t thank you enough for investing and getting some of your friends and relatives to do so as well. I can’t let anyone down, so I’m all set to give it my all.”

Tanya’s eyes shone with pride and excitement as she linked her arm with mine. “It’s my pleasure, Izzy. You’re incredibly talented, and I know your sustainable fashion line is going to take the world by storm. Plus, how can I resist supporting my best friend? You know you’ve always been like a sister to me.”

“Aww…you and me both,” I replied as we embraced again. Then I handed her a carefully wrapped package, which contained two dresses that I had specially designed and created for her.

Like a little kid, Tanya quickly put down her drink and opened the present. When she saw the contents, she was ecstatic. “These are so pretty! Your talent is just…” She paused, trying to search for the right word. Then laughing, she continued, “Let’s just say, I envy you in this regard. How I wish I could make such creations, you know?”

“Oh, don’t say that. You’re talented in a lot of other things, Tanya.”

“Like attracting all the wrong men?”

“Well, that applies to me too!”

We both laughed. Then leaning forward with a mischievous glint in her eye, Tanya whispered, “Well, I’ve got a little surprise for you, Izzy…”

My eyes narrowed with curiosity as I hung in suspense, waiting for her to go on. But she just grinned and straightened up, looking toward the shore, where a couple of hot, shirtless men were hanging out.

My champagne glass paused halfway to my lips as I spotted him—Daniel Hale—my ultimate celebrity crush, lounging on the beach and looking like a gleaming god carved by the hands of the heavens. Time momentarily slowed as I tried to catch my breath. It was as if the universe had conspired to grant me this extraordinary moment, and I wasn”t about to squander it.

My jaw dropped in disbelief, and I couldn’t take my eyes off him, my heartbeat quickening with each passing second. The remaining golden rays of the setting sun danced across his chiseled body.

He’s goddamn hot. And I’m beginning to sweat.

“Tanya, is that who I think it is?”

She nodded enthusiastically. “Yup! The one and only Daniel Hale! You won”t believe it, but I actually worked with him on a modeling project just last week. Come, I’ll introduce you!”

But before I could react, a group of Tanya’s cousins arrived, surrounding her like a protective shield. She glanced at me with an apologetic smile.

“Izzy, I’m so sorry, but I’ll be back. This’ll just take a sec. Please don’t go anywhere. I promise I’ll introduce you to Dan as soon as I can!”

I smiled. “Of course, no worries.” But when I glanced back at the beach, he was gone.

Well, surely I’ll bump into him sooner or later.

The thought made me grin. I couldn’t wait to have a selfie with the gorgeous social media influencer, especially while I was wearing my latest design. It could do wonders for creating a buzz for my up-and-coming business.

Night had fallen, and the beach house transformed into a luminous oasis. Strings of soft, twinkling lights illuminated the beach, and the lively chatter of guests merged with the upbeat music of the live band that had been hired to entertain us.

Sipping the cocktail in my hand, I suddenly felt a wave of dizziness. I decided to head inside and look for a quiet corner where I could sit and rest for a while. But then, I felt someone’s hand on my waist. It was Oliver, a childhood friend who’d grown up with Tanya and me.

“Hey, Izzy! A bunch of us had been wondering where you’d gone. Congratulations on your business!”

Suddenly, some of our other old friends came up too, all of them congratulating me on my new fashion venture and raising their drinks to toast my success.

“Cheers to Izzy’s successful business venture!” Leslie exclaimed over the loud music.

“Cheers!” everyone else shouted.

I was caught in the moment, the woozy feeling in my head melting away.

“So, what’s the name going to be for your brand?” Leslie wondered.

“EcoChic Couture,” I answered, brimming with excitement.

“Oh, I love it!” Leslie exclaimed. The others agreed and gave their approval too.

I excused myself for a minute to go to the bathroom. Upon coming out, a waiter in uniform handed me another cocktail, which I gladly accepted. “Thanks!” The mixture of fruity flavors was refreshing, and I took a deep sip, momentarily closing my eyes to savor the taste.

But as I attempted to navigate my way through the crowd, my balance betrayed me. I stumbled forward, my glass tipping dangerously. In my efforts to regain my footing, I collided with someone, the contents of my glass spilling like a waterfall over his jeans.

Holy fuck. Oh, shit. Oh, shit. Oh, shit!

I gasped and looked up, my heart pounding with shock and embarrassment. When I saw the short but wavy sandy hair and the intense brown eyes glaring at me, I felt my heart jump to my throat.

Daniel Hale. What a way to finally meet him!

“I”m so...so sorry,” I stammered, struggling to find my voice. My cheeks flushed a deep shade of crimson, and I wanted to disappear into thin air.

He glanced down at his soaked—and probably sticky—jeans then back at me, the tension in his jaw unmistakable. “You should watch where you’re going,” he grumbled with an expression of disbelief and irritation.

I wanted to apologize profusely, but my ability to form coherent sentences seemed to have abandoned me. Instead, I stood there flustered and tongue-tied and utterly disappointed at myself.

“Now, how the hell will I manage to get him to endorse my brand,” I muttered under my breath as I tried to compose myself again. “That wasn’t the first impression I was hoping for.”
