Chapter Seven
The vibrant, chaotic energy of Naples wrapped around Enzo and Arielle like a warm, sun-drenched embrace.
The coastal city was a labyrinth of ancient stone, vibrant colors, and the ever-present, salt-laced breeze blowing off the Tyrrhenian Sea.
It was a city that beat with a loud, unapologetic heart, and for the first time in his life, Enzo Falco felt completely synchronized with it.
He walked beside Arielle down the bustling, narrow thoroughfare of Spaccanapoli, his hand laced securely through hers.
He had left his bespoke suits and syndicate responsibilities behind the iron gates of the estate, opting for a simple, unbuttoned linen shirt and trousers.
He didn't feel like the youngest son of the most powerful crime family in Europe.
He just felt like a man hopelessly consumed by the woman walking at his side.
"You are staring again, Enzo," Arielle noted, a soft, authentic laugh escaping her lips. She held a paper cone of warm, powdered sfogliatelle in her free hand, the sweet scent of ricotta and citrus mingling with the ocean air.
"I am mapping my territory," Enzo countered smoothly, lifting her hand to press a lingering, deliberate kiss to her knuckles.
His eyes danced with that effortless, devastating charm, but beneath the playful arrogance was a bedrock of devotion.
"I have to memorize every angle of your face in the sunlight. It is a matter of critical importance."
Arielle rolled her eyes, though the traitorous, brilliant flush creeping up her neck betrayed her.
She was dressed casually in a flowing, navy sundress that caught the sea breeze, her hair left down to cascade over her shoulders.
She looked breathtaking, completely at ease in the chaotic rhythm of the city.
They moved through the streets like any other couple in love.
It was the most natural thing in the world.
When they stopped at a hidden, shaded overlook that offered a sweeping view of Mount Vesuvius and the glittering bay, Enzo didn't hesitate.
He crowded her gently against the warm, sun-baked stone of the parapet, wrapping his arms around her waist to pull her flush against his chest.
Arielle sighed into his mouth as he kissed her. It was a slow, consuming, intoxicating kiss that tasted of espresso and powdered sugar. She tangled her fingers in the hair at the nape of his neck, anchoring herself to the solid, muscular heat of his frame.
As Enzo held her, feeling her heart race against his chest, a profound realization washed over him.
For years, he had stood on the balconies of the Falco estate, mocking his older brothers for the blinding devotion that had driven them to their knees.
He had watched Lorenzo shatter his own pride to win Roselia, and he had watched Marco offer to burn a continental treaty for Raisa. He had thought them insane.
Now, standing in the Neapolitan sun with Arielle in his arms, Enzo understood perfectly. He felt it in the very marrow of his bones. If anyone ever threatened the quiet, radiant peace in her eyes, he would burn the entire world to ash to protect her. He was completely, irrevocably hers.
Meanwhile, high above the city, the atmosphere inside the grand, sunlit conservatory of the Falco estate was buzzing with a vastly different kind of energy.
The room smelled of blooming jasmine and citrus. Ana and Valentina Falco sat on plush velvet settees, sipping their afternoon tea, while Salvatore, Lorenzo, and Marco occupied the leather armchairs nearby. But the true focal point of the room was the two women pacing the Persian rug.
Roselia Zanetti-Falco and Raisa Voronina-Falco were practically vibrating with a mixture of disbelief and sheer, unadulterated awe.
"I threw a left hook," Roselia was explaining, her hands animating the sheer speed of the memory.
The formidable Italian assassin, a woman who routinely dropped hardened enforcers in the dirt, looked absolutely bewildered.
"It was perfectly placed. The mechanics were flawless.
And she just... evaporated. She dropped her center of gravity so fast she practically bent the air around her. "
Raisa, the icy, Spetsnaz-trained Bratva princess, crossed her arms over her chest, her sea-green eyes wide with lingering shock.
"I flanked her on the blind side. It was a synchronized strike.
I had the angle. But she didn't block it.
She caught my momentum and used my own kinetic energy to sweep me.
I was on the canvas before my brain even registered the shift in gravity. "
Marco leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his jaw tight with fascination. "I saw. She pinned both of you. At the same time."
"In one fluid motion," Roselia confirmed, sinking onto the edge of the sofa next to Lorenzo. "Honestly, Lorenzo, I am not convinced the woman is human. She flows like water. She moves like the wind. She is one step above a shadow ninja. It was something supernatural."
Lorenzo wrapped his arm possessively around his wife’s waist, a deep, rumbling chuckle vibrating in his chest. "Perhaps Enzo finally found an angel to match his arrogance."
"An angel who can snap a man's neck with her bare hands," Salvatore corrected, his booming voice echoing with profound respect. The patriarch swirled the amber liquid in his glass, his sharp eyes crinkling. "She is exceptional. Extraordinary."
"She is magnificent," Valentina agreed, tapping her silver-handled cane against the marble tiles.
The sharp-eyed matriarch looked incredibly smug.
"Enzo believed he would be the last bachelor standing.
It is only fitting that the woman who conquered him can also conquer the finest warriors in our syndicate. "
Raisa nodded, a fierce, competitive respect shining in her eyes. "She did not even break a sweat. Arielle is a masterpiece of close-quarters combat. Enzo is vastly outmatched."
The family dissolved into a chorus of delighted, insufferable laughter. They were thrilled. The Falco dynasty prized strength above all else, and the quiet, beautiful woman Enzo had brought into their fortress possessed a lethality that commanded their reverence.
It was two days later when the crushing reality of the Falco estate finally cornered Arielle.
The golden hour was descending over the Amalfi coast, casting long, fiery shadows across the sprawling guest suite in the southern wing. Arielle paced the length of the plush, hand-woven rug, her bare feet silent against the floorboards.
She was overwhelmed. It was a tide of emotion.
She was hopelessly in love with Enzo. She liked his family—she genuinely, deeply liked the chaotic, boisterous warmth of Ana and Salvatore, and she respected the sharp, unyielding intellect of Valentina.
She could look at Enzo and seriously, vividly see a future.
She could see herself staying in these sun-drenched rooms for the rest of her life.
And she was terrified.
I have to tell him, she thought, rubbing her hands over her face, her chest heaving with anxiety. I cannot let this go any further without telling him who I am. I cannot lie to him anymore.
The mahogany door of the suite clicked open.
Enzo stepped into the room, his eyes instantly tracking her frantic, caged-animal pacing. He discarded his suit jacket onto a nearby chair, his brow furrowing with deep, protective concern.
"You are wearing a trench into the floorboards, Ari," Enzo murmured, closing the distance between them. He reached out, gently catching her upper arms to halt her pacing. "What is wrong? Your heart is racing."
Arielle looked up at him, her eyes swimming with a vulnerability she rarely let surface. She opened her mouth, but the words tangled in her throat.
Enzo’s expression softened. He had been observing her meticulously for days. He saw the brilliant, beautiful woman she was, but he also saw the invisible, iron-clad walls she erected.
"Talk to me," Enzo coaxed, his voice dropping into a low, velvet whisper.
He slid his hands down her arms, lacing his fingers through hers.
"I have been watching you, Ari. You sit at the dining table, and you banter with Lorenzo and Marco as if you have known them for twenty years.
You are completely, naturally comfortable with the most men in this syndicate.
But the second Roselia or Raisa walk into the room... "
He paused, searching her eyes. "You freeze. You are polite, but you are miles away. They adore you, Arielle. They are in awe of you. Yet you build a fortress whenever they try to get close. Why are you so wary of them?"
Arielle’s breath hitched. The question struck the very core of her trauma, the raw, bleeding wound she had kept hidden for eight years.
She looked down at their joined hands, her vision blurring as the tears she had fought so hard to suppress finally welled over her lashes.
"I don't have a good history with sisters, Enzo," Arielle whispered, her voice cracking, fragile and broken in the quiet room. "Or with sisterhood."
Enzo’s chest physically ached at the sound of her pain. He didn't push. He simply squeezed her hands, anchoring her.
"I told you I grew up with four older brothers," Arielle continued, the tears spilling down her cheeks.
"They were formidable. They were overprotective, heavy-handed, and fiercely loyal.
So when I look at Lorenzo and Marco, I understand them perfectly.
I am fluent in the language of arrogant, protective men. They feel safe to me."
She took a ragged, shuddering breath, forcing herself to look up into his eyes.
