THE FINE PRINT #3

He didn't care what the contract said about an amicable separation. There was no universe in which Julian Thorne walked away from Elara Vance.

"Are there any final questions before we sign?" Kensington asked, uncapping a heavy Montblanc fountain pen.

Elara finally looked up, her whiskey eyes meeting Julian’s across the table. The air between them felt thick, crackling with an unspoken, deeply volatile energy. She looked terrified, defiant, and incredibly beautiful.

"No questions," Elara whispered, her voice husky.

"No questions," Julian echoed, his deep voice wrapping around the words like velvet.

Kensington slid the document toward Elara, placing the heavy gold pen beside it. "Sign on the last page, initial the bottom of every preceding page."

Elara picked up the pen. Her hand was shaking slightly. She stared at the black ink line at the bottom of the page. This was it. The point of no return. She was legally binding herself to a man she didn't know, surrendering her image to a corporate machine in a desperate bid to save her music.

She took a deep breath, squeezed her eyes shut for a fraction of a second, and then pressed the nib to the paper.

She signed her name in quick, jagged cursive.

Marcus let out a quiet breath of relief. Sarah practically vibrated with vindicated joy.

Kensington slid the document across the mahogany table toward Julian.

Julian didn't hesitate. He didn't read the fine print again. He took the pen and signed his name with a heavy, forceful stroke, the ink carving deeply into the thick cardstock.

"Excellent," Kensington said, closing the folder with a definitive snap. "The contracts will be filed. Welcome to the beginning of a beautiful partnership, Miss Vance, Mr. Thorne."

"We will leak the initial 'spotted together' story to DeuxMoi at noon tomorrow," Sarah announced, immediately shifting into tactical mode.

"Julian, you will be seen picking Elara up from the recording studio at 4:00 PM. Have your driver park where the paparazzi can get a clear shot of you opening the door for her. We want gentlemanly, protective, undeniable chemistry."

"I'll be there," Julian said.

The lawyers began packing their briefcases. Marcus stood up, stretching his back. The oppressive, formal tension in the room began to dissipate, replaced by the frantic energy of logistics and planning.

But Elara remained glued to her chair. Her legs felt like lead. She stared at the closed blue folder in the center of the table, the reality of her new life crashing down on her in suffocating waves.

Suddenly, the chair across from her scraped backward.

Julian stood up. He didn't join the conversation with Sarah and Marcus. He walked slowly around the massive conference table until he was standing directly beside Elara’s chair.

She looked up at him, her heart slamming against her ribs. Up close, the sheer size of him was overwhelming. He completely blocked out the rest of the room, casting her in the warm, heavy shadow of his broad shoulders.

He leaned down, bracing one massive hand on the armrest of her chair, bringing his face dangerously close to hers. The scent of him—cedar, clean linen, and raw, masculine heat—enveloped her completely.

"You did good," Julian murmured, his voice so low that only she could hear it beneath the chatter of the lawyers.

Elara swallowed hard, trying to maintain her cool facade while her pulse hammered a frantic rhythm in her throat. "I did what I had to do to protect my tour."

Julian’s eyes darkened, dropping to her mouth before slowly tracking back up to her wide, whiskey-colored eyes.

"You set your boundaries, Elara," he said softly, the gravel in his voice sending a shiver straight down her spine. "I respect that. I’ll keep you safe from the cameras. I’ll keep you safe from Declan. I’ll play the perfect, obedient fake boyfriend."

He leaned in a fraction of an inch closer, the heat radiating from his chest practically searing her skin.

"But just so we are completely clear," Julian whispered, his breath ghosting over her cheek. "I’m not a safe man. And keeping my hands off you for six months is going to be the hardest damn thing I’ve ever done."

Elara’s breath hitched violently. Her eyes widened, a sudden, terrifying thrill spiking through her bloodstream.

Before she could form a single coherent word in response, Julian straightened up, his face instantly smoothing back into an impassive, cool mask. He buttoned his suit jacket, nodded politely to Marcus, and walked out of the boardroom without looking back.

Elara sat completely frozen, her heart racing uncontrollably as the heavy oak doors clicked shut behind him.

She had thought the contract was her armor. She had thought the rules would protect her.

But as she touched her trembling fingertips to her cheek, where the phantom heat of his breath still lingered, she realized the terrifying truth.

The contract wouldn't protect her from Julian Thorne. Because the greatest threat to her heart wasn't a breach of contract; it was the man who had just signed it.
