Chapter Nine #2
Enzo’s sprawling suite in the southern wing was bathed in the soft, ambient light of the moon reflecting off the sea. The French doors were open, letting the cool coastal breeze rustle the velvet drapes.
Enzo sat on the edge of the large, four-poster bed, watching Arielle. She had showered, washing the scent of gunpowder from her skin, and was now dressed in a soft, silk robe. She stood by the open doors, her arms wrapped tightly around her waist, staring out into the darkness.
Enzo stood up, crossing the plush carpet to step up behind her. He didn't ask her about the syndicates, or the northern territories, or the logistics of her brothers' empire. He simply wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her back against the solid heat of his chest.
"You walked away from it," Enzo murmured gently, resting his chin on the top of her head. "You are the daughter of a dynasty. You have the skills of a master assassin. But you scrubbed your name, moved to the coast, and pretended to be invisible. Why, Ari?"
Arielle leaned her head back against his shoulder, letting out a ragged, trembling sigh. The armor she had worn at the docks dissolved, leaving behind a profound, aching vulnerability.
"Because I couldn't breathe in the blood anymore," Arielle confessed, her voice fragile in the quiet room.
She turned in his arms, looking up into his searching eyes. She needed to give him the entire truth, no matter how much it broke her own heart to speak the words aloud.
"I told you I had a sister," Arielle whispered, her hands coming up to rest flat against his chest. "Her name was Marisella.
She was older than me. But she was different.
In our family, the men are the warriors.
When Marisella was born, she was the only girl.
She was treated like a delicate, fragile princess.
She was groomed for it. She was expected to grow up, be beautiful, and marry for a political or wealthy alliance to secure our borders. "
Enzo frowned, his thumb gently stroking her cheek as he listened to the grief lacing her tone.
"But then I was born," Arielle continued, a bitter, tragic smile touching her lips.
"I was the youngest. The baby of the family.
And my parents... my brothers... they doted on me infinitely more.
They let me run wild. They let me train in the rings, they let me learn how to fight, they let me be unapologetically free.
I was not groomed for a transaction. I was allowed to be myself. "
Arielle’s voice began to tremble, the ghosts of her past clawing their way to the surface.
"Marisella hated it. She hated me for the freedom I had, and she resented the attention I received. Instead of treating me as a younger sister, she became consumed by envy. The jealousy festered inside her until it became a pure, toxic hatred."
Enzo’s grip on her waist tightened, a protective anger flaring in his chest as he anticipated the ending of the story.
"She betrayed us," Arielle choked out, a tear finally breaking free to slide down her cheek.
"She struck a deal with a rival faction.
She gave them the security codes, with the explicit intention of either having me killed or taken hostage.
When the ambush happened... it was chaos. Vlad stepped in front of me."
Enzo’s breath caught. He knew Vlad was the volatile, fiercely overprotective fourth brother.
"Marisella had a gun," Arielle wept, her shoulders shaking. "She shot Vlad. Her own brother. Just to destroy me. He fell, and she raised the weapon to take a second shot at him."
Arielle closed her eyes, the horrifying, blinding memory playing behind her eyelids. "I didn't have a choice, Enzo. I had to stop her. I drew my weapon, and I shot my own sister to save my brother's life."
"God, Ari," Enzo breathed, wrapping his arms fully around her, pulling her tightly against him. He kissed the top of her head, his heart breaking for the agonizing choice she had been forced to make.
"Vlad slipped into a coma," she continued, her voice muffled against his shirt. "Marisella survived the gunshot. She recovered physically, but her mind was gone. The hatred had completely hollowed her out. Weeks went by. And then... the culmination of it all."
She pulled back just enough to look at him, her eyes shattered into a thousand pieces.
"The exact same day Vlad finally woke from his coma," Arielle whispered, the tragedy of it echoing in the quiet room. "Marisella took her own life."
Enzo squeezed his eyes shut, an agonizing silence falling over the bedroom.
"It destroyed us," Arielle sobbed quietly. "My parents blamed themselves for not noticing her downward spiral, for pushing her into a corner she didn't want to be in. My brothers blamed themselves for not spending enough time with her, for blinding themselves with their overprotectiveness of me."
Enzo lifted his hands, gently framing her tear-stained face. He looked deep into her sorrowful eyes, recognizing the crushing weight she carried on her own shoulders.
"And what did you blame yourself for, Ari?" Enzo asked, his voice a soft, velvet hum of profound compassion.
Arielle looked up at him, her chest heaving as she voiced the darkest, most agonizing secret she possessed.
"For being born."
The poignant, devastating way the words left her lips physically broke Enzo’s heart. He felt a sharp, agonizing twist in his ribs. The beautiful, brilliant, woman in his arms had spent eight years punishing herself for simply existing.
"No," Enzo vowed, his voice dropping into a fierce register that vibrated with unwavering devotion. He wiped the tears from her cheeks with his thumbs. "Never. Do you hear me? You are a miracle. You are the greatest thing that has ever happened to this earth, and you are the center of my universe."
He pulled her forcefully against his chest, wrapping his large, muscular frame around her, shielding her from the ghosts of her past. He buried his face in the curve of her neck, inhaling the sweet scent of her skin.
"I will spend the rest of my natural life proving it to you," Enzo swore softly against her throat, pressing a long, fervent kiss to her pulse point.
"I am going to cherish you. I am going to protect you from the shadows, and I am going to make sure that for as long as you are breathing, you only ever feel joy in my arms."
Arielle let out a ragged, shuddering breath, her hands clinging tightly to the fabric of his shirt. She leaned into his strength, letting the warmth of his body melt the ice that had surrounded her heart for nearly a decade.
Enzo folded her deeper into his embrace, holding her in the quiet, moonlit sanctuary of his home.
He cherished the peace they had found together, and as he held the woman he loved, he felt an overwhelming gratitude that the quiet accountant he had chased down a coastal street was not a civilian at all, but a queen perfectly forged to stand by his side.
