Epilogue
Morgan was sprawled out in the recliner with her scratching stick stuck down into her walking cast when she heard a knock at the door. “Come in, door’s open.” She’d been trying to itch that same spot all afternoon, no way was she moving now.
“Hey sis, how the heck are you?”
“Tyler, hi!” Two months had passed since Morgan’s crazy release and abduction from the hospital.
Margie was behind bars at the women’s correctional facility on the other side of the state.
They’d had no problem throwing the book at her for attempted kidnapping, possession of an illegal weapon with no permit or something like that and a few other charges she didn’t know much about.
Her brother had gone back to work and Luke made fast work of moving all of Morgan’s things into his house for her long recovery process. The hospital arranged to have a nurse come out every other day to work on her therapy.
“So, what’s this I hear you quit your job?”
“Say what?” Luke appeared in the kitchen doorway. “What do you just say?” He looked from Tyler to Morgan, questioning what he’d just heard.
Morgan threw a ‘thanks a lot’ look at Tyler who shrugged his apology, then she turned to Luke who was waiting for an explanation.
“What does he mean you quit your job?”
“Well…just that. I quit my job.” Barely able to contain her excitement, she had a hard time looking Luke in the eye.
“So…what does that mean? You quit your job to do what?”
Good lord, do I really have to explain every detail?
She took a deep breath and held it for a moment.
“I quit my job in Colorado so I could stay in Holly with my family.” He looked at her with a wrinkled forehead and creased eyebrows.
“And you, ok? I quit my job because I want to stay in Holly with you.” She exhaled heavily, her fingers rubbing faded spots on her jeans.
“Really?” When she looked up at Luke, he was dumb-struck. Speechless.
She shook her head, stood and hobbled to his side, bringing him back to the couch. Tyler plopped into the recliner she’d given up and grabbed the TV remote.
“Yes, really. Tyler, shut that off, I’m trying to talk here.” He muted the game he’d found on ESPN then put the control on the table.
“Thank you. Now, since you’re both listening, I only have to say this once. I have had a few impromptu calls and an interview with the Holly Search and Rescue and they’ve offered me a position on their team. ”
“Seriously? Did you say yes? Are you staying permanently?”
“Hey that’s awesome sis, congrats.” Tyler was so nonchalant with everything, just assuming she’d said yes.
“Morgan, did you say yes?” Luke was alert and staring intently, waiting for her answer. “Are you ignoring me woman?”
She touched his hand and smiled.
“I said yes.”
