Epilogue – Brewer

Seventeen Years Later

“It’s just a few friends getting together at Melody’s house.” Our fifteen-year-old daughter, Klaire, pouts. “We’re going to play truth or dare—everyone does.”

The memories of Josie and me playing truth or dare all those years ago pop into my head as they do every day since that day, replacing all the negative memories I had before I met Josie.

“Nope, absolutely not.” Josie is the first to speak out of the two of us.

Klaire is our second-oldest, behind Max, our sixteen-year-old son. She’s headstrong, especially when she has her mind set on something.

“I’ll be there with her. I’ll make sure nothing happens.” At six feet four inches, Max is already as tall as I am. I don’t doubt anyone will mess with him, but I still worry about them.

“As long as you’re there to keep an eye on her, it will be fine.” I give Josie’s thigh a quick squeeze under the table, silently reminding her that we need to let them grow up someday.

“Fine.” Josie glares at me, as stubborn as ever. “Maybe find a different game to play.”

“Melody has Twister. Maybe we can talk her into playing that.” Max grabs the keys to his truck from the hook by the door.

“How about Uno or Go Fish?” Josie calls after them as they close the door behind them, leaving us alone for the night because the younger kids are staying with Aspen and Wilder.

“How about a little game of Truth or Dare of our own?” I nuzzle Josie’s neck.

“Truth.” She answers immediately.

“Do you love me?”

“That’s a stupid truth,” she mutters under her breath. “Of course, I love you.”

“I love you, too, Josie, but how about a dare? Love me forever.” I say.

“That’s an easy one—I already do.”
