9. Mason

“Party tonight?” One of my teammates asks.

I look at him like he’s insane. Yes, we won the game. But it’s technically a school night. “Absolutely not. You should be looking at film for our next game. That block you missed took the wind straight out of me.”

He looks like I took his favorite toy from him, “Fine.”

Me: Hey sweetheart. We’re almost back on campus.

Kamryn: Can’t wait to see you *kiss face emoji*

Since meeting Kamryn, I pinch myself often. It’s my junior year and I didn’t intend to date someone as infectious as her. But when we met, I felt like I just knew.

My phone buzzes with another message from Kam.

Kamryn: *when you win a game* playlist

A smile creeps over my face. I pop in my headphones and cue up the playlist. Britney Spears sounds through my headphones. To Queen, Maroon 5, and Michael Jackson. My girl has some good music taste.

An hour passes and the telltale signs of campus getting closer make itself known. Palmetto trees line the buss path to our drop-off. Once parked, the guys gather their things and crowd the aisle to get off.

“No practice tomorrow, but there is conditioning tomorrow guys.” The coach announces before we’re out of earshot.

Catcalls and whistles sound as the guys file off the bus. Confusion swirls, but I mostly ignore them. That confusion clears when I step off the bus and see Kamryn holding a sign:

Here for the

Hottest QB

in SC

“Hi,” She says with a laugh.

I take in her chocolate brown hair pulled up in a haphazard bun. Our school logo on the front of her sweatshirt swallows her body whole.

I jog a couple of steps to her before enveloping her in a hug. At 6’5” my body dwarfs her. I feel protective of her in a way I can’t begin to explain. “I could get used to homecomings like this.”

She stretches up to her tiptoes and places a kiss on my neck that has my heart hammering out of my chest. “I prefer if you stay here, but I’m all for celebrations.”

I smush a kiss on her cheek before releasing her. I don’t need to go into the athletic training room, despite the hit I took on that missed block. I’m sure I’ll feel the effects the next time we have a full pads practice. Our hands link together as we walk hand in hand toward my car. This feeling of disbelief that she’s here is mind boggling.

The ride back to my dorm is in comfortable silence. The radio playing whatever song is trending at the moment.

Have I never been in someone’s space without having to fill every moment with mindless conversation? My teammates despise silence. Always needing to fill said silence with conversation. But with Kam, the silence is easy. We’ve sat in silence and we’ve had meaningful conversations. I cherish both of those moments with her.

Finding a parking spot is easy. It’s a late morning on a Sunday so students are either on their way back to campus from home or a party at another university.

We get out of my car and meet around the back before walking into my dorm.

“Do you wanna order food so we don’t have to leave your room for a while?” Kamryn asks.

We take the elevator up to the fourth floor of the dorm. Since this is the upperclassmen dorm, it’s fairly quiet. Few guys walk to other rooms for video games. But other than that, not a peep is made.

I give her hand a little squeeze before letting go to unlock my door. “Sounds good. We can go to the cafeteria for dinner.”

Kamryn saunters in and sets her bag on the desk in the corner of my room. I got lucky in the dorm room aspect. As upperclassmen, we have the option to share a room or have a single. Being around the team day in and day out made my decision easier. So I chose the single. It’s big enough for a full size bed, an oversized loveseat couch, a dresser with enough surface area for my TV, and a desk.

I never thought much about having a girl over. Usually it was a quick party hookup at the frat house. But with Kamryn, I’ve never been so glad I have a single room.

“Look at us communicating. It is with food, so not much we can mess up on,” Kamryn verbalizes with a smirk.

A smile attaches itself to my face. I lay out on the couch and hold my hand out for Kamryn. She comes with ease and settles her body next to mine. Her arm wraps around my waist and I feel her body instantly relax.

I play with a curl. Letting the moment wash over me like waves gently rolling to the shore. “How was your Saturday?”

“It was too quiet. I never realized how much life a football team brings to a school.”

“Ah…so you missed me?” I ask jokingly.

Her head pops up and she rolls her eyes. “How much bigger will your ego get if I say yes? I don’t feel like I deserve to miss you this soon.”

My arms tighten around her when she settles her head back down on my chest. “I think you can miss anyone you want to. Time shouldn’t be a factor in that. Because I’ll let you in on a secret. I missed you too.”

Kamryn burrows her face more into my chest and tightens her arms around me. My mind drifts off to the possibility of her and me in the future. One of the reasons I never thought of dating in college was because some girls never date with pure intentions. As soon as some girls find out you’re an athlete with the possibility of going pro, any true connection you think you have with them fly out the window. But not with Kamryn.

When we met, she seemed to have no clue about the extent of my influence. That’s not me being a narcissist, but helping put the football team back on the collegiate map, my face has been plastered all over campus since I was a freshman. I could say the same about her. Kamryn is magnetic. She might not know it, but I see the way people flock to her. She has a calming yet demanding presence that manages to make smooth sailing even smoother.

I reach over to the coffee table to grab the remote. Knowing neither of us will truly pay attention to the movie, I put it on a Fast amp; Furious movie. My hands drifting up and down her back while I drift away in thought looking at the TV screen.

Sometime later, I wake up with a new movie on and Kamryn’s face turned towards the screen. Her body securely draped over mine.

“Did I fall asleep?” I ask. My voice is scratchy from the sudden use.

I look over at the clock and see it’s just past noon. So not a terribly long nap, but enough to feel slightly well-rested but also confused as to what decade it is.

“I did too. You have some magical hands Mr. Brooks,” She tells me cheekily.

“Is that so?” I question her as my hands roam down her back and to her ass.

Her breathing changes, so I know it’s affected her, “Mm hmm.”

I give her a squeeze and move her legs so she’s straddling me. The movement wakes her up more so when she sits up she takes my hands in hers.

“I think it’s time we had that talk,” She pouts.

I’m assuming I know where she’s going with this, but I need to make sure. “Talk? Like the boyfriend and girlfriend talk? Or…”

“The sex talk, silly goose,” her gaze drops and she plays with the strings of my hoodie.

“Well my parents had the birds and the bees talk with me in high school. You might be a little late to that conversation.” I attempt a joke.

She gets a stern look on her face that has her brows scrunching, “I’m serious. Sex is whatever to some people. I’ve done the casual thing. I’ve done the relationship aspect of sex. But with you…something about sex with you could be different. I don’t want it to mess anything up.”

A breath leaves me. Part of being in a relationship that can go physical is having those types of conversations. And she’s right. “You’re right. I know you are. But just so you know, I haven’t been with anyone since the summer. Which may seem strange, but early practices and coming to campus earlier than others didn’t leave that much time for that.” Her eyes dart around my room and then focus on the strings of my hoodie. “Baby, what’s wrong?”

“Um, well up until recently I was in a situationship with someone.”

“How recently?” I tilt her chin up so I can see her eyes.

“About a week before we met. But he and I made a promise to each other that if and when we met someone we’d stop. He had already pulled away and after I met you, I knew I didn’t see him and I going on anymore. So that Monday I went to the free clinic and got tested. I’m all clean. And protected. I just thought you should know.”

I give her a reassuring smile. “I’m glad you told me. To be honest it’s good we had this talk now. I’m clean too by the way.”

“Oh. Okay. Good. That’s good.” Kamryn responds jittery.

“Okay,” I start and sit up with her still in my lap, “Baby I don’t want you to be nervous. Not around me. I can assure you that when we do get to that stage in our relationship, we’ll be perfect together.”

“So we stick to first base?” Kam asks as she moves to trail kisses on my jaw to my neck. Her hands snake under my shirt and tease my abs causing them to constrict.

“What’s your idea of first base, sweetheart?” I gather her hair in one hand. She moves closer and rolls her hips over my now hard cock.

“Lots and lots of kissing.”

“What else?” This girl is gonna make me lose my mind. “How fast til we’re at second base?”

She takes her hands out from under my shirt. “Over the clothes touching and groping. No skin on skin.”

I groan from the loss of her skin on mine.

“As for how fast we get to second base. That’s up in the air.”

I take her face in mine and smash our mouths together. My tongue seeks entrance right away and hers meets mine stroke for stroke. My breathing stutters to a halt. This is our first kiss not outside or in front of a crowd. It’s just us. The realization has my heartbeat kicking up speed.

I flip our positions and rest my weight on her. Kamryn’s legs wrap around my waist as she rolls her hips into me. She breaks the kiss and I take the moment to trail a path down her jaw, kissing her neck that has her moaning, and down to her chest.

We make eye contact as I hover over her chest. Her eyebrow lifts in a challenge.

So I take it. I take a shirt covered nipple in my mouth and tease the other one with enough pressure that it makes her eyes roll back and a moan slip free. I take my other hand and trail it down to her legging -covered legs. I feel the heat between her legs. Knowing she’s just as affected as I am turns me on even more. Her legs spread further as my thumb brushes her clit.

I pull away from her chest and look into her eyes as I rub her clit through her leggings. The hitch in her breath. How she strangles my forearm as I sense she’s getting closer.

When she stops breathing, I plunge my tongue into her mouth just as she falls over the edge. I feel a dampening as I continue to rub her from opening to clit. I rub her through her orgasm before slowing down my movement. Our kiss slows to where I just peck her face with kisses until she’s a giggling mess beneath me.

“First base is good,” Kamryn says when her laughter subsides.

The look in her eyes has me wanting to pinch myself. How did I get so lucky? Ill have to thank Sarah for introducing us.

“So, a few more dates until a homerun...got it,” I say with a wink.

“Easy buddy,” she starts with a chuckle, “I’m looking for quality dates.”

And quality dates are what she gets.

“Blue, forty-five. Blue forty-five!” My center snaps the ball to my waiting hands and I drop back in the pocket. Scanning the field for my receiver. I spin out of an almost tackle and pray that my offense holds the defense off so we can gain some yards.

One of my receivers breaks free as I run a couple yards down field before throwing it to him on my run. A lineman manages to tackle someone from the opposing team before one of my guys is brought down at the twenty-yard line.

We’re playing against one of our conference rivals on Homecoming weekend. Alumni, boosters, and fans pack the stadium. Nothing like the rush we get when we have a home game. But with the game, the stakes are higher. This game determines whether or not we make it to the playoffs. It’s the fourth quarter. We have one timeout left. I know my team is tired. Hell, I’ve been running on all cylinders since the game started.

My line and I look to the sideline for the next play. It’s a quarterback sneak where I pray my O-line holds the defense while I tuck the ball and run. This play opens me up to any hit so I’m hoping my guys hold strong.

We get into position and I call out the play. As soon as the ball is snapped a path is cleared for me as I take run through the path my guys created and off towards the end zone. The sound of the crowds cheering is deafening as I break a weak tackle from a safety. My legs carry me swiftly and safely across the line of the end zone.

What happens next is a blur. My teammates rush me and I look up to see that we’re up by double digits. Giving us a big lead. Special teams run onto the field for the field goal. There’s ten seconds left on the play clock. The field goal is easily made leaving us with seven seconds of play. When the ball is lined up and the whistle is blown, the ball is kicked.

I sit back and take it all in. I watch the seconds wind down on the clock. As we take the field again and line up for the snap, I take in a fortifying breath. When the ball snaps I spike it to the ground.

We just punched our ticket to the playoffs.

The student body and fans rush the field. Confetti is blasted from the cannons at the rafters. My body is jostled as congrats are shouted all around. But I’m waiting for that one person whose voice washes over me like a wave.

When I see her, my world clicks into place. Having her here, during one of the most incredible moments of my life. I can see it all flash before me. Us in the future. I know it’s quick.

And when I see her getting closer to me and fighting her way through the boisterous crowd my body settles.

“You did it, baby!” Kam says as she launches herself into me.

She lathes kisses on my sweaty face. Not caring for the sweat that’s transferring to her clothes or how bad I smell. I bask in the only person whose attention and accolades mean to me. Having her here on a celebratory game melds together with us in the future.

One thing is for certain. I need to do everything in my power to keep this girl with me for the rest of time.
