Chapter 60

SIXTY

‘Which makes you think what?’ Matt asked, reaching into the fridge for a beer.

‘Well – it did cross my mind that Rosemary herself might have killed her,’ Kate admitted.

‘I mean, she’s definitely tough enough – look at the way she dispatched that duck.

And the coroner’s officer is asking all these questions about Paul’s death.

He says he’s just being careful and considering the options, but something seems to have made him suspicious. ’

‘So your new friend might be a geriatric serial killer?’ Matt said, amused. ‘It seems a bit unlikely, though. And, anyway, why would she kill this au pair?’

Kate shrugged. ‘To protect Jamie’s glittering future, maybe?

He was just about to go off to Oxford, after all – to become a champion rower like his father, and make all the connections that landed him a stellar career in international finance.

Or, at least, the appearance of it. Everything has to look as if it’s perfect: the perfect childhood, in this, the perfect setting; the perfect hosts; successful, high-flying kids .

. . Back then, a baby with Martina might have seemed like a terrible encumbrance for her golden boy to start his adult life with.

And, although Rosemary claimed she felt sorry for Martina, she sounded pretty unsympathetic about her pregnancy. ’

‘OK. But you’re doing exactly what you promised not to do,’ Matt said gently. ‘Trying to solve the mystery yourself. Leave it to the police, yes? We’ve got enough on our plates.’
