Chapter Eleven
Kara
I opened my eyes with a short gasp leaving my mouth. The first memory that came to the surface was that wolf gripping my neck from behind. I immediately tried to get up. Something forcefully pulled me back into my seat, and I hissed in pain. I found that I couldn’t leave where I was. I’d been chained to the bed. I looked to my side and saw Sophia lying on the bed. She was still asleep.
The wolf who attacked me walked into the room with a stupid grin on his face.
“I did not introduce myself earlier,” he said. “Forgive my manners. I’m called Warwick.” He is holding a plate of food. “I brought this for you. You must be hungry. It’s not every day a powerful witch like you gets kidnapped by a wolf.” He smirked and I just wished I could cast the spell in my head right now and have his ears melting. But this damn collar around my neck, whatever it was, wouldn’t let me cast any spell.
“You must be wondering why I took you with me. I need you to make sure that she delivers my pup safely,” he points at Sophia. The audacity to claim to be a father to Sophia’s child, it sickened me to my bone.
“I have not had a chance to have a doctor check her out yet. Have you?” I asked.
He scoffed. “That isn’t my job.”
“No? But, it is. You got her pregnant. You want to be the father of her child, you need to step up.”
He growled and his eyes changed color, “Don’t tell me what to do, woman.”
I shook my head and let out a soft laugh. “I guess it hurts your masculinity too much to actually help a woman out, even though you put her in the position she’s in.”
“You’re lucky I need your help.”
“Or, what? You’ll hurt me?”
He sneered and threw the plate of food down in front of me. The way the plate slapped the floor caused the food to splatter. “It was your idea that I take you with me anyway,” he said, calming himself.
“Where is the human?” I asked.
“He is of no significance to me anymore. And rest assured, he is the least of your problems.” He walked closer to me and crouched in front of me. He was so close, my chest was in his face and I saw the way his eyes darted from my face to my boobs each time my chest rose when I drew in a breath. He grabbed my thighs firmly. I tried to maintain a calm look, not to let him see that he affected me negatively, that way I intimidated him subtly.
“If you hope to survive, you will do as I tell you to, Kara. For your own sake, that baby better be safely delivered.” He looked down between my legs and looked up at my face, and he smiled, and then got up and left.
After he was gone, I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. I faced the ceiling to prevent the tears that were starting to cloud my eyes from falling. Fuck, I muttered. I could really use my mother’s help right now. I shut my eyes tightly as I allowed old memories to wash over me. I remembered how mom trained me in the art of casting spells. She taught me everything I knew. She also taught me to be strong. And that was why I had the willpower to stand against these wolves, and I was able to save many women. But now, who would save me, I wondered.
I glanced over at Sophia. I was sure that she would be due any day now. I needed to be strong for her. I couldn’t let her see me weak.
Sophia began to stir.
“Sophia,” I muttered. “Hey”. I had a feeling she believed all that happened was a dream. And now she would wake up to the realization that it was in fact all real. I would need to calm her before she got too overwhelmed and her baby became distressed.
She looked at me. “Kara,” she said softly and she sat up. Then she noticed that I was chained to the chair I was sitting on. “Kara?” She squinted her eyes, confused.
“Hey, Sophia, I’m fine, okay? Just don’t think too much.”
“Where are we?” she looked around. The realization was starting to set on her. She was beginning to remember. I could already see tears forming in her eyes. “Oh my God. We were attacked.” Her heart was beating fast.
“Sophia, you need to calm down, or you’ll hurt your baby,” I said sternly.
“My baby,” she cried, looking down at her big stomach and caressing it.
“You need to be strong for your baby, Sophia. You don’t worry about any of this. I will get us out of here, okay? I promise.”
“Kara,” she muttered under her breath.
“Do you trust me?” I asked. She nodded swiftly. I smiled at her. I gave her my hand and we locked fingers tightly.
I felt like my heart would burst. I was overwhelmed, but I was keeping my emotions contained, and it was hard. In truth, at them moment, I was clueless as regards what to do. I felt so helpless without my abilities. But I had faith that something good was going to happen. All I’d ever done was save people. I had faith that now that I was the one needing to be saved, a savior would come.
My mind went to John.
He will save me.
“Why did they put the collar around your neck?” Sophia asked, snuffing.
“It dampens my powers,” I answered.
“How?”
“I don’t know. It must be built with a special kind of magic. I’ve never heard of such a device, though I’m sure others like me can create such an object.”
“Have you tried removing it?” Sophia asked.
I looked at her. It had not occurred to me to try. I believe that if they put it on me, I couldn’t remove it myself. The collar must have preventative measures so that I wouldn’t be able to take it off.
“I’m not sure that would be a good idea,” I said.
“You’re not going to try? If there’s any hope of getting out of here, it would be with your witch powers,” Sophia said.
I sighed. I still thought it was a bad idea to try to remove the collar, but I had to try, at least to please Sophia. I put both my hands on the sides of the collar and tried to summon my wolf strength and pulled. As soon as I pulled, a pulse flowed out through the collar and seeped into my skin from my neck down. It wasn’t a shock per se. It felt like someone lit a match inside me, and my innards caught fire at once. It felt like a deep, melting sensation. It scared me enough that I was fairly certain it would lead to my death if I continued to try and pull it off.
I felt weak as if I was blinking in and out of consciousness.
And in the middle of that, I fell into a trance, and I began to see things. I saw a redhead. She looked young and beautiful. And she was looking at me. One moment, she was smiling, bright-eyed, and the next, she looked really angry, and there was blood all over her face and then before my eyes, she began to shift.
I’d only heard about them. I had never seen one before. A dragon and it was beautiful.
Who was she and why was I having a vision of her? Every time I had a vision, it was something that was going to happen. Only, I wasn’t sure when.
