89. Cassandra Fairview

My monster’s low, reptilian growl rattled my bones as I slipped out of the car. Vox jerked his head at me, and I followed him toward the trunk of his car.

Inside, there was a large black duffel, full of everything we needed to subdue and kidnap the reverend.

Vox pulled out two Kevlar vests and silently handed me one before digging through the bag to produce a couple of silencers and an adjustable nylon shoulder holster for my Beretta.

Silently, we geared up, and I spun the silencer on my weapon as Vox stuffed the pockets of his tactical pants with a roll of duct tape and a small brown bottle of what I assumed was chloroform.

How he was able to source shit like chloroform was beyond me, and I didn’t really care to ask.

All I cared about was the fact that he’d also sourced some of the more… niche items I’d requested.

I’d never tortured anyone before. But, if I was going to do it, I was going to do it fucking right.

I smirked at the items we were leaving behind as Vox quietly shut the trunk.

We wouldn’t need those until later.

First, I needed to get the reverend back to Fairview.

And I was going to murder every single fucking man in this building on my way to collect him.

I’d been on the fence about whether or not I wanted to give in to my monster on this mission.

My beef was with the reverend, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about killing innocent people on my way to my final prize.

But after seeing with my own eyes that there were no innocent men involved in the reverend’s operation, all bets were off.

Vox approached the unmarked steel door set into the back of the building. This would be our entry point, and I watched quietly as Vox made quick work of the lock before turning back to me.

He raised his eyebrows as if to say ‘Ready?’ and I nodded.

As Vox opened the door to the church, I opened a very different door.

It was a door I’d kept firmly locked since the day I killed my mother.

‘All of them?’ my monster growled as it stepped out of the shadows of its cage.

‘All of them… except for the reverend. He belongs to Theo.’

My monster smiled, its many rows of razor-sharp teeth glistening in my mind’s eye.

With my monster free and the taste of revenge on my tongue, I clicked off the safety on my gun.

“Let’s go,” I murmured as I moved past Vox, stepping fearlessly into the mouth of hell.

Vox didn’t answer, but he followed me like a lethal shadow, and the door sealed shut behind us.
