CHAPTER TEN #3
Serena’s hands paused for a fraction of a second before resuming their gentle, methodical massage. "Major General."
"Yes," Rudraksh grunted, picking up his whiskey and taking a slow sip.
He hated the idea. He was the Tactical Commander. He was a Monarch who belonged in the mud, in the freezing rain of the Himalayas, in the suffocating heat of the jungle with his men. He thrived on the adrenaline, on the immediate, tangible reality of kinetic warfare and intelligence extraction.
A promotion to Major General meant a desk. It meant shifting from tactical execution to strategic bureaucracy. It meant endless meetings with politicians, budget approvals, and navigating the treacherous, smiling waters of high-command politics.
But it wasn't just his own career trajectory that tied his stomach in knots.
Rudraksh reached up, his large hand wrapping over Serena’s wrist, stopping her movements. He pulled her gently around the chair until she was standing between his parted knees. He looked up at her, his dark eyes vulnerable and exposed.
"Serena," Rudraksh murmured, his voice thick with a quiet dread. "If I take this star... it changes everything. Not just for me. For you."
Serena looked down at him, her dark, analytical eyes perfectly calm. "I am aware of what a general’s star entails, Rudraksh."
"Do you?" he asked, his grip tightening slightly on her hips.
"It means you become the wife of a Major General.
It means you will be expected to host the welfare associations.
You will have to sit through high teas with the other army wives, dealing with their hierarchy, their gossip, their relentless social protocols.
You hate that world, Blaze. You loathe the social theater.
I promised you a sanctuary, not a cage."
He rested his forehead against her stomach, a humbling guilt washing over him.
He loved her too much to drag her out of the shadows where she thrived and force her into the suffocating daylight of military bureaucracy.
"I'm going to decline it. I will stay a Colonel. I belong in the trenches anyway."
Serena stared down at the dark hair of the most powerful man in the military, disarmed by the depth of his devotion. He was willing to stall his entire legendary career, to throw away a general’s star, simply to protect her from afternoon tea parties.
She reached down, her hands cupping his face, forcing him to look up at her.
"Rudraksh Ashmehr-Vohn," Serena said, her voice dropping to a fierce, unwavering cadence. "You are not declining anything."
Rudraksh frowned, his brow furrowing. "Serena—"
"Listen to me," she commanded softly, her thumbs sweeping over his cheekbones.
"You belong in the trenches, yes. But the army needs you at the top. You have the tactical brilliance to shape the future of this country’s defense.
You can protect thousands of men from behind that desk by ensuring the intelligence and the logistics are flawless.
You are a Monarch. You are meant to rule. "
"And what about you?" Rudraksh challenged, his voice rough with emotion. "What about the teas? The wives?"
Serena offered him a slow, devastatingly sharp smile—the smile of an apex predator that had just mapped the battlefield and found the high ground.
"I am a Tactical Intelligence officer," Serena murmured, leaning down so her face was inches from his. "I read behavioral patterns and dismantle hostile environments for a living. If you think a room full of army wives is going to break me, you are severely underestimating your fiancée."
Rudraksh stared at her, his breath hitching.
"I will host the teas, Rudraksh," Serena promised, her dark eyes blazing with an unyielding, fierce loyalty.
"I will navigate the social hierarchy, and I will likely terrify the entire welfare association into, highly efficient submission.
I will stand by your side in the daylight, just as I stand with you in the dark. Take the promotion."
Rudraksh was silenced. The overwhelming magnitude of her support washed over him, disarming his fears. She wasn't just willing to endure it; she was willing to conquer it for him.
He was humbled to his very core.
A ragged, emotional breath escaped his lips. He wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, pulling her down into his lap. Serena straddled his thighs effortlessly, her hands sliding into the hair at the nape of his neck.
"I don't deserve you," Rudraksh whispered fiercely, burying his face in the crook of her neck, inhaling the intoxicating scent of her skin. "I am profoundly, irrevocably in love with you."
"I know," Serena smiled softly, pressing a kiss to the muscle of his shoulder. "And I love you. Now, sign the brass paperwork, General. We have a wedding to survive first."
Rudraksh lifted his head, a devastatingly affectionate, hopelessly devoted smile breaking across his harsh features. He captured her lips in a deep, consuming kiss, knowing with certainty that with this woman by his side, there wasn't a war or a drawing room in the world they couldn't conquer.
