30 Avaline

The engine of the borrowed truck choked, shuddered, and died.

For a long moment, the only sound left in the world was the metallic clicking of the cooling block.

I sat in the passenger seat, staring through the bug-splattered windshield.

Outside the glass, the morning sun cut through the ancient ponderosa pines, casting long, undisturbed shadows across the dirt driveway and the weathered cedar fence line.

The Sanctuary Farm.

This place had lived as an astral ghost in my mind—the spirit-haven I had built in the Goddess’ Loom to survive the long dark.

In the Dreamscape, I had stood at that rough cedar fence a thousand times, gripping the splintered rails while the sweet scent of honeysuckle and warm dirt hung in an eternal golden four o’clock sun.

Back then, a river of pearl-white poison had cut through the meadow, keeping my White Wolf stranded on the far bank, unreachable.

Now, I looked through the windshield into the waking world.

There was no poisoned river. The chasm in the spirit-realm had fused into unbroken earth, and here on the mountain, the real meadow rolled out under the sun, thick with wild clover, sweetgrass, and blooming honeysuckle.

We are back, my White Wolf murmured softly, sitting tall and majestic in the quiet center of my ribs, her golden gaze drinking in the tree line. The soil where we were torn apart... it is green again. And we are inside our own skin.

We came back, I replied, my chest tightening with bittersweet, overwhelming joy. We survived.

The silence over the meadow now was a fragile thing.

Miles away, the low, steady rumble of heavy diesel engines and distant, overlapping howls drifted on the wind.

The packs of North America were already flooding California’s mountains in a massive, chaotic tide of roaring trucks and territorial posturing.

But here, within the warded tree line of the farm, there were no sirens and no cages.

Just the mountain wind in the high branches, the fragrance of pine, and the steady, deep pull of my mate’s breathing beside me in the cab.

Reed opened his door and stepped out into the dirt.

He walked around the hood of the truck, the light catching the dried blood smeared across his jaw and the deep, soot-blackened scars on his forearms. He opened my door, reached in, and slid one massive arm around my back, the other under my knees, hauling me against his chest.

The scent of him—old earth, green sap from a broken branch, and dry lightning—flooded my lungs.

He carried me up the warped wooden steps of the porch. The boards groaned under his boots. He pushed the front door open, stepping across the threshold.

Dust motes danced in the shafts of sunlight pouring through the cabin’s uncurtained windows.

My Scribe memory instantly mapped the room: the stone hearth, the table where we had planned our war, the bedroom doorway at the end of the hall.

The ghosts were gone, burned away by the white fire of our bond.

Reed carried me into the bedroom. He set me down gently on the edge of the mattress, the ancient springs protesting the weight.

Our hearth, my White Wolf purred, curling in the warm light of my marrow, her golden eyes watching the room. Our bed. The waiting is over.

For one heartbeat, he stood over me. The gold ring flared around the obsidian dark of his eyes, the fierce possessiveness of his wolf rising at our proximity. I leaned back on my hands, my lips parted, ready to pull him down.

He dropped to his knees on the dusty floorboards. The impact shook the room. He crawled the last two feet toward the bed, bowing his head until his face buried into the denim over my thighs. And he wept.

His massive hands gripped the mattress on either side of my hips, the knuckles white and trembling violently. He was pouring a lifetime of guilt, failure, and isolation onto the floor of the cabin.

I didn’t tell him to stand up or be strong. I leaned forward, sinking my fingers deep into the thick, dark hair at the nape of his neck, anchoring the magma.

He carried the mountain alone, my wolf whispered, her chest tight with deep, reverent sorrow. Hold him. Tell him the war is over.

I will, I promised her, tears spilling silently down my cheeks as I held his shaking shoulders. He doesn’t have to bleed alone anymore.

We stayed like that until the sun climbed low, casting the bed in dusky warmth.

His hands slid inward, finding my waist. He touched me with agonizing reverence, his calloused palms spreading over the curve of my hips as if mapping a sacred artifact.

He was trembling. The man who could punch through reinforced concrete was shivering at the friction of my denim under his thumbs.

He was treating me like spun glass. Like a casualty who might still fracture.

I caught his wrists and stopped the careful sweep of his thumbs. His breath hitched, and he lifted his head. His eyes were red-rimmed, wet, and wrecked with starving hunger.

“You’re treating me like something fragile again,” I said, my voice dropping into that quiet, absolute register. “Stop.”

I stood up from the bed. He stayed on his knees, his hands falling back to his sides, watching me with awe and terror.

I pulled my borrowed shirt over my head, tossing it onto the floorboards. I undid the buckle of my pants, stepping out of them until I stood entirely bare in the light. The cool mountain air brushed over my skin, but the heat in my blood kept me warm.

Reed’s breath stopped. His eyes tracked upward, taking in the faint marks in the crooks of my elbows, the pale curve of my stomach, the dark bite mark on my collarbone from our mating. A ragged groan vibrated in his chest.

I took a step forward, closing the distance until my bare knees brushed his chest. I interlaced my fingers in his hair, tilting his head back further.

“I will only be held by a man who kneels for me of his own free will. A man who submits to our law.” I brushed my thumb over the heavy pulse at his jawline. “Bare it. Prove it.”

Reed didn’t hesitate. He dropped his hands flat against his thighs, completely open in his surrender, and tilted his head sharply to the side. He offered me the mark from my mating bite.

The Founding King bows only to his Queen, my White Wolf stated, her posture regal and proud within our chest. Take him. He is entirely ours.

“My arrogance cost you,” he rasped, the words tearing out of his throat, raw and absolute. “I will spend the rest of my life keeping you free. I am yours, Avaline. My life. My blood. Everything I am.”

I grabbed the collar of his torn shirt and hauled him upward.

He surged to his feet, catching me by the hips as I moved, and the carefulness evaporated the second our skin made contact. The impact of his massive chest against my bare breasts knocked the breath from my lungs. He was a furnace. A wall of unyielding heat.

I shoved the ruined shirt off his shoulders, dragging my nails down the topography of his back. My fingertips snagged on the thick burn scars. I traced them with ruthless possession.

“Reed,” I commanded, pulling his mouth down.

His mouth crashed down on mine.

His tongue swept past my lips, tasting and demanding. I met the hunger with my own, my hands knotting in his hair to hold him flush against me. His hands slid down my spine, finding the backs of my thighs, and he lifted me effortlessly off the floor.

I wrapped my legs around his waist, locking my ankles behind his back, pressing my center directly against the ridge of his erection through his canvas.

He carried me the two steps to the bed and we fell together, the mattress groaning beneath our weight.

He tore off his pants, kicking them to the floorboards as he settled his weight between my thighs. He stayed propped on his forearms, his obsidian eyes burning down into mine, searching my face for any lingering shadow of the cold.

He found only the golden-ringed hunger of a woman claiming her mate.

“You’re beautiful,” he panted, his voice a broken rumble. “Goddess, Avaline. I spent years trying to remember the shape of your smile. Now you’re here.”

He dropped his head, his mouth finding the mating mark at my collarbone.

He licked the healed bite, then tracked a blazing trail of open-mouthed kisses down my sternum.

I arched off the mattress as his mouth closed over the peak of my breast, sucking hard, the wet rhythm sending heat straight down to my core.

His calloused hand slid down my stomach, thick fingers parting my thighs and sliding directly into my wet heat.

A sharp gasp tore out of my throat.

My inner walls clamped down around his fingers, my spine bowing off the bed as a high cry broke from my lips. He swallowed the sound, kissing me deeply while his fingers worked me until I was trembling against his palm.

“I’ve got you,” he growled against my lips, his thumb pressing hard against my center. “Let it burn, sweetheart. Burn it all down.”

He withdrew his hand, leaving me aching. I reached down, guiding his thick, throbbing length against my entrance.

“Fill it, Reed,” I whispered against his jaw. “No more waiting.”

He drove into me.

The stretch stole the breath from my lungs. The incredible fullness of him buried deep inside me sent a shockwave of absolute rightness slamming into the base of my spine. He buried himself to the hilt in one smooth, unrelenting thrust, seating his hips flush against mine.

I arched hard, clutching his broad shoulders. Through the bond, I felt the sheer magnitude of his devotion. Total worship. The complete surrender of an Alpha returning home to his mate.

He held still for one heartbeat, his muscles quivering from the strain, giving me time to adjust. I locked my heels behind his back and pulled him in, demanding the rhythm.

He set a driving, unyielding pace.

The bed frame battered against the log wall of the cabin, the rhythmic impact echoing like a drumbeat.

Thought dissolved into raw sensation: the heat of our slick skin, the friction of him filling me over and over.

Every time he withdrew, I arched to meet him.

Every time he drove deep, a higher wave of pleasure crested in my blood.

He groaned my name, shifting his weight to hook an arm beneath my lower back, tilting my hips to grind deep against my center with every stroke.

The pleasure wound impossibly tight in my pelvis, rising until I couldn’t breathe.

“Reed,” I gasped, my fingernails biting into the scars of his back.

“Let go, sweetheart,” he commanded, his hips snapping forward with relentless power. “Give it all to me.”

The climax detonated like white fire.

My body shattered. I screamed his name, my inner walls spasming around him in crushing waves.

Claimed, my White Wolf howled, throwing her silver muzzle to the heavens in our soul, bathed in celestial light. Bound in blood and stone.

Reed roared, his entire frame locking rigid as he reached his own release. He buried himself as deep as physically possible, emptying his seed into my womb in thick, pulsing waves that matched the contractions of my body.

Slowly, the roaring in my ears faded to the sound of our combined breathing.

He collapsed forward onto his elbows, burying his face in the crook of my neck, pressing soft, reverent kisses along the curve of my jaw. I wrapped my arms around his shoulders, holding him flush against me, feeling our hearts beat in synchronized tandem.

We are whole, my wolf whispered, nuzzling against my consciousness with profound tenderness and peace. In the dream and on the earth. Whole.

Whole, I answered, holding my mate close as tears of joy wet my cheeks.

We stayed tangled in the sheets as the sun climbed lower. Reed rested his heavy hand over my hip, his thumb stroking my skin with lazy contentment. The Scribe memory, trained to constantly search for the next threat, finally spun outward and met the perimeter of the room.

It found the sturdy log walls. It found the sunset. It found the steady heartbeat of the man sleeping beside me.

It found nothing else.

The archive went quiet. The still water leveled out, peaceful and clear.

I closed my eyes, breathed in the scent of pine smoke and home, and drifted into deep, dreamless rest.
