7. Chapter 7
Phoenix screamed.
Emma tried to hold the baby back, but Phoenix was strong. Five and a half months old and already fighting with muscle density that defied known science. He squirmed in her arms, reaching toward the defector on the medical cot.
Gunner entered the tent. Emma's pulse spiked immediately—he could hear it, enhanced senses cataloguing her autonomic response.
Her face flushed. She was wearing a simple shirt and jeans, nothing revealing, but he could see her nipples harden beneath the fabric.
Baseline woman responding to the alpha despite being married, despite knowing it was hopeless.
She looked away quickly. Tried to hide the reaction.
"He wants to help," Emma said, voice slightly breathless. "Phoenix. He keeps trying to reach the sick ones."
"Let him."
"But—"
"Let him try."
Emma set Phoenix down. The baby dropped to his feet—shouldn't be possible at his age—and crawled fast across the tent floor.
Zara looked up from checking the defector's vitals.
She was wearing her EMT uniform, shirt stretched tight across her heavy D-cup tits.
The fabric gaped slightly between buttons, showing the curve of her cleavage.
Her pants hugged wide hips and thick thighs—the most voluptuous woman in the settlement, built for breeding in a way that made Gunner's cock stir just looking at her.
She saw him noticing. Her scent shifted—arousal, sharp and immediate. Spring was coming. Her cycle was shifting toward fertile. Soon she'd come to him, ask for what her body needed.
"Emma, grab him before—" Zara started.
Too late. Phoenix's small hand touched the defector's arm.
The man gasped. His eyes went wide. "The pain. It's... less."
Zara's eyes narrowed. She pulled out a scanner, ran it over the defector's cellular degradation markers. Her tits pressed against the scanner as she leaned forward. Her expression shifted from skepticism to shock.
"Get Tasha," she said. "Now."
Emma fled. Grateful for the excuse to leave, to get away from Gunner's presence before her body betrayed her more obviously.
Gunner watched her go. Noticed the way she moved—hurried, almost running. Her ass shifted in her jeans with each step. Baseline. Married. Unavailable. But her biology didn't care about those facts.
0917 HOURS — LAB
Tasha arrived with Emma trailing behind. Gunner's eyes tracked over her immediately—six weeks pregnant now, though she hadn't officially confirmed it yet. He could smell the hormonal changes. Could see the subtle shifts in her body.
Her tits were already fuller. Not obviously bigger to baseline eyes, but he could see the difference. Her nipples were darker through her shirt, more sensitive. Her hips had widened just slightly, body preparing for what was growing inside her.
She was wearing fitted pants and a button-up shirt. Professional. But the shirt pulled tight across her chest now where it had been loose two weeks ago.
She saw him looking. Smiled slightly. Knew he could sense the pregnancy even before she'd confirmed it with tests.
Tasha stared at the scanner readings, then at Phoenix sitting contentedly in Emma's lap, then back at the readings.
"This shouldn't be possible," she said quietly.
Gunner stood beside her, watching his son. Phoenix looked up at him with those ice-blue eyes and smiled. Reached out with both hands.
"Da. Up."
Gunner lifted Phoenix, felt the warmth spread through his chest—the same healing touch that had been easing his enhanced metabolism's pain for months.
Tasha pulled up cellular imaging, leaning over the display. Her ass pressed against her pants, the fabric stretched tight. Gunner noticed. Filed it away. His woman. Carrying his daughter. Beautiful even exhausted from eighteen-hour days.
"Phoenix's touch triggers regenerative signaling in other enhanced humans," Tasha explained. "When he makes contact, their degradation slows. His DNA is producing compounds no artificial enhancement protocol can replicate."
The door opened. Isabella entered with Storm strapped to her chest. She'd been running training drills—her skin was flushed, sweat dampening her tank top.
The fabric clung to her tits, showing the outline of her sports bra underneath.
Her tactical pants rode low on her hips, showing the defined V of her abs.
She smelled like exertion and aggression and female musk. Post-workout pheromones that made every enhanced male in range take notice.
Gunner's cock stirred. Pack Second. Mother of his second child. Still the most dangerous woman in the settlement even four months postpartum.
The four-month-old was pulling herself up against her mother's tactical vest, trying to climb higher. Her little face was furious at gravity.
"No!" the baby announced fiercely.
Isabella's expression was pure pride. "First word this morning. She's been saying it at everything all day."
Storm saw Phoenix and immediately reached for him, making demanding sounds. Her little fists opened and closed.
Isabella crossed to Gunner. Close. Her scent stronger now—sweat, arousal, territorial possession. She'd just spent two hours establishing dominance over combined forces through physical contact. Her body was still running hot from it.
"Gabi," Storm said, reaching for Gabriela who wasn't there.
Phoenix reached back. "Storm."
Gunner and Isabella positioned the babies so they could touch. The moment their hands connected, they went quiet.
Emma watched from the corner, careful not to get too close to Gunner. Her pulse was still elevated. Her scent leaked arousal she was trying desperately to suppress.
Tasha noticed. Her eyes flicked to Emma, reading the baseline woman's physical response. Understanding. Sympathizing. But unable to change biological hierarchy.
"Proto-language," Tasha said. "They're developing communication patterns unique to enhanced cognition. By the time they're two, we might not be able to follow their conversations at all."
Phoenix made a series of soft sounds. Storm responded with different tones. Back and forth. Their eyes locked on each other with impossible focus for infants.
Then Phoenix touched Storm's arm. The same healing touch he'd given the defector.
Storm relaxed immediately. Stopped fighting to climb. Settled against Isabella's chest with a contented sound.
"What was that?" Isabella asked.
"Phoenix soothing her," Tasha said. "He can sense when enhanced humans are in pain or distressed. Storm's been frustrated all morning—trying to walk when her body isn't ready yet. Phoenix just... helped her calm down."
"They're protective of each other," Emma added. "Yesterday someone I didn't recognize approached Storm's crib. Phoenix screamed until they backed away. Not crying. Screaming. Like a threat."
Gunner studied his children. Phoenix calm and watchful. Storm fierce and demanding. Both of them developing at rates that should terrify him but somehow just made him more determined to protect them.
"If Voss comes for them," he said quietly, "she'll have to go through me."
"Through all of us," Isabella corrected.
1134 HOURS — EMMA'S QUARTERS
Emma fed Phoenix while Daniel sat across the small room, not looking at them.
Gunner had brought Phoenix to her twenty minutes ago. Had stood in the doorway just long enough for Emma's body to betray her completely—pulse spiking, face flushing, nipples hardening beneath her shirt. He'd noticed. She'd seen him notice. Had nearly died of shame.
Then he'd left Phoenix with her and walked away, and Emma had wanted to cry from relief and frustration in equal measure.
Her husband had been distant for weeks. Ever since Suzuki's convoy arrived and the settlement population exploded. Ever since Emma had started spending more time with Phoenix and Storm than with Daniel.
"You're going to spoil him," Daniel said quietly.
"He's five months old. You can't spoil a baby."
"You know what I mean." Daniel finally looked at her. At Phoenix contentedly eating mashed fruit from Emma's spoon, reaching for her with sticky hands. "You've bonded with them. The alpha's children. More than is... appropriate."
Emma's chest tightened. She could still smell Gunner in the room. That masculine scent that made her body respond in ways that shamed her. Made her wet despite being married. Despite knowing it was hopeless.
"Someone has to care for them. Tasha's working eighteen-hour days on the degradation cure. Isabella's running combat operations. These children need—"
"They're not yours, Emma."
The words hit like a slap.
Phoenix looked up. Sensed the tension. Made a soft worried sound and reached for Emma's face with his small hand.
Emma's throat was tight. Her eyes burned. She held Phoenix closer, breathed in his baby scent mixed with Gunner's lingering presence.
"It's okay, sweetie," Emma whispered, even though it wasn't.
"I'm just saying you're getting too attached," Daniel continued.
"They're enhanced. We're baseline. You're their caregiver, not their mother.
When this is over, when Voss is dealt with, the pack will raise their own children.
You'll go back to... what? Missing something you were never meant to have? "
Emma stared at her husband. At the man she'd married before the collapse, before North Haven, before enhanced humans and pack dynamics and apex males who made her body respond with shameful need just by walking into a room.
"I love them," she said simply. "I can't help it. Phoenix needs me. Storm needs me. And yes, I know they're not mine. I know I'm baseline and temporary and... outside the pack. But they're children. And I won't stop caring for them just because it hurts."
Daniel shook his head. "It's not just the children. It's him. Gunner. You look at him like—" He stopped. Couldn't finish.
Emma's face burned. "I'm married to you."
