The Prison Warden’s Abandoned Sweetheart
Chapter 1 First Day at the Prison
The Warden Shang Xu walked in without a glance in my direction. He acted as if he did not even know me.
I bit my lip and swallowed the grievance.
"To!"
I answered in the Correction Officer uniform, chest out and head high.
Shang Xu paused and asked, "Do you know what kind of place this is? What awaits you here?"
Before leaving home, my mother had asked me the same question with tears in her eyes.
This was the Extreme North Prison. It held the Empire's most dangerous criminals. They killed without conscience.
My mother had cried, "You might never come back!"
I was not afraid, but the memory of four years ago, when Shang Xu had left me with a cold face and said I was just a burden, made me feel unwilling.
After graduating from the Military Academy, I came here without hesitation.
I would prove him wrong. I was not weak. I could do what he could do.
So I answered loudly, "2046 understands. Ready to sacrifice for the Empire at any time!"
Shang Xu did not reply. He came closer. His tall figure towered over me. His eyes were deep.
He handed me two files. "Then I hope you do not regret it. These are the files for the inmates you will manage."
He turned and left without a word. The familiar fragrance of osmanthus flowers vanished in an instant.
My nose stung. But once I read the inmate files, those romantic thoughts disappeared.
