SIXTY-EIGHT

When Rosemary came out, she was clutching a piece of paper and smiling. Kate waited until they were in the car park before asking. ‘Well?’

‘I’m forgetful, but there are absolutely no clinical signs of dementia,’ Rosemary said proudly. She held up the piece of paper. ‘She’s going to put it in a letter, so it’s all official, but this is the test she got me to do.’

‘May I?’ Kate took a photo of it on her phone. ‘I’ll get this to our lawyer.’ She hesitated. ‘That’s if you’re still sure you want me to. Jamie’s going to go ballistic when he hears.’

‘It’s got to be done,’ Rosemary said simply. ‘I should have stood up to him years ago. But it’s never too late, is it?’
