STUDENT DROWNS IN EDEN ESTUARY AFTER PARTYING ON WEST SANDS

Genevieve was studying English and was a keen dancer.

She performed with the university theatre group.

A spokesperson from the university confirms that she had just completed her first year at St Andrews, and was a popular and gifted student.

Her family from Berkshire, England, has been notified of her death and has issued a statement asking for privacy at this time.

The waters of the Eden Estuary are notorious.

At low tide it can be tempting to cross to the sands of Tentsmuir on the other side of the channel, but there is signage warning of the dangers.

‘The tide comes in quickly here, and it’s a dangerous spot for swimming, with riptides and unpredictable currents,’ said a representative of the local Coastguard.

‘Each year we are called to rescue people in trouble in this area, and unfortunately, this time it ended in tragedy.’
