Chapter 28 #2
“We’re actually worried about people thinking we’re rushing it.” Walker draws me closer to him. I can’t help but think it’s none of their damn business.
“Finding your heart’s counterpoint is the most important thing.
Some people take a lifetime. Some of us, we know when we know.
We knew when we met her. She’s your soulmate.
” I fight the urge to cry at Ian’s thoughtful words.
He loves his family and will do anything to help or support them.
I get the feeling no one in this family would complain about us marrying.
“Thank you, Dad.” Walker smiles at me. “We’re going to call the rest. I wanted you to be first. I needed you both to know I’m going to be fine. Reese is my saving grace.”
“I love you,” I whisper but there’s no escaping Cynthia.
“You are too cute.” She sighs. “Congratulations. We love you both.”
“We’ll talk later. Love y’all,” Walker says before ending his call. He kisses me and immediately dials Riley. I adore how excited he is. My face is numb from smiling.
“What’s up?” Riley answers after two rings. I swear they have each other on speed dial.
“Just checking in. How’s our girl?” Walker twirls my hair around his finger, giving me goosebumps.
“She’s not feeling so great. He’s kickin’ her ass.” Riley sighs heavily. “She says I worry too much.”
“I’ll come see her next week,” I shout.
“Hello, my love. Why the hell are you still with asshat?” Riley chuckles, and Walker flips off the phone. I giggle, loving their banter.
“Fuck you.” Walker smirks. “We wanted to let you know she said yes.”
“Seriously? Like, y’all are engaged?” Riley exclaims, and a scream in the background makes us laugh. “Why would you marry him? Oh, yeah. I was taken.” Walker narrows his eyes, and I giggle.
“Congratulations!” Ava yells through the phone. “When is the big day? Please, do it before my ass gets any bigger.”
“Your ass is fine, babe.” We can hear him kiss her. “All jokes aside, we’re happy for you guys. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you but Walker’s a helluva man. And I hope you know by now, we love you. You two were made for each other.”
My lip quivers when Riley’s words take me by surprise. Walker runs his hand up my back when he notices I’m crying.
“Aww, baby. I love you.” He wraps his hand around my neck, pulling to him. He places a soft kiss on my lips, making my heart pound wildly. “All right, guys. We need to call her mom.”
“Text me, Reese,” Ava says.
“Promise. Love y’all.”
“We love you,” Ava and Riley say and end the call. Walker reaches me the phone.
“Here goes nothing.” My stomach lurches. I dial my Mom’s number, knowing she’ll answer on the first ring because it’s Walker’s number.
“Hello,” she answers the phone, dripping kindness.
“It’s me, Mom. How are you?”
“Oh, I thought it was your hunky man calling me.” She honestly sounds disappointed. I roll my eyes when Walker laughs.
“I’m here also, Danielle.” Walker’s deep growl makes me squirm. I peek up at him to find hooded eyes. His nostrils flare when I follow his gaze to my exposed breast. I smile, biting my lip. Walker reaches up, rubbing his finger over it.
“Someone care to explain what’s going on?” She breathes heavily.
“I asked your amazing daughter to be my wife, and she agreed.” Walker’s smile is life. He’s beyond a dream and he’s mine.
“Congratulations. It’s fast or are you…?”
My mouth drops, eyes wide. She thinks I’m pregnant. “Oh, gosh. No, Mom.” Walker’s brows pull together as I roll my eyes heavenly. “I’m not pregnant.”
“From your lips to God’s ears,” Walker says, tweaking my side with a huge ass grin.
“Dude, not cool.” I shake my head. “We haven’t made any plans, just wanted you to know.”
“You know, I think it’s wonderful. He’s an amazing man and will treat you well.” She loves Walker. She does. It’s her love for me I doubt.
“All right, Mom. We’re just getting in from work. I’ll call you later. Love you.” I hurry her off the phone, so I can do something with this hard cock Walker’s sporting since he won’t stop ogling my boobs.
“Love you. Congratulations,” she adds before hanging up.
“That was easy. I expected her to flip or go on a tangent of it being too soon.” He smiles as I stand.
“She’s been wanting me married long enough. I’m sure she’s thrilled it’s happening.” I reach under my skirt, dragging my panties down my thighs and off my feet. Heat radiates from me. His gaze burns into me as he watches my every move.
“What do you have in mind, Red?” Walker fists his cock, watching me. I shimmy my skirt up. Taking his belt in my hand, I pull it loose. With his help, we make quick work of his pants, and his cock springs free.
I sink my teeth into my lip and I straddle him, sinking down as his hands find my ass. “I’m thinking something like this might be nice.”
“Definitely nice.” He groans as I sway my hips.
“Fuck.” His words are drawn out, stirring an intense pang in my belly.
I needed him, this. To feel close to him, his need for me.
Pitching my hips as I ride him, his hands wander my body.
Settling into the small of my back, he pushes me to grind on him until we detonate.
His head rests against mine, our breathing ragged. “Damn, girl. You’re so unexpected.”
“I know the feeling, Walker.”
He lifts my chin, moving the pieces of hair sticking to my face, gazing at me. “I love you.”
He smashes his mouth to mine and I’m lost in him.
I sit in my Jeep, listing every pro and con in the book to come up with a reason to not go in here. I can’t help it. I keep getting the worst pangs of dread when I think about doing this. A knock on the window makes me jump out of my skin.
“Shit!” Alden stands beside the car, his cheeks blown up like a blowfish to keep from laughing. “Fuck you.”
“Sorry, I thought you saw me and was making me knock.” He shrugs with a chuckle.
“No, I’m checking off reasons why I shouldn’t do this. Why? Honestly, it’s been years. He’s never picked up and called me until recently. No birthday cards, no presents of any kind. Hell, I would’ve settled for food at one point.”
Bile races up my throat. I can’t do this. I want to know the truth but why do I have to pay the price to learn it?
He grabs me, hugging me tightly. “I don’t know, Reesie Cup. But one thing is for sure, if you don’t go, you won’t either.”
He’s right. I hate it, but he’s got a point. I take his hand and walk toward the shop. He releases me, kissing my temple, and he holds the door open for me.
My mother and I resemble each other so much. There’s no doubt I’m her daughter. When I spot my dad, I’m thrown with how I look like him. It’s crazy. I’d know him anywhere. I stop at the end of the booth, taking a calming breath.
“Hello, Jeffrey.”
He studies me as if imprinting my image to memory. “Reese, you’re more beautiful than any of your photos.” He stands, offering me his hand.
I take it with a tight smile. “Thank you.” I stifle the nausea with a gulp. “I have to say, I always thought I was the spitting image of my mother. Damn, if I didn’t get that wrong.”
He smiles warmly, and I press my lips into a thin line. I want to hate him. No way will I leave here liking him.
