Chapter Five #2
Enzo let out a ragged, frustrated breath. He reached out, his free hand coming up to cup the side of her neck, his thumb brushing over her pulse point. He looked at her with an expression of such raw, agonizing reluctance it made her heart stutter.
"My father received a call from Lorenzo this morning," Enzo confessed, his voice dropping into a low register.
"There is a logistical crisis at the southern ports in Naples.
A shipment route needs immediate restructuring, and Marco is tied up with the Calabrian negotiations.
I am the only one who can handle the port authority.
I have to go back to the estate. Tomorrow. "
Arielle’s breath hitched. The sudden, looming reality of his departure felt like a physical blow to her ribs. Tomorrow.
She had spent eight years perfectly content in her isolation, but the thought of returning to her empty apartment, of going back to the dusty logistics office without the promise of his arrogant grin waiting across the street, suddenly felt unbearable.
"I see," Arielle murmured, fighting to keep her expression neutral, masking the sharp sting of disappointment. She forced a polite, understanding smile. "Your family needs you. You have a business to run. I understand, Enzo."
"No. You don't understand," Enzo interrupted, his voice cracking with a sudden, desperate ferocity.
He didn't let her pull away. He stepped flush against her, wrapping both of his arms securely around her waist, pulling her tightly against his chest. He buried his face in the fragrant waves of her hair, inhaling the scent of her skin as if he were a drowning man taking his last breath.
"I cannot leave you here," Enzo whispered fiercely against her temple.
"Arielle, I swear to God, I have spent my entire life laughing at my brothers for losing their minds over women, and now I am standing here consumed by you.
I cannot function if I am a thousand miles away, wondering if you are safe, wondering if you are going to forget about me in this quiet town. "
Arielle’s heart hammered a violent rhythm against his chest. She brought her hands up, resting them flat against the lapels of his linen shirt. "Enzo..."
He pulled back just enough to look into her eyes, his handsome face stripped of all pride, leaving only a raw, unyielding plea.
"Come with me," Enzo begged, the words rushing out of him with charming, desperate urgency.
He framed her face in his hands. "Come to the Falco estate.
Just for a few weeks. Take a leave of absence from your office.
My family loves you. They would be ecstatic to have you.
Let me show you my home. Let me take you to dinner in Naples.
Please, Arielle. Let us give this a real chance.
Do not make me walk away from the best thing that has ever happened to me. "
Arielle stared up at him, her mind spinning.
Come to the Falco estate. She would be walking directly into the fortified heart of the most dangerous syndicate in the country. She would be eating at the table of the Don of Europe. It was reckless. It was a staggering, monumental risk.
But as she looked into Enzo’s eyes, seeing the devotion burning in their depths, she heard Vlad’s voice echoing in her mind. If he makes you want to live again, then he is a lucky bastard.
She didn't want to hide anymore. She wanted this man, and she wanted the life he was offering, whatever the cost.
"Okay," Arielle whispered, a soft, radiant smile breaking across her face.
Enzo froze, his eyes widening in sheer disbelief. "Okay? You will come?"
"I will come to Naples," she confirmed, her hands sliding up to rest against the back of his neck.
Enzo let out a sound that was half-laugh, half-prayer.
He crushed his mouth down onto hers, lifting her completely off her feet as he spun her in a tight circle on the rocky shore.
Arielle laughed into his mouth, wrapping her arms around his broad shoulders, feeling an overwhelming, soaring sense of freedom that she hadn't felt in nearly a decade.
The atmosphere inside the white-stucco villa an hour later was nothing short of euphoric.
When Enzo walked into the grand parlor, his hand laced tightly through Arielle’s, and announced that she would be accompanying them back to the Falco estate, the older generation practically exploded with joy.
Ana Falco gasped, dropping the silver tongs she had been using to serve pastries. She rushed across the terracotta floor, throwing her arms around Arielle in a crushing, maternal embrace.
"Oh, my sweet girl!" Ana beamed, her eyes shining with delight. "This is wonderful! The estate has been too quiet. We will have the guest suite in the southern wing prepared for you immediately. The gardens in Naples are breathtaking this time of year."
Salvatore let out a booming, triumphant roar of laughter, clapping Enzo on the shoulder with enough force to stagger a lesser man. "Excellent work, figlio mio! I was beginning to think you were going to mope all the way back to the city. We are thrilled to have you, Arielle."
Valentina sat in her velvet armchair, her hands resting elegantly on her silver-handled cane. The sharp, aristocratic matriarch did not cheer, but her eyes gleamed with a deep, profound satisfaction.
"You have made a very wise decision, Arielle," Valentina noted, her voice carrying a dry, knowing amusement. "Though I must warn you, the men in our family are insufferably protective. You will have to establish your boundaries quickly, or he will hover over you like a shadow."
"I am capable of managing him, Signora Valentina," Arielle replied smoothly, offering a confident, brilliant smile that made Enzo’s heart execute a dangerous flip in his chest.
"I have no doubt that you are," Valentina smirked, tapping her cane against the floor.
The logistics were finalized with syndicate efficiency. The armored motorcade would leave the coast the following afternoon. Enzo and Arielle had one final night in the sleepy town—one last evening of quiet anonymity before they stepped into the roaring fires of the Falco dynasty.
The moon hung high over the Ligurian Sea, casting a pale, silver glow through the open windows of Arielle’s apartment. The coastal breeze rustled the sheer white curtains, carrying the faint, rhythmic sound of the waves crashing against the distant seawall.
