15. Kent #2
Looking at her face, he could see that Teddy recognized the truth about her own internal struggle. The realization that her vulnerability had led her to demand that Kent prove his loyalty by disclosing details he'd sworn to hold private was written all over her face.
It was like she saw Kent with complete clarity.
He hoped that she finally understood that his silence hadn't been an act of deception or emotional distance; it had represented integrity belonging to a person who honored his promises and respected the privacy of those he loved.
He'd protected his mother's entitlement to reveal her own story when she chose to tell it, refusing to compromise his word even when Teddy had questioned his motives.
He had stood beside her throughout the harvest season, offering steady support without requiring her to lower her defenses before she was ready.
Teddy took a steady breath. Kent met her focus, his amber eyes holding hers with steadfast devotion.
Under the soft glow of the barn light, he recognized that the wall Teddy had maintained since coming back to Harvest Hollow had truly vanished entirely.
He had known there was something about her when she approached him on Saturday, just before the platform had collapsed.
There was an openness that hadn’t been there before.
And what she was reading now, just seemed to solidify that.
When Kent moved to this valley, he had learned that true strength lay in patience, loyalty, and protection.
Sitting beside Teddy inside the cider barn, he knew they'd reached a threshold where trust didn't represent a risk, but a shared certainty that would endure whatever challenges lay ahead.
The long season of doubt had ended, leaving them ready to face the future together.
Kent watched as Teddy got up to replace the ledger in the cabinet and get out a new one.
Tucked into the lowest alcove of the cabinet, underneath stacked sanctuary volumes and coded arrival files, lay a distinct wooden box bound in aged burgundy ribbon which caught Teddy’s attention.
The polished cherry wood bore no identification marks or administrative numbers, its placement standing apart from the meticulous record system filling upper shelves.
Before Teddy had a chance to take it out, Nell reached inside with measured care, gently lifting the cherry container and placing it onto the workbench before the group.
The sound caught the attention of Dahlia, Junie, and Prue, who stopped what they were doing and focused on Nell.
Nell set her palm gently over the knot of burgundy ribbon, her posture upright yet filled with profound tenderness. There was some sadness in her eyes as she looked from the box on the workbench toward the four sisters.
"The files we opened here tonight belonged to the sanctuary network," Nell stated, her voice calm and unhurried as she spoke. "They recorded the arrivals, the temporary shelter, and the safe passage of women who needed protection."
She hesitated for a moment, resting against the soft silk ribbon without untying the knot. She cleared her throat as if the next part was a struggle to say.
"This volume inside the cherry box is different," Nell continued.
"These pages contain private lineage entries, your mother’s personal reflections, and historical notes that had been set aside specifically for the four of you.
They don't concern the property lines, or deeds, or sanctuary information. "
Junie leaned slightly closer. "Do you mean they’re like diaries?"
Nell offered a soft, reassuring nod. "Among other things, yes.
They belong to you. But tonight's been filled with heavy disclosures and long-buried truths.
The sanctuary's history has been laid open, and the burden of secrecy's been lifted from this farm.
What I can tell you, is that reading these personal reflections requires a quiet mind and a settled heart. "
She looked at each of the four companions in turn, her expression conveying a deep, protective affection.
"The final harvest supper takes place in two days," Nell said.
"When the work in the pumpkin patch and orchard is finished, when the community gathers to celebrate the harvest, and when the cider press settles, and the farm is once again a peaceful haven, that will be the proper time to open this box. You need to be emotionally ready for what you’ll find in here. "
Dahlia looked toward Teddy, then turned back to Nell, her expression softening into acceptance. "We'll wait until after the harvest supper."
Teddy extended her arm, her hand resting over the wooden lid for a brief moment before drawing back. “Okay, Nell. As much as I want to know what that means, I accept that some moments require patience, and rushing into private family reflections is not something to be taken lightly,” Teddy said.
Nell picked up the burgundy-bound container and placed it carefully inside the cabinet. The sanctuary ledgers remained neatly arranged on the open shelves. After closing and locking the cabinet, Nell handed the key to Dahlia.
“As the eldest daughter, I’m entrusting you with the key.” She turned to the other sisters. “And all of you are being entrusted with the secret.”
Hannah, who had been standing quietly to the side while she observed the group, spoke up. "The night air is turning cold, and everybody has a busy day tomorrow. Harvesting begins at dawn. We should all be getting home now."
One by one, the group moved toward the door.
Dahlia, together with Junie and her sister Prue chatted as they walked, their voices low and harmonious as they discussed the preparations for the final harvest weekend.
The strength that had always defined the farmhouse's atmosphere had returned, enriched by the shared history that now united them.
Kent lingered near the back, observing Teddy as they walked together, exiting the cider barn into the cool night.
High above the valley, the sky had deepened into a vast indigo, dotted with brilliant stars that illuminated the orchard ridge.
The fresh aroma of pressed Baldwin apples and woodsmoke drifted through the evening air, wrapping the farmyard in peaceful stillness.
"That was a lot. Are you okay?" Kent asked softly, as they crossed the yard, heading for the warmth of the kitchen.
Teddy turned toward him; her gaze glinting with intensity that made his breath catch. A soft, genuine smile curved her lips, completely free of the defensive caution that had protected her since her arrival.
"I'm good," Teddy answered, and he could see that she really meant it.
Kent stood beside her on the porch, his shoulder lightly brushing hers. When she looked up at him, he took her face in his hands, before leaning close and kissing her forehead.
“Goodnight, Teddy,” he said.
The choice to embrace the future, to stay in this valley, and to claim the life they could build together no longer depended on past secrets. The door stood open, and the final decision rested entirely in her hands.
