8. Chapter 8
Gunner lay motionless in the snow, watching the Cerberus scout team through the pre-dawn darkness. Enhanced vision picked out details baseline eyes would miss: twelve soldiers, enhanced movement patterns, tactical spacing, suppression grenades on their belts.
The comms relay sat in the center of their formation. Antenna array visible even from two hundred meters. They were setting up to transmit.
"Target identified," Suzuki's voice came through the radio, steady and professional. "Drone confirms twelve hostiles. Comms relay active. You have maybe ten minutes before they broadcast."
Gunner keyed his mic once. Acknowledged.
Isabella was to his right, fifty meters out, rifle ready. Tucker and six of Suzuki's soldiers were positioned in an L-shaped ambush. First combined operation—Northern Federation's disciplined enhanced troops paired with North Haven's combat-hardened survivors.
"Ground element, you have green light," Suzuki said. "I'll call movement."
Gunner rose from the snow. Silent. Began moving.
Enhanced senses catalogued everything. Wind direction. Snow depth. The scouts' attention patterns. Heartbeats. The metallic scent of their weapons and the sharper tang of enhanced biology under stress.
They knew someone was hunting them. Didn't know where.
Gunner moved like a ghost. No sound. No disturbance. Twenty years of SEAL training combined with enhanced speed and the biological imperative screaming in his blood.
They'd come for his children.
Mistake.
He closed to fifty meters. Forty. Thirty.
One scout turned. Enhanced senses picking up something wrong.
Too late.
Gunner hit the formation like a freight train.
His fist went through the first scout's tactical vest and ribcage. Felt ribs shatter. Felt the heart rupture. The man died before he could scream.
Gunner spun. Grabbed the second scout by the throat. Enhanced strength crushed the trachea. Snapped the neck with a twist. Dropped the body.
The third scout was raising his rifle.
Gunner moved faster than enhanced reflexes could track. Closed the distance in a heartbeat. Ripped the rifle from the man's hands and used it to cave in his skull. The stock shattered. Blood sprayed across the snow.
Fourth scout got his weapon up. Fired.
Gunner had already moved. The rounds hit empty air. He came in from the side, drove his tactical knife through the gap in the man's armor, up under the ribs, into the heart. Twisted. Pulled it free as the scout collapsed.
Four dead in eight seconds.
The rest of the formation scattered. Professional. Disciplined. But Gunner had already disrupted their defensive positions.
Isabella's rifle cracked. Three shots. Three scouts down with headshots at one hundred fifty meters.
Tucker's team opened up from the flank. Controlled bursts. Two more scouts fell.
One scout bolted for the trees. Running hard. Enhanced speed eating up ground.
"Runner heading east," Suzuki's voice said. "Isabella, you have the angle."
Isabella was already moving. Enhanced speed and Army Ranger training. She tracked through the snow, rifle up, breathing controlled.
The scout was fast. But Isabella was faster.
Two miles into the trees. The scout stumbled. Just for a second. Fatigue breaking through enhanced stamina.
Isabella stopped. Planted her feet. Four hundred yards. Wind from the northwest at eight miles per hour. Target moving at enhanced speed.
She exhaled. Squeezed the trigger.
The shot echoed through the trees.
The scout went down. Single round through the spine. Dead before she hit the ground.
Isabella keyed her mic. "Runner neutralized."
"Copy," Suzuki said. "Ground element, status?"
Gunner stood in the center of the ambush site. Four bodies at his feet. Three more scattered where Isabella had dropped them. Two more where Tucker's team had engaged.
Three scouts on their knees. Hands zip-tied. Blood running down their faces. Terrified.
"Three captured," Gunner said. "Comms relay destroyed."
He'd crushed it with his boot after killing the first four. The antenna array was twisted metal and sparking electronics.
"Casualties?"
"None on our side."
A pause on the radio. Then Suzuki's voice, different somehow. "That was... efficient."
"That was gentle." Gunner's voice was flat. Cold. "They threatened my children."
0521 HOURS — INTERROGATION
The three captured scouts knelt in the snow. Tucker's team had their rifles trained. Isabella stood to the side, reloading magazines, blood still on her hands from the runner.
Gunner walked to the first scout. Male. Enhanced. Maybe twenty-five. Cerberus insignia on his tactical vest.
"Orders," Gunner said.
The scout's jaw tightened. "Name, rank—"
Gunner grabbed his head with both hands. Twisted. The neck snapped with a wet crack.
The body fell.
The second scout started talking immediately. Words tumbling out in terrified desperation.
"Eight hundred soldiers, armored vehicles, two helicopters. We were advance recon. Locate the settlement, confirm presence of high-value biological assets, transmit coordinates—"
"High-value biological assets," Gunner repeated.
"The children. Naturally-born enhanced specimens. Voss has standing orders: secure them for research. Lethal force authorized on all other enhanced in the settlement."
The third scout was crying. Pissing himself. The wet stain spreading across his pants.
"Deployment positions," Gunner said to the second scout.
"Primary staging forty miles south. Secondary fallback sixty miles. Voss commands from mobile HQ. Command frequencies are encrypted but we have backup codes—" He rattled off numbers. Positions. Everything.
Isabella pulled out a tablet. Started recording.
When the scout finished, Gunner looked at him. The man's eyes were wide. Desperate. Begging.
"Please. I told you everything. I have a family. I was just following—"
Gunner snapped his neck.
Quick. No ceremony. Just execution.
The third scout screamed. Incoherent. Soaked in his own piss and sobbing.
Gunner turned to him. The scout tried to scramble backward. Couldn't move with his hands zip-tied.
"Please please please I'll tell you anything please don't—"
"Run," Gunner said.
The scout stopped. Stared.
"What?"
"Run. Tell Voss I'm coming. Tell her what happened here. Tell her I killed your team. Tell her if she comes for my children, I'll kill every soldier she has and then I'll kill her."
Gunner cut the zip-ties.
The scout didn't move. Too terrified to process.
"Run," Gunner repeated. Voice dropping to something primal. "Before I change my mind."
The scout ran. Enhanced speed carrying him south through the snow, stumbling, falling, getting up, running harder.
Tucker watched him disappear. "Sir, letting him go—"
"Sends a message." Gunner turned to the rest of the team. "Voss thinks we're cornered. Desperate. Easy targets. Now she knows we're hunting."
Isabella wiped blood off her knife. "Good. Let her be scared for a change."
She was aroused. Combat did that to her. Always had.
Her nipples were hard beneath the blood-spattered shirt. Her pupils were dilated. Her thighs pressed together as she walked, managing the heat building between them.
She stopped in front of Gunner. Their eyes met.
Her scent spiked. That sharp arousal mixed with blood and sweat and the satisfaction of successful violence.
Gunner's cock stirred. Pack Second. Covered in enemy blood. Beautiful and lethal in equal measure.
"You should clean up," he said.
"I should fuck you first." Isabella's voice dropped. "While the adrenaline's still hot. While I can still smell the kill on my hands."
"Later."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
Isabella's smile widened. She walked past him toward the settlement, not bothering to wipe the blood from her face. Let everyone see what Pack Second looked like after a successful hunt.
Suzuki met them at the gate. Her drone was packed away, tablet still showing the feed from the ambush.
She'd watched everything. Every kill. Every interrogation. The neck snaps. The executions.
Gunner's enhanced senses read her immediately. Elevated heart rate—racing, actually. Flushed skin beneath the tactical gear, heat radiating from her body. Pupils blown wide. Her scent—sharp arousal so intense it was almost painful, mixed with fear and something deeper.
Her nipples were hard beneath her tactical vest. He could see them pressing against the fabric. Her thighs were pressed together so tight her stance was affected.
She'd watched an apex male defend his pack. Watched him kill without hesitation. Watched him demonstrate exactly what he was capable of when someone threatened what was his.
Every enhanced female's biology responded to demonstrated dominance.
Suzuki was no exception.
And unlike Isabella, who channeled combat arousal into functional aggression, Suzuki was fighting it. Air Force discipline versus enhanced biology. Trying to suppress what her body was screaming for.
Losing.
"Efficient work," she said. Voice almost steady. Almost. There was a tremor underneath. "All targets neutralized. Zero friendly casualties. Textbook ambush."
Her eyes flicked to the blood on his hands. On his tactical gear. Her breathing changed—faster, shallower.
She was getting wet just looking at him. He could smell it. The sharp spike of arousal. The way her body was preparing itself despite her brain's desperate attempts at control.
"Ten days until Voss arrives." Suzuki's voice was slightly breathless. "We need to fortify every approach. Set ambush points on all likely routes. Prepare fallback positions—"
"We're not falling back."
Suzuki stopped. Stared. "Sir, eight hundred soldiers against our four hundred—"
"I don't care if she brings eight thousand." Gunner's voice was flat. Absolute. "She's coming for my children. She dies here. Her army dies here. Anyone who follows her dies here."
Her pupils dilated further. Her scent spiked so sharply it was like a physical presence.
She'd just watched him kill twelve people. Now he was promising to kill eight hundred more. Promising annihilation. Total war.
And her body was responding with desperate arousal instead of fear.
She looked away. Pressed her thighs together harder. "Yes, sir."
He kept walking.
Suzuki stood frozen, breathing hard, fighting the biological response screaming through her enhanced chemistry.
1312 HOURS — COMMAND CENTER
The strike team reported casualties: twelve enemy killed, three interrogated and executed, one released with a message. Zero friendly losses.
Tucker coordinated defensive fortifications based on the intelligence extracted from the scouts. Suzuki provided tactical overlays for ambush positions.
Gunner studied the maps. Voss's deployment. Eight hundred soldiers. Ten days.
"We need to hit her supply lines," he said. "Force her to divert resources to protect logistics instead of massing for assault."
"Agreed," Suzuki said. "But that requires identifying convoy routes and timing. We'd need—"
"You said you had contacts. Other settlements. People who've observed Voss's patterns."
"Yes, but communication is risky. Any signal could be intercepted."
"Risk it. We need those routes." Gunner turned to Rivera. "Get Suzuki access to our long-range comms. Encrypted channels. She coordinates with her contacts. I want convoy schedules within forty-eight hours."
"Sir," Rivera acknowledged.
Suzuki's eyes met Gunner's. Held for two seconds too long.
Her scent spiked. That same sharp arousal. Her thighs pressed together unconsciously.
She looked away. "I'll start reaching out to my network. See who's still operational."
She left. Moving fast. Like she was trying to outrun something.
1647 HOURS — CORRIDOR
Gunner passed Suzuki in the hallway between the command center and living quarters. Close quarters. No way to avoid proximity.
She pressed herself against the wall to let him pass. Too close. He could feel the heat radiating from her body. Could smell everything she was trying to suppress.
Their eyes met.
Suzuki held his gaze. Two seconds. Three.
Her pupils were blown so wide her eyes looked black. Her breathing was fast and shallow—she was almost panting. Sweat dampened her hairline despite the winter cold. Her face was flushed, neck and chest showing the telltale heat of arousal.
Her nipples were rock-hard beneath her tactical vest. Visible even through the layers. Her thighs were pressed together so tight she was almost trembling from the effort.
And her scent—desperate, needy arousal so sharp it filled the narrow corridor. She was soaking. Probably had been since watching him kill through the drone feed. Fighting it for hours while her body screamed for submission.
She looked away first. Broke eye contact. Pressed harder against the wall as he passed.
As he walked by, he could hear her heart racing. Could smell the spike in her arousal—so intense it was almost painful.
Her hand moved unconsciously to her throat. Touched the pulse point there. Her lips parted slightly.
Behind him, Isabella turned the corner. Saw the whole exchange. Saw Suzuki trembling against the wall, flushed and wet and fighting her biology with everything she had.
Smelled everything Suzuki was trying to suppress.
Isabella smirked.
Suzuki saw the expression. Understood immediately what it meant. Pack Second knew. Had probably known since the moment Suzuki walked through North Haven's gates. Was waiting. Watching. Letting biology do the work.
Suzuki fled down the corridor. Moving too fast. Almost running. Her ass shifted in her tactical pants with each desperate step.
Isabella watched her go. Waited until Suzuki disappeared around the corner.
"Twelve hours," she said to Gunner. Voice satisfied. "Maybe less. She's close to breaking. You could probably take her right now if you wanted."
"Not yet."
"Why not? She's ready. More than ready. She's desperate."
"Because I want her begging." Gunner's voice was quiet. "I want her so far past her control that she comes to me. Asks for it. Submits completely because her body won't give her a choice."
Isabella's smile widened. "You're cruel."
"I'm thorough."
"Good." Isabella stepped closer. Pressed against him. Her hand dropped to his cock—hard from Suzuki's scent, from the proximity, from the biological recognition that another enhanced female was close to surrender.
Isabella kissed him. Hard. Possessive. Claiming him in the corridor where Suzuki's scent still lingered.
Then she walked away, leaving Gunner alone with the smell of two enhanced females—one his, one almost his.
