CHAPTER SEVEN #2
The affirmation settled heavily. Brynn stepped closer.
"Do you still consent to discipline for those three choices?"
"Yes."
"What word ends everything?"
"Enough."
"What does yellow mean?"
"Pause or change what is happening."
"Red?"
"Stop immediately."
"Can you use them while you are being disciplined?"
"Yes."
"Can you use them afterward?"
Dana frowned slightly. Brynn did not move on.
"Yes. I can use them afterward."
"If I touch you in a way you do not want?"
"I tell you."
"If you become angry?"
"I tell you."
"If you decide halfway through that you no longer believe this is right?"
"I say enough."
Brynn lifted one hand and placed it against Dana's cheek.
"You are not required to endure anything to prove you can submit."
"I know."
"You do not earn my care through pain."
Dana's throat tightened. "I know."
"You will receive it regardless of how this ends."
The promise loosened the last fear inside her. Dana turned her face slightly into Brynn's palm.
"Color?"
"Green."
Brynn withdrew her hand. "Remove the robe." Dana untied it. The cotton slid from her shoulders and fell into her hands. She folded it and placed it over the back of the sofa without being instructed. Brynn noticed.
"Stand in front of the chair."
Dana obeyed. The chair faced the room rather than the fire. Its arms were wide, its seat firm. Brynn moved behind it and rested both hands along the wooden back.
"You expected me to put you over my knee," she said.
Dana's face warmed. "Yes."
"Would you prefer that?"
The question required honesty rather than dignity. "Yes." Brynn's expression changed, not with amusement but consideration.
"My injury prevents me from supporting your weight safely for long."
Concern replaced disappointment. "Then we should not."
"No. I can sit while you position yourself across my lap with your weight supported by the chair arm and your feet on the floor. If my pain changes, I will tell you."
"You promised."
"I remember."
Dana looked at the chair. The reality of what she had requested sharpened. Brynn sat carefully and adjusted herself until her injured side was protected. She extended one hand toward Dana.
"Come here."
Dana took it. Brynn guided her to stand beside the chair.
"I am going to raise your sleep shirt. Your underwear will remain in place unless you ask otherwise. Nothing about this will become sexual."
"Yes."
"Is that what you want?"
Dana considered the question. "Raise the shirt.
Leave the underwear." Brynn nodded. "Across my lap.
" Dana's breathing changed. She placed one hand on the chair arm and lowered herself carefully.
Brynn guided her, ensuring that most of Dana's weight rested against the broad wooden arm and her own braced legs rather than the injured side.
The position was intimate despite the layers of clothing.
Dana's upper body rested against the chair arm.
Her feet remained on the floor. Brynn's thigh supported her hips while one arm settled across Dana's waist. The first sensation was not embarrassment. It was trust.
Dana could not see Brynn's face. She could feel the warmth of her body and the secure weight of the arm holding her in place. Brynn lifted the hem of the sleep shirt and folded it above Dana's waist. Cool air touched her lower back. Her hand rested over Dana's underwear. Dana's muscles tightened.
"Breathe."
She inhaled. Brynn's palm moved once over the fabric, slow and grounding rather than suggestive.
"Color?"
"Green."
"We are addressing three violations. You will name each one before its consequence."
Dana gripped the chair arm.
"How many?"
"I will decide. You may ask me to tell you."
"Tell me."
"Six for each offense."
Eighteen. The number was enough to feel real without becoming frightening. Dana nodded.
"Use words."
"Yes. Six for each."
"The first offense?"
"I skipped lunch."
"Why?"
"The operation was active."
"That explains the circumstances."
Dana closed her eyes. "I decided the operation mattered and my body did not." Brynn's arm tightened around her waist. "That is the violation."
"Yes."
The first strike landed across the center of Dana's covered backside. The sound was sharper than the pain. Dana inhaled. Brynn waited. "Color?"
"Green."
The second was firmer. Heat spread beneath the fabric. The third landed. Dana's fingers tightened around the chair. Brynn maintained a slow rhythm, allowing each sensation to settle before the next impact. Four. Five. Six. Her hand returned to Dana's lower back.
"First offense complete."
The words produced an unexpected wave of relief. Not absolution. Completion. Dana breathed against the chair arm.
"What was the second offense?"
"I skipped dinner."
"Why?"
"I told myself I could not eat while people were missing."
"Was that true?"
Dana considered it. "No."
"What was true?"
"I did not want to feel my own hunger while other people were suffering."
Brynn's hand moved slowly over her back. "Did your hunger help them?"
"No."
"Did weakening yourself improve your decisions?"
"No."
"Then say what you should have done."
"I should have eaten when food was brought to me."
"Yes."
The next strike landed lower than the first set. Dana jolted. Brynn's arm held her securely but did not restrain her from moving away. Two. Three. The heat sharpened into a sustained ache. Dana's breath became unsteady.
"Color?"
"Green."
The fourth strike came after a longer pause. Tears gathered, not from the intensity alone but from the vulnerability of being corrected without being condemned. Five. Six. Brynn stopped. Her palm covered the warmed area through the fabric, applying gentle pressure.
"Second offense complete."
Dana exhaled. One remained. Brynn allowed the silence to lengthen.
"What was the third offense?"
"I concealed my exhaustion."
"How?"
"I told everyone I was functioning. I refused to say I had barely slept. I made Monica and the physician argue with me before I acknowledged what was happening."
"And with me?"
Dana's throat tightened. "I made you ask repeatedly. I expected you to know."
"I did know."
"That does not make it fair."
"No. Why did you hide it?"
"Because needing rest felt weak."
"Anything else?"
"Because if I admitted I was unraveling after the attack, I was afraid someone would decide I was no longer capable of serving."
Brynn's arm tightened.
"Was I going to take the office from you?"
"No."
"Was Monica?"
"No."
"Your physician?"
"No."
"Then who were you hiding from?"
Dana closed her eyes. "Myself." Brynn remained silent for several breaths.
"When you lie about exhaustion, you take away my ability to care for you honestly. You also turn your body into an enemy you believe you must defeat. This final consequence is for the concealment, not the exhaustion."
"Yes."
"Not the fear."
"Yes."
"Not the nightmares."
"Yes."
"Color?"
"Green."
The first strike of the final set landed with greater firmness.
Dana gasped. Brynn waited until she settled.
Two. The heat from the earlier strikes intensified beneath the new impact.
Three. A tear slipped from Dana's eye and fell against the chair.
Four. Her body tensed. Brynn's hand rested on her back.
"Breathe." Dana forced air into her lungs.
"Color?"
"Green."
Brynn did not continue immediately. "You may ask for yellow. You do not need to complete the count."
"I know."
"What do you need?"
Dana listened to her own breathing. "Finish." Brynn's hand remained still. "Is that pride?"
"No. I want the rule to remain real."
Brynn accepted the answer. Five. The final strike landed with deliberate precision. Dana cried out softly. Then it was over. Brynn's hand covered the heated skin through the fabric.
"Third offense complete."
Dana sagged against the chair arm. The words moved through her body like the release of a knot held too long. Brynn lowered the sleep shirt into place but did not ask Dana to rise. She rubbed slow circles over Dana's lower back.
"You completed eighteen. The violations are addressed."
Dana's breath trembled.
"You will still eat dinner."
"Yes."
"You will tell me when you are exhausted."
"Yes."
"You will not interpret discipline as permission to repeat the behavior."
"No."
Brynn's hand stilled. Dana heard the problem. "No," she corrected. "I will not repeat it because I expect discipline."
"Good."
Approval warmed her more deeply than the impacts had. Brynn shifted slightly. Pain crossed her breathing. Dana immediately lifted her head. "Your side."
"Three."
"You said two before."
"It changed."
"Then let me up."
Brynn did not argue. She guided Dana carefully to her feet.
The movement caused the heated skin to tighten beneath her underwear.
Dana inhaled sharply but remained steady.
Brynn stayed seated for several seconds, one hand pressed lightly against her left side.
Concern surged through Dana. She reached for her.
Brynn caught her hand. "Not yet. You are not responsible for fixing my discomfort. "
"You told me you would not conceal pain."
"I told you the moment it changed."
Dana looked at Brynn's face. Her color remained good. Her breathing was controlled. The pain did not appear severe.
"What do you need?" Dana asked.
The reversal mattered. Brynn considered it.
"Stand beside me while I breathe." Dana did.
She did not summon the physician, issue an order, or kneel to inspect an injury she could not treat.
She remained close without taking over. After a minute, Brynn lowered her hand.
"Two again." Dana released a breath. "Thank you for telling me.
" Brynn's expression softened. "Now come here.
" She opened her arms. Dana stepped between them.
Brynn wrapped her arms around Dana's waist and rested her cheek against Dana's stomach.
The position startled her. Brynn remained seated while Dana stood over her, yet the embrace contained no reversal of the authority they had chosen. Only tenderness.
Dana placed both hands in Brynn's hair.
"Are we finished?"
