Chapter 22 #2
We hover at the edge of the destruction, observing the sheer scale of Mira's final act.
The rock ceiling has completely collapsed, burying the glowing green jars and their horrific contents beneath tons of stone.
A cloud of white dust still settles over the rubble, a ghostly shroud over the grave.
The water itself feels lighter without her parasitic presence, as though some ancient weight has finally been lifted from the Silt District.
We watch the rubble in respectful silence, the magnitude of what Mira has accomplished settling over us.
Vaelis finally turns away from the tomb, his hand finding mine in the gloom. His touch is steady, an anchor in the shifting waters.
"There is something I want to show you, too," he says, his voice softening, becoming serious. "Before we head south."
Vaelis guides me away from Oona's tomb, his hand still clasped in mine. The connection between us remains unbroken as we navigate the labyrinth of discarded treasures and skeletal coral.
We arrive at a monolith of obsidian rock. It stands stark and absolute against the gloom.
A jagged fissure splits the stone, a dark wound in the face of the world.
The sight of it sends a jolt through me. This is it. The place where our paths first crossed. The narrow crack in reality where a Red Prince of the Reef offered me his name, and with it, his trust.
Without hesitation, Vaelis slips into the narrow opening. I follow, my larger frame scraping against the rock walls as they constrict around us, creating a pocket of intimacy in the crushing dark. The water here is different—still, clean, and silent, a sanctuary from the chaos of the Silt.
Vaelis pauses, turning to face me. The teasing glint in his golden eyes has vanished, replaced by something raw and unguarded. He looks stripped bare.
"Before that night," he begins, his voice barely above a whisper, the tremor in it audible despite the water that carries it. "Before I followed you into this darkness, I was drowning, Kael."
He looks down to his hands, long-fingered and elegant, now dark with grease and stained by our journey.
"I was always drawn to the forbidden," he confesses, the words heavy with memory.
"I hoarded human trinkets in secret rooms. The tarnished pocket watches that no longer ticked.
The silver forks bent out of shape. The shards of colored glass that caught what little light penetrated the gloom.
I obsessed over their strange beauty, their uselessness.
I was starving for something real, something that wasn't the suffocating perfection of my life in the Reef. "
He lifts his head, and his golden eyes find mine in the dimness, pinning me in place with their intensity.
"I thought escape would never find me," Vaelis continues, his voice growing tighter. "The Council had mapped out my entire existence. The breeding mandates. The Vanguard command. The meaningless title of Red Prince."
He closes the distance between us until his chest brushes against mine, the contact sending a shiver through both our bodies.
"There were times," he admits, a flush of shame darkening his cheeks, "when I dreamt of seeking out the Trench Witch myself.
I imagined begging her for a potion to transform me into a human.
I wanted legs. I wanted to crawl onto the dry shore and leave this entire ocean behind forever. I wanted to disappear completely."
The raw honesty of his confession strikes me.
"But I never went to the witch," Vaelis says, his voice heavy with emotion. He reaches up, cupping my face with both his hands, his touch impossibly gentle. "I found you instead."
His thumbs stroke the rough skin of my jaw, tracing the contours of my face.
"The night I met you in this very fissure," Vaelis whispers, his voice breaking slightly. "That was the night the sea kept me."
My heart hammers against my ribs, a frantic rhythm that vibrates through my entire body. The weight of his confession settles deep in my bones, a truth that reshapes everything. He didn't wander into darkness—he chose it. He chose the monster.
He chose me.
My arms encircle his waist, pulling him flush against my solid frame.
I bury my face in the crook of his neck, breathing in the scent of his skin, a mixture of salt and something uniquely Vaelis.
The water stills around us, the world outside the rock walls ceasing to exist as we cling to each other in this sanctuary.
I pull back enough to see his face in the dimness, my eyes dropping to his lips.
"You’re mine," I rumble, the possessive words vibrating through the water between us, bouncing off the stone and settling deep in his chest.
"Yours," Vaelis agrees, his breath catching on the single word.
I guide him deeper into the narrow fissure, the rock walls constricting until they enclose us completely. The darkness is absolute, but my body knows his, memorized in the time we've spent together.
I push him back against the smooth stone, and he goes willingly, his spine arching as he hits the wall with a soft thud.
I crush my mouth against his.
This kiss a collision. I taste the salt of his tears mingled with the frantic heat of his desire.
My rough tongue sweeps into his mouth, claiming the space, demanding his complete surrender.
Vaelis groans into the kiss, opening wider for me.
His hands tangle deep into my wet hair, anchoring my face to his.
I break the kiss only to drag my open mouth down his strong jaw. I drag my teeth across the pulse point at the base of his throat, not hard enough to break skin, but with enough pressure to make him gasp, his head falling back against the rock.
Then I use my voice.
I drop the pitch low, humming directly against his skin. The heavy acoustic resonance transfers seamlessly from my vocal cords into his flesh. The water between us heats instantly, steam rising in the cold depths.
Vaelis shudders violently. His long tail curls tight around my gray one, our fins tangling together in the dark.
"Kael," he begs.
My hands travel down his chest, my rough, scarred palms scraping against his smooth skin. The contrast of our textures is intoxicating—his perfection against my monstrosity. I trace the sharp lines of his ribs, grip his narrow waist, my fingers digging into his sides.
I kiss a path down his stomach, humming with every press of my lips.
The vibration is a physical weapon of pure pleasure. Vaelis thrashes against the rock wall, his fins snapping open, rigid and trembling in the dark water.
My rough hands continue their downward journey, tracing the elegant curve where his torso meets his powerful tail.
The texture of his scales changes here, becoming finer, more delicate.
With infinite care, I spread his ventral fins wide, exposing the sensitive slit beneath to the cool water of our sanctuary.
I press my face close against the tender tail, feeling the frantic pulse of his blood beneath my lips. I speak a single, heavy word directly against his most vulnerable place, the syllable vibrating through water and scale.
"Beautiful," I growl, the possessive claim resonating through his entire frame.
The acoustic shockwave strikes with devastating precision.
Vaelis's back arches violently against the stone wall, a groan tearing from his throat.
The sound ricochets in the confined space, sharp and piercing.
His fingers claw desperately at my broad shoulders, nails scrabbling for grip against my tough skin, leaving pale half-moons that quickly fade.
My rough tongue joins, tracing the edges of his now exposed slit while I continue to hum those deep, heavy notes against him.
I lap at his slick heat, now hard and protruding heavily from its protective sheath.
Each rumble of approval sends another tremor through his body.
I play his nerves like an instrument, mastering each response, drawing out each shudder and gasp.
My sun shatters in the dark.
His climax hits him like a tidal wave, tearing a loud, unrestrained sob from his lips. His entire body convulses, tail thrashing against the stone walls, sending small pebbles raining down around us. Then he slumps forward, all strength gone, his weight sagging against me.
I catch him immediately, sliding my arms around his back, holding him securely against my chest. He pants, his cheek resting against my collarbone, the rapid rhythm of his breathing a counterpoint to the steady beating of my heart.
But I give him no time to recover. The primal need inside me roars for total completion, for the absolute claiming of what belongs to me.
I lift him higher against the stone wall, positioning his limp form. The movement is fluid, effortless. I align our bodies, my tail providing the leverage needed.
"Wrap," I command, my voice like gravel from the deepest trenches.
Vaelis obeys instantly, even in his exhausted state. His crimson tail coils tight around my waist, the scales sliding against mine in a delicious friction. He locks his fins behind my back, anchoring himself completely to my solid mass.
My fingers trace the delicate seam where his scales give way to softer flesh, testing the resistance. I find his entrance and press my thumb gently against it.
Vaelis gasps, his body tensing momentarily before relaxing into my touch.
I work my thumb in small circles, coaxing the tight ring to yield.
When he's sufficiently prepared, I add a second finger, stretching him carefully to make sure he's ready.
His breath hitches with each careful movement, but he doesn't protest, only wraps his tail tighter around me in silent encouragement.
I press forward, entering him in one slow, deliberate stretch.
Vaelis gasps sharply, the sound catching in his throat.
His nails bite deeper into my shoulders, a counterpoint to the overwhelming pressure. He tilts his head back, his golden eyes wide and blown completely black in the shadows that surround us. I’m filling every empty space inside him, stretching him to his limits.
I freeze my movements, giving him time to adjust. I watch his face intently, reading the shift in his expression, the sharp pinch of pain gradually transforming into a deep, overwhelming bloom of pleasure. His body begins to soften around me.
"Take me," Vaelis chokes out, his hips twitching against mine in a desperate plea.
I oblige him.
I pull back, the drag of my roughened skin against his sensitive ridges sending sparks through my own nerves, then thrust deep. The water around us grows warmer with each connection, our bodies creating heat in the cold depths.
I establish a brutal, heavy rhythm.
With every powerful forward thrust, I use my voice.
The deep vibration travels through my driving hips directly into his core. I take him with heavy sound, claiming him with every sense.
"Louder," Vaelis demands, his voice wrecking in the water. He bucks against me, meeting my heavy thrusts with desperate force, seeking more of what only I can give him.
A grin splits my face in the dark. I bare my jagged teeth, feeling wild and possessive.
I pick up the pace, our bodies slick against each other. I fuck him with a fierce, possessive intensity. I hold his hips perfectly steady with my large hands, anchoring him safely to my storm. The contrast between his delicate frame and my strength sends a thrill through me.
I start to growl. The dark rumble builds in the back of my healed throat. The sheer pleasure of his tight heat pushes me closer and closer to the edge.
"Vaelis," I groan loud, the name torn from me.
Hearing his name spoken in my deep baritone completely undoes him. He wraps his arms tight around my neck. He buries his flushed face in my chest, tasting the salt on my skin.
"I’m here," he sobs, hot tears mixing with the ocean. "I’m staying right here."
His words shatter something in me. My driving rhythm falters. My powerful muscles lock tight.
"Mine," I roar into the fissure, the possessive claim bouncing off the stone walls.
I thrust incredibly deep. I bury myself to the absolute hilt. I climax with a deafening shout that shakes the rock walls around us, a declaration of ownership and devotion.
I pour hotly into him. A heavy, exhausted shudder runs through my solid frame. My muscles lock and tremble against his scales. Vaelis follows my lead, his core clenching tight around me, tipping over his own edge for a second time.
I hold him securely against the stone, small tremors wracking our bodies in the aftermath.
My breathing is ragged. Harsh, wet gasps tear at my throat as I struggle to regain control.
Slowly, the heavy tension drains out of my body.
I rest my warm head against his. I am incredibly heavy, pinning him against the rock with my weight.
"I love you," Vaelis whispers into the quiet, his voice raw and vulnerable.
I close my eyes.
The sea kept the Prince, and the Prince kept me.
"I love you," I rumble back, the words feeling both foreign and right on my tongue.
We stay tangled together in the dark fissure for a very long time. We do not rush. We let the cold ocean cycle around us, entirely content in the silence we chose.
