CHAPTER ELEVEN #3
I recognize the technique. Dana smiled. Will I see you privately this week?
Friday. Four days. The answer felt impossibly distant.
Why Friday? Because we agreed to keep the first week professionally focused.
I dislike our agreement. I know. Could we revise it?
No. The refusal produced irritation and affection in equal measure.
Dana wrote: You are enjoying this. Less than you think.
That surprised her. Why? Because I wanted to touch you today too.
Dana's pulse changed. She stared at the screen.
Brynn continued: In the garage. In the service corridor.
When you thanked me after the movement. What did you want to do? The answer did not arrive immediately.
Dana imagined Brynn considering whether to encourage desire they could not act upon until Friday.
Finally: Put my hand against the back of your neck and tell you that you had done well.
The words moved through Dana with the force of touch.
She closed her eyes. You could have told me professionally.
You had not done well initially. Dana opened her eyes.
I corrected myself. You did. Then? Then you handled the rest well.
Dana smiled despite herself. Good? Yes. The word felt different through the screen but still carried the familiar warmth of approval.
Thank you. You are welcome. Dana hesitated.
Was the false alarm difficult for you? Yes.
Because of the attack? Yes. Did you doubt the detail? No.
The answer mattered. Did you doubt me? A longer pause.
I expected you to argue. I did argue. Briefly.
I am improving. Yes. Dana rested the phone against her knee.
She wanted to ask whether Brynn had been afraid and whether standing close to Dana again had reopened something the medical office could not measure.
Instead, she asked: What do you need tonight?
The response took nearly a minute. To know you are safe and that I do not need to remain awake to keep it true.
Dana's throat tightened. I am in the residence.
The detail is posted. The building is secure.
I am not planning an unscheduled movement.
That helps. Dana smiled. Sleep, Brynn. The reply came quickly. That sounded commanding.
Concern expressed efficiently. Acceptable. Dana placed the phone beside her pillow. The room felt less empty.
* * *
The next three days established the rhythm of their divided lives.
Brynn protected Dana in public. Dana surrendered to no one during official hours.
They exchanged formal titles, brief instructions, and professional acknowledgments.
Brynn opened doors, cleared routes, managed movements, and corrected protective problems without visible hesitation.
Dana followed instructions more quickly.
Not perfectly. Quickly enough that the detail began trusting her differently.
At night, Dana and Brynn communicated through personal messages after both had completed official responsibilities.
They discussed meals, sleep, pain, and the emotional strain of standing close while pretending distance came naturally.
They did not enter the dynamic. They did not meet privately.
They kept the agreement. By Friday evening, Dana felt as though every nerve in her body had become aware of the clock.
Brynn's shift ended at six thirty. Dana's last meeting concluded at six forty-two.
Dinner appeared in the residence at seven.
Dana ate all of it. At seven fifty-eight, a quiet knock sounded at the upstairs sitting-room door.
Dana stood. "Come in." Brynn entered carrying an overnight bag.
She had changed out of her suit. She wore dark jeans and a black sweater, her hair loose around her shoulders.
The sight of her in private clothing after five days of professional restraint made Dana's breath catch. Brynn closed the door.
For several seconds, neither woman moved. The presidential seal remained attached to Dana's blouse. The office was still present. Brynn set down the bag. "How are you?"
"Impatient. Tired. Lonely."
Brynn's expression softened. "I stood beside you all week."
"That was not the same."
"No."
Dana looked toward the door. "Did anyone notice anything?"
"No."
"Not even Lacey?"
"She noticed that you followed extraction instructions faster."
"That could be attributed to growth."
"It was."
"Monica?"
"Monica notices weather systems before they form. She knows we struggled with the distance."
Dana nodded. Brynn approached slowly and stopped an arm's length away. "Did the secrecy make you doubt me?"
"For moments."
"Did you believe the doubt?"
"No."
"What did you do with it?"
"Named it. Waited. Did not use the office to create access."
Approval warmed Brynn's eyes. "Good." Dana felt the word everywhere she had wanted Brynn to touch her during the week. Brynn saw the response. "You missed that."
"Yes."
"What else did you miss?"
"Your hand in my hair. Kneeling. Being touched without having to decide how. You."
The final answer removed the last formality from the room.
Brynn reached for Dana's face. Dana leaned into her palm before contact was complete.
Brynn kissed her. The kiss contained five days of restraint.
Dana gripped the front of Brynn's sweater and pulled her closer.
Brynn allowed the urgency for several seconds, then caught Dana's wrists.
The gesture immediately changed the balance.
Dana's breathing deepened. Brynn ended the kiss.
"Not yet." Dana stared at her. "You came here to make me wait? "
"I came here to make certain you are choosing the dynamic rather than reacting to deprivation."
"I choose it."
"Why?"
"Because I want you."
"That was true all week."
Dana forced herself to slow down. "Because I need the quiet.
Because I want the professional distance to end deliberately rather than dissolve because we are alone.
" Brynn's grip loosened. "Good." Dana looked down at the presidential pin.
Brynn did not touch it. The choice remained Dana's.
She unfastened the seal and placed it on the side table.
"The office is outside."
Brynn's authority settled around them. "Come here." Dana stepped forward. Brynn placed one hand against the back of her neck. The touch she had withheld all week finally arrived. Dana closed her eyes.
"Open."
She obeyed.
"You followed instructions better this week," Brynn said.
"Yes."
"You still questioned the fire evacuation."
"Yes."
"Was that disobedience?"
"Professionally, yes."
"Does it belong to me privately?"
"No."
Approval moved through Brynn's expression. "You understand."
"Yes."
Brynn's thumb pressed lightly at the base of Dana's skull. "Then tonight is not punishment. It is not reward for professional obedience."
"No."
"What is it?"
Dana held her gaze. "Something we both want.
" Brynn kissed her once, then stepped back.
"Kneel." Dana lowered herself to the cushion already waiting on the carpet.
She had not noticed it when Brynn entered.
The preparation warmed her. Brynn sat on the sofa.
"Come closer." Dana shifted between her knees.
Brynn placed one hand in her hair. Five days of public distance collapsed into the pressure of those fingers. Dana exhaled.
"What do you need first?" Brynn asked.
"To be held here. No sex yet."
Brynn's hand moved slowly through her hair.
Dana rested her forehead against Brynn's thigh.
They remained that way without speaking.
The week receded. The alarms, meetings, motorcades, cameras, staff, and constant need for visible restraint settled outside the room.
Dana did not disappear. She arrived more fully.
After several minutes, Brynn touched her cheek. "Look at me. How do you feel?"
"Safe. Loved."
Brynn's expression softened. "You are." Dana leaned into her palm.
"And you?" Brynn considered the answer. "Home.
" The word struck deeper than any command.
Dana rose from her knees only when Brynn guided her.
They sat together on the sofa. Brynn drew her close, and Dana rested against her chest. No urgency remained.
Desire waited beneath the quiet, patient enough to become whatever they chose next.
For the first time since Brynn returned to the primary detail, Dana understood that the professional distance had not weakened their relationship.
It had protected it. The Service knew an agent had resumed her post. It knew the president trusted her.
It knew nothing about the woman kneeling behind a locked door, the hand in her hair, or the word home spoken where no microphone could reach it. That secret belonged to them.
