Chapter 21

Julian

Nora kept one hand on the open door.

“I may change my mind at any point,” she said. “Even if I’m the one who asks for something.”

“I understand.”

She searched my face, then stepped back far enough to let me enter.

She locked the door and faced me. Her apartment was quiet without Sophie in it. A lamp burned beside the couch. Two glasses of water waited on the coffee table, and the closed bedroom door stood at the end of the short hall.

I had brought condoms in my coat pocket. Nothing else.

“Come here,” she said.

I went to her.

Nora put both hands on my face and kissed me. There was no careful first contact this time. Her mouth opened under mine, and when I touched her waist, she drew me against her.

Her hands slid beneath my coat and pushed it from my shoulders. I let it fall, then moved my palms under her shirt and up the warm line of her back. She lifted her arms. The cuff caught around one wrist, trapping her for half a second before she pulled free and tossed the shirt toward the couch.

Her bra was plain black, the kind she used to call practical when I could no longer form a useful sentence at the sight of it.

“Beautiful,” I said.

“Don’t make this reverent.”

“I’m trying to remember how to breathe.”

Her mouth curved. “You don’t get to lose it.”

“No.”

She covered my hand with hers and drew it over her breast. Her nipple tightened beneath the fabric as my thumb moved across it.

Nora reached behind herself and released the clasp. The bra fell between us.

Want hit me hard enough to make my next breath audible. Her breasts were fuller than I remembered, her stomach softer below them. Faint silver lines curved along her lower stomach.

My gaze caught there. Nora caught my wrist and moved my hand to her bare breast.

“You can look,” she said. “I need you to stop looking sorry.”

I met her eyes. She pulled my head down.

I bent and closed my lips around her nipple.

Her fingers tightened in my hair. I used my tongue until she pulled me closer, then sucked harder. Her hips moved against mine. The contact through our clothes stripped years out of my memory, but the woman holding me in her apartment was not the wife I could reach for from habit.

Nora made a low, impatient sound and tugged at my shirt. I straightened long enough to take it off.

Her gaze moved over my chest and stopped at my belt. “Bedroom.”

I followed her down the hall.

She turned on the lamp beside her bed. The room held one nightstand, one stack of books, and the wide mattress where she had learned to sleep in the middle. Nora sat on the edge and pulled me between her knees.

She unfastened my belt, opened my pants, and closed her hand around me through my briefs.

I gripped the bedspread. “Nora.”

She stroked me once, watching what the movement did to my face, then pushed my pants down my hips.

I stood and removed the rest of my clothes. When I started toward the hall for the condoms, Nora caught my wrist.

“Not yet.”

She lay back and opened the button of her jeans. “Your mouth first.”

I pulled her jeans down her legs and set them aside. Her underwear followed when she lifted her hips.

She was wet. The sight of her open to me nearly ended every disciplined thought I had brought through the door. Nora crooked one finger at me.

I knelt between her thighs.

Nora guided my head with one hand. I began with the slow stroke she had once liked. Her hips shifted away, then angled toward me differently.

“A little higher.”

I adjusted.

“There.”

Her heel pressed into the back of my shoulder. I held her hips without pinning them and worked my tongue over her clit until her breathing broke around my name. My fingers slid inside her, and the rhythm of her hips told me when she wanted more.

Her body tightened around my fingers. I kept my mouth where she had placed it. She came with one hand twisted in the sheet and the other holding me against her, her voice sharp in the quiet room.

When her grip loosened, she pulled me up by the shoulders. I moved over her but kept my weight on my arms. Nora ran her hands down my back, then took my face and kissed me, tasting herself on my mouth.

“I want you inside me.”

I crossed to the entry, took two condoms from my coat pocket, and returned. Nora watched me set the spare on the nightstand and open the first. When it was on, I moved between her legs.

Nora wrapped one hand around me and guided me to her. “Slow.”

I entered her an inch at a time.

The first tight pressure drew a sound from both of us. I stopped when I was fully inside her.

“Okay?” I asked.

“Wait.”

I stayed still.

Her eyes closed. The hand on my shoulder flattened, holding distance between us rather than pulling me close.

Rain tapped the bedroom window.

I heard it then. A light summer shower against the glass, nothing like the storm the night Sophie was born. Nora’s face had changed anyway.

“Stop,” she said.

I withdrew and moved back onto my knees.

Nora turned onto her side, drawing one leg up. I did not touch her. I did not tell her where we were or promise that she was safe, as if my saying it could make it true.

The rain lasted less than a minute. Cars moved on the wet street below us.

Nora opened her eyes.

“I remembered asking you to wait until the contraction ended,” she said. “You were standing by the bed with your keys.”

I knew the moment. I had waited long enough for her to breathe and then used the pause to leave.

“I remember,” I said.

She looked at the space between us. “I’m here.”

“Yes.”

“And you stopped.”

“Yes.”

Nora took my hand and pressed it to the outside of her thigh. “I want to continue.”

She looked directly at me. “Slower than before.”

I discarded the first condom and opened the spare. Then I lay back.

Nora moved over me and guided my cock to her. She lowered herself partway, stopped, and shifted one knee until the angle changed. Then she took the rest of me at her own pace, her hands braced against my chest.

When she began to move, I held her waist.

“Like that,” she said.

She set the rhythm. I followed it. She took me deeper with each stroke, her hands braced on my chest and her pace still hers. Desire narrowed my vision to her breasts above me, the pressure of her around me, the open concentration on her face.

She took my hand from her waist and moved my thumb between us. I matched the slow circle she made once with her fingers.

Her movements lost their even rhythm. I could feel my own control thinning, but I held the pace until she came again, her body closing hard around me.

Nora folded over me, kissed me, and caught my shoulder. I rolled with her until I was above her. She hooked one leg around my hip and pulled me deeper.

“Now,” she said against my mouth.

My next thrust lost the careful shape of everything that had come before. Nora met it, one hand at the back of my neck and the other gripping my arm. I watched her face until the release went through me, then buried my mouth against hers with her body still moving beneath mine.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

I disposed of the condom and returned to the bed. Nora had shifted toward the middle, leaving room beside her.

Nora reached across the sheet and linked our fingers.

“Stay until morning.”

“All right.”

She turned off the lamp.

In the morning, I dressed, took my coat, and left with everything I had brought. Nora kissed me once at the door. At five that afternoon, I returned for my scheduled parenting time with Sophie’s navy bag over my shoulder.

Nora and I called ourselves exclusive. We kept our homes.

Over the following weeks, we learned how to have a relationship that did not borrow its structure from our daughter.

We went to a terrible outdoor movie and left halfway through because Nora said the book was better.

She spent one Friday evening at my apartment while I cooked, then went home because she wanted her own bed.

I attended the last presentation for her summer course.

She came to an open house at one of my finished projects and asked why every new office had a chair no one could sit in comfortably.

When I canceled dinner because of a deadline, she said, “I need you to tell me before I arrange childcare, not after.”

I apologized, changed the way I scheduled those nights, and did not send an expensive meal to turn the mistake into romance.

When she was quiet through breakfast one Sunday, I asked whether she wanted company or space.

“Company,” she said. “But stop trying to improve my mood.”

So I sat with her and drank bad coffee.

We had sex in both apartments. We also spent nights together when neither of us wanted sex. Nora said what she wanted sooner. I learned that an answer could be complete before I understood every reason behind it.

Sophie’s first birthday gathering fit around Nora’s table. Rachel brought the cake. My parents and brother came for one hour. No group chat was invited, and no one arrived with a photographer, a banner, or a plan Nora had not approved.

Sophie wore more frosting than she ate. She slapped both hands onto the tray of her high chair while Rachel took pictures. My mother laughed and asked for one with the three of us.

Nora looked at me before she answered.

“One,” she said.

We stood behind Sophie’s chair. I kept one hand on the back rather than around Nora’s waist. Rachel took the picture.

My mother checked the screen. “Can we get one by the window? The light is better.”

My brother began stacking plates. “And we could stay for gifts. We still have forty minutes.”

Rain struck the glass behind us.

Nora went still.

No one else appeared to notice. Sophie was pulling at the elastic of her paper hat. My father was explaining how quickly the shower would pass.

Nora looked at me.

“I need to leave now.”

I picked up the diaper bag.

“We’re ending early,” I said. “Thank you for coming.”

My mother lowered the phone. “We can clear out if Nora needs a few minutes.”

“No. We’re leaving.”

I removed Sophie’s hat, wiped the frosting from her hands, and lifted her from the high chair. Nora was already reaching for her coat.

“Julian,” my father said. “You can take a minute. We aren’t in a rush.”

“We are.” I looked at Rachel. “Can you lock up?”

She nodded. “Go.”

I did not ask Nora whether the need was bad enough to disappoint them. I did not explain her in front of them. Two minutes after she spoke, we were in the elevator with Sophie against my chest and the bag over my shoulder.

“Where?” I asked.

“Your apartment.”

We went there.

At home, I changed Sophie out of her stained dress while Nora stood near the living room window. I put our daughter down for her nap, closed the bedroom door, and found Nora sitting at the far end of the couch.

I sat in the chair across from her.

After several minutes, she said, “It was the rain. And your mother asking for another picture.”

I waited.

“Rachel took pictures at the hospital because I asked her to. Your family wanted them afterward. Proof Sophie was fine. Proof they still had a granddaughter.” Nora looked down at her empty hands.

“Today your mother didn’t do anything wrong.

She asked. I could have said no. But for one second I was back there, and everyone wanted something from the day except me. ”

“The anniversary still has weight,” I said. “Dating me again doesn’t remove it.”

“No.”

Weeks passed. The birthday picture stayed private. Our calendars filled with work, parenting time, dinners, and ordinary disagreements that ended without threats to the relationship.

One night after we washed two plates in Nora’s kitchen, I dried my hands and set the towel down.

“There’s something I want you to know,” I said.

She leaned against the counter. “Okay.”

I had no ring. Sophie was asleep at my apartment with my brother. No one waited for an announcement.

“I want to be your husband again someday,” I said. “But you don’t need to marry me to prove that my change has value. If you choose to keep dating me and keep your own home, I will accept that.”

Nora said nothing.

“I can’t promise there will never be another crisis,” I continued. “I can promise I won’t treat your voice like evidence that has to be verified before I respond.”

Her gaze held mine.

“Don’t ask again,” she said. “When I decide, I’ll tell you.”

“All right.”

I picked up the dish towel because the pan still needed drying.

We discussed Saturday’s childcare and whether the grocery store near me carried the yogurt Sophie would actually eat. I left at ten, kissed Nora at her door, and went home alone.

I did not ask again.

Several weeks later, a private message from Nora appeared while I was at work.

It contained nothing about Sophie.

Tomorrow at ten. Meet me at the clerk’s office. We’re not signing divorce papers.
