CHAPTER ONE #2

"Your job, Cortex," Serena said smoothly, picking up a tablet from the table, "is to analyze enemy troop movements in the northern sector, not to read the society pages. Unless Miss Ardeshir is secretly funding the insurgency, I suggest you clear your search history and get back to work."

"Yes, Ma'am," Ishaan mumbled, his ears turning red.

Vivaan couldn't help himself. "We were just saying, Major, that she’s not right for him. The team prefers... other candidates." He shot her a loaded look.

Serena’s dark eyes snapped to Vivaan. "If you have excess energy to dedicate to matchmaking, Ignition, I can arrange for you to run full-gear drills on the tarmac until you vomit. Would you like that?"

"No, Ma'am," Vivaan said quickly, looking away.

Serena turned her attention back to the tablet, pulling up the tactical data for their upcoming operation. She was a master of operational skill, matching Rudraksh beat for beat in intellect and composure. But beneath the ice, her heart beat a frantic, traitorous rhythm.

She loved him. It was an all-consuming truth that she hid behind layers of clearance codes and tactical indifference.

She loved Rudraksh Ashmehr-Vohn with a fierce, quiet desperation.

But she was a realist. Her mother’s strategic teachings and her father’s military discipline had taught her to assess a battlefield objectively.

The Ashmehr-Vohn dynasty was an impenetrable fortress of legacy.

They would never accept a woman like her—a woman with no public footprint, no political leverage, a woman who operated in the blood-soaked shadows.

Rather than let them break her heart, she kept her distance.

She built walls. Yet, she was also a master tactician.

She knew exactly how to manipulate the roster, how to pull strings with her compartmentalized clearance to ensure she was always assigned to Monarch's most critical operations.

She kept her heart safe, but she refused to step out of his orbit. It was a masochistic, losing battle.

"Attention on deck," Armaan suddenly called out.

The casual atmosphere evaporated instantly. Every member of the team stood at rigid attention as Lt. Col. Rudraksh Ashmehr-Vohn entered the command center.

He moved like a predatory cat, his dark eyes sweeping over his team before locking instantly onto Serena. For a fraction of a second, the stoic, brooding mask of the Monarch slipped, revealing a possessive, intense heat that only she was allowed to see.

"At ease," Rudraksh commanded softly.

The team relaxed, but the tension in the room ratcheted up. The chemistry between their Tactical Commander and Major Dhar was a living, breathing entity, enough to suffocate anyone standing too close.

Rudraksh walked to the head of the projection table, stopping just inches from Serena. The scent of rain and old leather clung to him, mixing with the sterile air of the base.

"Status, Cortex," Rudraksh said, though his eyes never left Serena’s face.

Ishaan swallowed hard, stepping up to the console. "Sir. We have movement near the border outpost. Intercepted comms suggest a supply drop at 0400 hours. Phantom has the satellite tracking dialed in."

"Good," Rudraksh said softly. "Relay, establish a secure line to the border command. Talon, Ignition, prep the gear. We move out at 0200."

"Yes, Sir," the team chorused, immediately scattering to their respective stations to initiate the prep protocols.

Rudraksh finally turned his full, undivided attention to Serena. "Major Dhar. A word in my office."

Serena’s posture remained flawless. "Of course, Colonel."

She followed him into the glass-enclosed office overlooking the bullpen. The moment the door clicked shut, sealing them in a soundproof bubble, the mantle of military protocol seemed to thin, leaving raw, unadulterated tension in its wake.

Rudraksh turned to face her. He didn't sit behind his desk. He leaned against the edge of it, crossing his arms over his chest, his dark eyes tracing the severe line of her jaw, the rigid set of her shoulders.

"You orchestrated your transfer to this specific op," Rudraksh stated, his voice a low hum that sent a shiver down her spine. It wasn't a question. He knew her too well.

"My analytical skills were required for the terrain," Serena replied smoothly, holding his gaze without flinching. "General Staff approved the temporary attachment."

"You pulled rank on a two-star general to get into my briefing room, Serena," he said, stepping closer. The formal titles vanished behind closed doors.

"I utilized my clearance," she corrected, her voice quiet but firm. "It is my job to ensure this team operates with the best possible field intelligence. That is what I provide."

Rudraksh stopped a breath away from her.

He was taller, forcing her to tilt her head up slightly to maintain eye contact.

"You do this every time. You maneuver yourself to my side, you stand shoulder-to-shoulder with me in the fire, and then you retreat behind your ice walls the moment the smoke clears. "

"It is a tactical necessity to maintain professional boundaries, Rudraksh," she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"Don't quote protocol at me," he warned softly, his voice dropping an octave. He reached up, his large, calloused hand hovering just an inch from her cheek. He didn't touch her, but the heat radiating from his palm felt like a brand. "I came from the estate."

Serena’s breath hitched, just a fraction, but in her world of control, it was a glaring tell. "I am aware. I heard Miss Ardeshir is visiting."

"My family adores her," Rudraksh continued, his eyes darkening, watching her closely for a reaction. "My mother is already planning the wedding. My father believes the alliance will secure our political flank for the next decade."

Serena forced her expression to remain passive, though it felt as if she were swallowing glass. "She is a very suitable match for the Ashmehr-Vohn dynasty. A delicate, perfect fit for Meherlyn House. You should be pleased."

"Stop," Rudraksh commanded, the word sharp enough to cut. His hand closed the final inch, his fingers wrapping around the nape of her neck. Serena gasped softly at the contact, the warmth of his skin short-circuiting her carefully constructed defenses.

"I don't give a damn about the Ashmehr-Vohn dynasty," Rudraksh said fiercely, his stoic facade shattering. "I don't care about alliances, or pedigree, or what my mother wants. I sat in a room full of people today, surrounded by everything I am supposed to want, and all I could think about was you."

Serena squeezed her eyes shut, her hands clenching into fists at her sides. "Rudraksh, you know how this ends. They will never accept me. I don't exist on paper. I have no family name they recognize. I am a ghost. They will destroy us."

"Let them try," he growled, pulling her a fraction closer. "I am the Tactical Commander of Army Intelligence. I hold the security of this nation in my hands. Do you really think I will let my father dictate who I love?"

"It's not just your father," Serena pleaded, her voice finally betraying a hint of the desperation she fought so hard to conceal. "It's the legacy. The expectations. I will not be a secret, Rudraksh. I will not be a shadow you visit when you tire of your perfect wife."

"You are my equal, Serena," he said, his thumb stroking the pulse point jumping wildly at her neck.

"You are the only woman who can stand in my storm and not break.

I am not marrying Mila Ardeshir. I am not marrying anyone but you.

I will dismantle the entire legacy of House Ashmehr-Vohn brick by brick if it means I get to keep you. "

Serena opened her eyes, meeting his burning gaze.

The raw vulnerability in his eyes terrified her more than any armed combatant ever could.

She was trained to disarm, to disable, to disengage.

But looking at Rudraksh, feeling the possessive weight of his hand on her neck, she knew there was no disengaging from this.

She had designed herself to be untraceable. But he had found her anyway.

"You are relentless, Monarch," she whispered.

A ghost of a smile touched his lips, transforming his harsh features into something devastatingly handsome. "I am a soldier, Blaze. And you are the only war I am willing to fight until the bitter end."

Before she could reply, a sharp knock on the glass door shattered the moment.

They sprang apart instantly, years of deeply ingrained military discipline taking over.

By the time Armaan opened the door, Serena was studying a map on the wall, her posture rigidly professional, and Rudraksh was seated behind his desk, his face an unreadable, stoic mask.

"Sir," Armaan said, glancing between the two of them, a knowing glint in his eye that he smartly kept off his face. "The chopper is fueled. We have twenty minutes to wheels up."

"Understood, Vantage," Rudraksh said, his voice devoid of the raw emotion that had bled into it just moments before. He stood up, grabbing his tactical vest.

He paused at the door, looking back at Serena. She was already moving toward the exit, her mind seamlessly transitioning back to the mission, prioritizing threats, reading the operational layout.

"Major Dhar," Rudraksh called out softly.

She paused, looking over her shoulder. "Yes, Colonel?"

"Stay close on this one," he said. It sounded like an order. To everyone else, it was an order.

But Serena heard the vow hidden beneath the syllables. She offered him a crisp, formal nod, though the ghost of a defiant, answering fire danced in her dark eyes.

"Always, Sir."
