The Moon Queen's Prophecy

The Moon Queen's Prophecy

By Aria Blackwood

CHAPTER ONE

The Girl Beneath the Silver Moon

"Every five hundred years, the moon chooses a soul. The chosen never knows the cost until destiny begins to whisper."

The Kingdom of Lunaris had feared the full moon for longer than anyone could remember.

Children were taught never to look directly at it.

Old women closed their windows before moonrise.

Even soldiers—men who had faced wars and monsters without trembling—lowered their eyes whenever the silver moon climbed above the mountains.

Because the moon did not simply shine.

It watched.

And every five hundred years...

It chose.

Far beyond the marble walls of the capital, hidden between endless forests and rolling hills, stood a quiet village untouched by royal politics.

It was called Ashgrove.

A place where mornings smelled of fresh bread, evenings echoed with laughter, and the greatest worry was whether the winter harvest would survive another storm.

Or at least...

That was what everyone believed.

A cold wind swept across the meadow outside the village.

Tall silver grass bent beneath it like waves upon an unseen sea.

Standing in the middle of the field was a young woman with long midnight-black hair flowing behind her.

She stood perfectly still.

Watching the moon.

Her name was Lyra.

And unlike everyone else...

She had never been afraid of it.

"You'll catch a cold standing out here."

The familiar voice made Lyra smile before she even turned around.

Her younger brother, Finn, approached carrying a wool blanket over one shoulder.

"You always find me."

"You always disappear."

He wrapped the blanket around her shoulders with an exaggerated sigh.

"I swear one day Mother is going to lock every door before sunset."

Lyra laughed softly.

"She has tried."

"And?"

"I climbed out of the window."

Finn groaned.

"I knew it."

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

They simply watched the enormous silver moon hanging above the valley.

It looked impossibly close tonight.

Almost alive.

Finn frowned.

"Do you ever think..."

Lyra glanced at him.

"...that the moon is staring back?"

She smiled.

"I think you're reading too many old legends."

"Maybe."

He kicked a pebble across the grass.

"But Grandmother always said the moon remembers names."

Lyra laughed again.

"And Grandmother also believed chickens could predict earthquakes."

"They predicted one."

"After it happened."

Finn opened his mouth to argue.

Instead, both of them froze.

The wind had stopped.

Completely.

Not a single blade of grass moved.

Not a single insect sang.

The entire meadow fell into a silence so unnatural that even breathing suddenly felt too loud.

Finn looked around uneasily.

"Lyra..."

She didn't answer.

Because something had changed.

The moonlight.

It was brighter.

Far brighter than it should have been.

Silver light spilled across the meadow.

Not like ordinary moonlight.

Like liquid.

Flowing toward them.

"No..."

Finn whispered.

"Run."

But Lyra couldn't move.

The silver light circled her feet.

Then slowly...

Began climbing.

Around her ankles.

Her hands.

Her hair.

She looked as though she were standing inside a river made of stars.

"Lyra!"

Finn rushed forward.

The instant he touched the glowing light—

He was thrown backward.

His body hit the grass several meters away.

"Finn!"

Lyra tried to reach him.

She couldn't.

The light held her in place.

Above them...

The moon pulsed.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Each pulse echoed through the valley like the heartbeat of something unimaginably ancient.

The villagers began pouring from their homes.

Voices rose in confusion.

People pointed toward the meadow.

"What is happening?"

"Look!"

"The moon..."

"It's choosing!"

An old woman fell to her knees.

"No..."

Her voice trembled.

"Not again."

The silver light suddenly exploded upward.

A pillar of moonlight pierced the night sky.

Visible for miles.

Far beyond Ashgrove.

Far beyond Lunaris.

Even beyond the frozen mountains.

Inside the royal palace...

Every candle went out.

The throne room plunged into darkness.

Then...

A silver bell rang.

Once.

A sound no living person had heard before.

An elderly man in white robes slowly lifted his head.

His hands began shaking.

"It cannot be..."

He hurried toward the palace balcony.

The king was already there.

Watching the distant pillar of silver light rising into the heavens.

For a long time...

Neither man spoke.

Finally, the king whispered,

"Tell me I'm imagining this."

The old man swallowed.

"I wish I could."

The king's jaw tightened.

"The prophecy..."

The old man closed his eyes.

"It has begun."

Hundreds of miles away...

Beyond the borders of Lunaris...

Beyond the Black Mountains where no human dared travel...

A castle carved entirely from black stone stood beneath eternal darkness.

Its towers touched the clouds.

Its gates had remained closed for centuries.

Deep beneath the castle...

Chains rattled.

A young man slowly opened his eyes.

His hair was as dark as midnight.

His eyes...

A piercing silver unlike any human's.

He had been asleep.

Or perhaps waiting.

The moonlight slipping through the cracks in the stone reached his face.

He looked upward.

For the first time in years...

He smiled.

"So..."

His voice echoed through the chamber.

"You finally found her."

The iron chains around his wrists shattered without anyone touching them.

One by one.

They fell to the floor.

The guards outside the chamber heard the sound.

Panic spread instantly.

"The prince is awake!"

"Seal the gates!"

"Summon the High Council!"

But it was already too late.

The young man stepped out of the shadows.

Calm.

Elegant.

Dangerous.

Every guard instinctively lowered their weapons.

Not because they had been ordered to.

Because something inside them knew...

No weapon forged by humans could stop him.

He walked toward the castle doors without looking at anyone.

One frightened soldier finally found the courage to speak.

"My prince..."

The young man paused.

"The prophecy has begun."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"I know."

He looked toward the silver moon hanging above the world.

Then quietly whispered,

"Don't let them find her before I do."

Back in Ashgrove...

The pillar of moonlight vanished as suddenly as it had appeared.

Silence returned.

Lyra collapsed onto the grass.

Breathing heavily.

Finn rushed to her side.

"Lyra!"

"I'm okay..."

But even as she said the words...

A sharp pain burned across her left wrist.

She looked down.

A glowing silver crescent moon had appeared on her skin.

Perfectly etched.

As though it had always belonged there.

Finn's face turned pale.

"What... is that?"

Before Lyra could answer...

A shadow passed across the moon.

Not a cloud.

Not a bird.

Something far larger.

Something with wings.

Ancient.

Powerful.

Watching.

It disappeared before anyone else noticed.

But high above the clouds...

A deep, thunder-like roar echoed across the night sky.

Not loud enough for humans to understand.

But loud enough for every sleeping dragon in the world...

To open one eye.
