CHAPTER 7

REMMIE

She’s back again.

This is the third time this week. Conveniently, Shade wasn’t here any of those times.

The thought of her seeing him fills me with odd unease.

She walked in through the front door like she was the owner.

Her stupid heels scuffing my vinyl wood floors.

Sure, they were on sale, but it’s the principle of the thing.

“What is it now, Dalia? I really don’t have time for you today.

” I don’t understand why she’s coming around now of all time times.

She’s been in business for months and this is the most I’ve ever been around her.

I find I don’t like it one bit. She seems, off.

Like she’s an extra piece in a Lisa Frank puzzle.

The air around her isn’t right. I can hear my Gran’s voice in my head.

That there is an evil woman, She’d say. Something deep within me believes it’s true.

“You need to be kinder to the people who walk through your door, you know. Your face says I’m not welcome.” Dalia’s smile is wicked as she looks down at me, making the hair on my back of my neck rise. Oh, I would love to show her how unwelcome she is here.

“Well. Seeing as how this is my business and I can refuse service to anyone, I have no issue showing you how I feel about you being here.”

I cross my arms over my chest, trying to look more intimidating than I feel right now. I probably look like a chibi character to her. She chuckles.

“I love your fire, bubblegum. But one day, it will burn you.”

She turns and leaves, her warning hanging heavy in the air. Why me? What have I ever done to that lady to make her so nasty towards me? The thought that, maybe, this has nothing to do with me, crosses my mind.
