Chapter 12 Mine to Protect #2

"Get in."

A smile appeared.

A real one.

Not polite.

Not casual.

The kind reserved specifically for him.

And that realization felt far too good.

Minutes later, they sat at a small diner thirty minutes outside Willow Ridge.

Far enough away to avoid curious eyes.

Close enough to make the drive worthwhile.

The waitress already knew Damon by name.

She also wisely refrained from asking questions.

One of the many reasons he liked this place.

Food arrived.

Coffee followed.

Conversation came easily.

As always.

Elliot talked about the youth center.

A mural project.

Several difficult teenagers finally beginning to trust him.

The excitement in his voice made the entire story more interesting.

Not because Damon cared deeply about murals.

Because Elliot cared.

That alone made listening worthwhile.

At one point, the younger man pulled out his phone.

Several photographs appeared.

Student artwork.

Paint-covered tables.

Half-finished projects.

Damon studied each one carefully.

Not because he understood art.

Because Elliot wanted him to.

The distinction mattered.

"You're doing that thing again."

Damon blinked.

"What thing?"

The younger man smiled.

"Listening."

The accusation confused him.

"That's generally how conversations work."

"No."

Elliot laughed softly.

"Most people wait for their turn to talk."

Damon frowned.

"I talk."

"Sometimes."

The answer sounded suspiciously amused.

The conversation continued.

Stories.

Jokes.

Shared observations.

The comfortable rhythm they'd developed over recent weeks.

By the time dinner ended, neither seemed eager to leave.

So they didn't.

Instead, they drove aimlessly through the countryside.

Windows down.

Music playing softly.

The warm Texas night stretched endlessly around them.

Eventually, they stopped at a familiar overlook outside town.

One they'd visited before.

The view remained unchanged.

Open fields.

Distant lights.

Endless stars.

Yet tonight felt different somehow.

Maybe because Damon felt different.

The farmhouse.

The future.

The near accident.

Everything seemed to be pushing him toward realizations he'd spent years avoiding.

The two of them sat on the tailgate of his truck.

Close.

Comfortably close.

The kind of closeness that had gradually become normal.

Even though nothing about it felt normal.

Not really.

The night air carried the scent of grass and earth.

Crickets sang in the distance.

For a while, neither spoke.

The silence felt peaceful.

Then Elliot sighed.

The sound immediately caught Damon's attention.

"What?"

The younger man stared toward the horizon.

"Sometimes I wish things were simpler."

The statement settled between them.

Damon understood exactly what he meant.

The age difference.

The town.

The judgment.

The uncertainty.

None of it was simple.

"Yeah."

Elliot smiled sadly.

"You know what's funny?"

"What?"

"I never expected any of this."

The younger man laughed softly.

"When I moved here, I had this whole plan."

Damon listened.

College.

Good grades.

A degree.

Eventually moving somewhere bigger.

A straightforward future.

Everything mapped out.

Then life happened.

The explanation sounded familiar.

Because Damon knew exactly what it felt like when life ignored carefully constructed plans.

"I think that's how it works."

Elliot glanced toward him.

"What?"

"The important stuff."

The younger man looked curious.

"You don't plan it."

The words emerged before Damon could stop them.

"It just shows up."

Silence followed.

Not uncomfortable.

Thoughtful.

Elliot studied him carefully.

The look made Damon increasingly aware of how close they were sitting.

How easy it would be to reach out.

The realization wasn't helping.

"You've changed."

The statement caught him off guard.

"What?"

The younger man smiled.

"Since I met you."

Damon immediately disagreed.

"No."

"Yes."

The confidence in Elliot's voice was annoying.

Mostly because he might be right.

The younger man continued.

"You're happier."

The same observation Roy had made.

Wonderful.

Apparently it was becoming obvious.

Damon looked away.

Toward the stars.

Anywhere else.

Elliot's voice softened.

"You are."

The certainty in those two words made arguing feel pointless.

Because the truth was simple.

He was happier.

He slept better.

Laughed more.

Thought about the future.

The changes felt undeniable.

And every single one connected back to the person sitting beside him.

The realization hit harder than expected.

For several seconds, Damon simply stared at the horizon.

Trying to organize thoughts that refused organization.

Trying to contain feelings that no longer fit inside the walls he'd built.

The effort failed.

Completely.

Because Elliot chose that exact moment to smile.

A small smile.

Warm.

Affectionate.

Entirely genuine.

And something inside Damon cracked.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Enough for truth to slip through.

"You're the best thing that's happened to me in years."

The words appeared before he could stop them.

Silence.

Immediate.

Absolute.

Damon froze.

The realization struck instantly.

Shit.

He hadn't meant to say that out loud.

At least not yet.

Maybe not ever.

The confession hung between them.

Raw.

Honest.

Terrifying.

Slowly, Elliot turned toward him.

The younger man's eyes widened slightly.

Emotion flashed across his face.

Surprise.

Affection.

Something deeper.

For a moment, neither moved.

Neither spoke.

The night seemed to hold its breath.

Damon considered taking it back.

Pretending it meant something else.

The lie died immediately.

Because both of them knew.

The truth had already arrived.

The younger man's expression softened.

The look nearly destroyed what remained of Damon's composure.

Because no one had ever looked at him like that before.

Not once.

"Damon..."

His name sounded different coming from Elliot.

Always had.

The older man swallowed hard.

For the first time in years, words failed him.

Completely.

Then Elliot reached over.

Not dramatically.

Not urgently.

Just enough for their hands to touch.

The simple contact sent a shock through both of them.

A small gesture.

A life-changing one.

The silence stretched.

Heavy with everything neither quite knew how to say.

Because the accidental confession had revealed something important.

Something impossible to hide now.

This wasn't infatuation.

Wasn't attraction.

Wasn't temporary.

Somewhere along the way, Damon had fallen much deeper than he intended.

And judging by the emotion shining in Elliot's eyes, the younger man understood exactly what that meant.

The realization left both of them shaken.

Not because they feared the truth.

Because the truth felt too powerful to ignore.

As the Texas stars stretched endlessly above them, neither spoke for a long time.

There wasn't much left to say.

One careless sentence had already changed everything.

And neither of them would forget it.
