Chapter Eight #2
The table quieted slightly, their collective attention shifting to her. Arielle had been remarkably guarded about her past, and any detail she offered was immediately met with rapt, polite attention.
"Four brothers," Salvatore chuckled, leaning forward. "That is a formidable household. It must have been loud."
"It was chaos," Arielle smiled softly, providing the bare bones of her history while shielding the blood.
"For generations, my family only produced boys.
When I finally arrived, it was quite the celebration.
My grandfather passed away years ago, so the responsibility of managing the madness fell to my father.
He is in the family business, so he was uniquely equipped to keep a house full of wild men in line. "
Lorenzo’s analytical eyes tracked her expression. The Don of the Falcons rested his forearms on the table. He was a man who traded on awareness, and while he adored the woman who had captured his brother's heart, his instincts were constantly evaluating the perimeter.
"The family business?" Lorenzo murmured smoothly, his tone laced with polite, conversational curiosity, probing gently. "What industry does your family operate in, Arielle? We would be honored to meet them someday."
Arielle’s tactical mind registered the subtle, invisible probe.
If her brothers ever actually walked through the iron gates of the Falco estate, it wouldn't start a war—the Gambrellis and Falcos were securely bridged by their mutual Bratva alliances—but it would certainly shatter the quiet, civilian illusion she was currently maintaining.
"Logistics and shipping, primarily," Arielle deflected smoothly, keeping her posture relaxed as she swirled the wine in her glass. "But they are notoriously busy."
Marco grinned, leaning back in his chair and wrapping an arm around Raisa’s shoulders. "Four overprotective brothers. That is a gauntlet, Enzo. Tell me, Arielle, would your brothers approve of our youngest Falco?"
Arielle looked at Enzo. The youngest Falco was staring at her, holding his breath, genuinely invested in the answer.
Arielle let out a sharp, musical laugh. "Absolutely not. They would hate him on principle."
Enzo’s jaw dropped. He placed a hand over his heart in a display of profound, dramatic agony. "Excuse me? What could they possibly object to? I am charming, successful, and devastatingly well-mannered."
"You are a man, Enzo," Arielle reasoned playfully, bumping her shoulder against his. "And you are holding my hand. In their eyes, that makes you an immediate, irredeemable threat."
Raisa laughed, a beautiful, rich sound that broke her usual icy Spetsnaz composure. The Bratva princess leaned across the table, her sea-green eyes locking onto Arielle’s with a profound, sisterly understanding.
"They sound exactly like Sasha and Dmitri," Raisa noted, her Russian accent curling warmly around the words.
"My brothers treated Marco like a terminal disease when he first arrived in Moscow.
They were terrified of a political alliance overshadowing my life.
To them, no man on earth was fit to breathe the same air as me, let alone marry me. "
Marco puffed his chest out slightly, a cocky, arrogant smirk spreading across his face. "Yet I walked into their stronghold and conquered them."
Raisa rolled her eyes, though she reached up to gently touch Marco’s jaw.
"You survived them, Italian. Barely. And it wasn't your arrogance that won their favor.
Once they saw the devotion—once they realized you looked at me like I hung the moon—they relented.
Unyielding devotion is the only currency ruthless brothers respect. "
"Exactly," Arielle agreed softly, her eyes softening as she looked at Enzo.
Ana clasped her hands together, radiating a maternal, breathless excitement. She looked at Arielle, her eyes wide. "Have you told them about Enzo? Does your family know?"
Arielle didn't hesitate. She didn't need to lie. "My brothers know. I mentioned him to them."
Beside her, Enzo went perfectly, completely still.
The playful, arrogant banter instantly evaporated from his features. He turned his head slowly to look at her, his eyes wide with a sudden, overwhelming vulnerability and deep pride.
"You told your brothers about me?" Enzo asked, his voice dropping to a raw, hushed whisper that barely carried over the sound of the ocean waves. "When did you do that?"
Arielle offered a soft, authentic smile, unbothered by the silence that had fallen over the table. "A few days after the alleyway. When we were still on the coast."
Enzo’s breath visibly hitched. "The first week we met?"
"Yes," Arielle confirmed gently, reaching out to lace her fingers securely through his. "I did. I mentioned you."
The weight of her admission crashed into Enzo’s chest with the force of a physical blow.
He was profoundly humbled. He had spent the first week on the coast terrified that he was pushing too hard, terrified that the beautiful, Amazon goddess would vanish back into the shadows and forget him. He had thought he was the only one falling at an uncontrolled velocity.
But she had called her brothers. Women with fiercely overprotective families did not call their brothers to discuss a fleeting vacation romance.
They only made that call when they saw a future.
If she had mentioned him that early, it meant she had liked him just as much as he liked her, and had been thinking about building a life with him just as quickly.
Enzo looked down at their joined hands, and then back up into her radiant eyes. A look of such fierce, unyielding devotion washed over his face that Marco and Lorenzo simultaneously averted their gazes, recognizing the sacred, private weight of the moment.
Enzo lifted her hand, pressing a long, fervent kiss to her knuckles, oblivious to the apex predators sitting around them. It was a beautiful, anchoring moment, shining brightly against the storm clouds that were quietly gathering across the ocean.
