Chapter Three

Graham said sleep on it, and I did. The idea stayed with me all week. It wasn't loud, but it didn't go away either.

I don't ask him what it is. That's the strange part.

He told me to think about whether I'd want to hear it, and I decided the safest thing was to not decide.

So I go to work. I keep chipping away at the dishwasher manual and rough out a scaffolding guide.

I go to the gym with Dev and don't tell him anything.

I text Claire back. I do all the normal things, and underneath them the idea sits there, and every night I come home to the warm apartment and the good coffee and Graham, who doesn't bring it up again.

That's the thing about Graham. He can wait.

By Thursday I'm the one who can't stand it. We're on the couch after dinner. He's got a book, I've got my laptop open to nothing. The TV's off. There's a lamp on low behind him and the rest of the room is dark, how he likes it.

"You said you had an idea," I say.

He doesn't look up right away. He finishes his sentence first.

"I do."

"You're really going to make me ask."

"I'm not making you do anything." He closes the book on his thumb. "You asked. That's different."

I laugh, but it comes out thin. "Okay. I'm asking."

He looks at me for a second. Reads my face like he did the night I came home from Meg's. Then he sets the book down on the arm of the couch and turns a little to face me.

"Here's what I think," he says. "I think you've spent your whole life treating this like a test you keep failing. And I think the reason you keep failing isn't the reason you think."

"I know the reason. I'm in my head."

"You're in your head." He nods. "You're so far in your head you leave your own body. You told me that. You float up and watch. And the harder you try to come back down, the higher you go."

"That's a very accurate description of the worst nights of my life."

"So the trying is the problem," he says. "Not the equipment. The trying. You've turned this one thing into the whole scoreboard, and now every time it comes up, your body knows there's a scoreboard, and it freezes. Anybody would freeze. You've made it impossible."

I don't say anything. He's not wrong, and I don't like how not-wrong he is.

"You know what would help," he says, "is if just once it happened when there was nothing on the line. No woman to disappoint. No lamp. No score. Just your body getting to do the thing without you standing over it with a clipboard."

"And how would that happen."

He says it like it's the most ordinary thing in the world.

"I could take the edge off."

* * *

I hear the words and I don't understand them for a second. Then I do, and I still don't move.

"That's," I say. "That's a joke."

"It's not a joke." His voice is exactly the same as it was a minute ago.

That's what keeps me on the couch. There's nothing in it.

No heat, no leer, nothing that makes it strange.

He might as well be offering to take a look at my car.

"You've never had anyone else touch you.

You told me that too. So your body's got no idea what it's even supposed to feel like, because it's never once been allowed to just feel it without you grading it. "

"Graham."

"You don't have to do anything," he says.

"That's the whole point. You don't perform, you don't manage me, there's nobody to lose.

You just sit there and let somebody take care of it for once.

Let somebody who isn't scared of it show you it works.

" He tilts his head. "It's not a big deal.

It's the least complicated thing in the world.

It only got complicated because you made it your whole life. "

And here's the thing I can't explain to anyone, which is that it works on me.

It works because he's right that I've never once been touched.

It works because he says it plain, like a fact you'd be silly to argue with.

It works because I'm twenty-nine and I've spent every one of those years alone with this, and he just offered to not let me be alone with it, and some part of me went yes before the rest of me caught up.

"I don't," I start. "I'm not."

"You're not gay," he says, easy. "I know.

Neither of us is talking about that. This isn't that.

This is me doing you a favor because I can and because I'm not going to make it weird and because you need it and there's nobody else on earth you'd let do it.

" He says the last part gently. Like he's telling me something true about myself that I should already know. "That's just accurate, isn't it."

It is. That's the awful part. There's nobody else on earth I'd let do it.

"Say no and I'll pick the book back up," he says. "No hard feelings. We never talk about it again."

He means it. That's what does it. He means it so completely that saying no feels like the coward's move, feels like the same freezing-up I've done my whole life. He's handing me a way to not be that guy. Just this once.

"Okay," I say.

He doesn't smile. That matters, later, when I think about it. He doesn't smile like he won anything. He just nods, like I finally set down something heavy.

* * *

He looks at me for a second, then says it plainly.

"Take your pants and underwear off."

My stomach drops. I thought maybe he'd do it for me, or at least help. But he just leans back against the arm of the couch, calm and patient, like he's got nowhere else to be.

I stand up. My hands feel clumsy as I undo my belt and pop the button on my jeans. I'm wearing plain black briefs, nothing special. I push both my jeans and underwear down together, step out of them, and leave them on the floor. The air feels cold against my skin.

And then I'm just standing there in front of him with my dick out.

It's small. Even softer than usual from how nervous I am.

It barely sticks out from the patch of dark hair between my legs, the head tucked in a little, the whole thing resting against my balls.

I've always known it was small, but seeing it like this, soft, exposed, in front of someone else, makes it look even smaller than it does when I'm alone.

Graham doesn't react. He just looks at it the same way he looks at everything, steady and unhurried. Then he reaches over and takes it in his hand.

His hand is warm and dry. His fingers close around it gently but firmly, and the heat of his palm swallows most of it.

I can feel the rougher skin of his palm against the sensitive underside, and the way his thumb rests just below the head.

He doesn't squeeze. He just holds it, like he's getting used to the weight of it, and I stop breathing.

Nobody has ever touched me like this. Twenty-nine years and no one else's hand has ever been on my dick but mine.

The second his fingers wrap around it, my whole body goes tight.

My legs feel shaky. I can feel every tiny movement of his hand.

The warmth, the slight callus on his thumb, the steady way he's holding something I've spent my whole life trying to hide.

"Easy," Graham says, calm. "Relax. You're already up in your head. Come back down."

"I can't just—"

"You can. Nothing to manage. I've got it.

" His hand moves, slow and unhurried. He's not squeezing or stroking hard yet.

Just holding me in his warm palm, letting his fingers shift slightly, getting used to the feel of me.

For the first time in my life, the thing is happening and I'm not in charge of whether it happens.

And that, more than his hand, is what starts to bring me back into my body. The permission to not be in charge.

I get hard fast. Embarrassingly fast. Faster than I ever do alone.

It happens before I can think about it, before I can get in my own way.

One second I'm soft in his hand and the next I'm thickening against his fingers, filling out what little room there is.

When I'm fully hard, he looks down at it again.

It doesn't look like much. Even hard, it's barely four inches, and most of that is in his hand now.

The shaft is slim, the head flushed dark and shiny at the tip, and there's still plenty of room for his fingers to wrap around the base without any trouble.

Next to his hand it looks even smaller. Like something that was never really built for this kind of attention.

I've spent my whole life knowing it was small, but seeing it like this, stiff and exposed in someone else's grip, makes it feel smaller than it ever has.

Graham doesn't flinch. He just looks at it for a second, calm and steady, then says it like he's reading the weather.

"You're small."

He says it while his hand is still wrapped around it.

While he can feel exactly how much of it fits in his palm.

While it's twitching against his fingers, hard and desperate and obviously not very big.

No one has ever said it out loud like this.

Not while they were touching it, not while it was hard, not while they had the proof right in their hand.

It should destroy me. Instead it lands like something heavy being taken off my chest. Because he's not disgusted.

He's not being nice about it. He's not pretending it's anything other than what it is.

"Yeah," I say. My voice is wrecked. "I know."

"It's fine," he says. "It doesn't have to be a problem.

It's only a problem because you decided it was.

" His hand keeps moving, slow and steady, and I'm gone in a different way now, not up in my head, but down in my body, all of me crowded into the small, hard fact of my dick in his hand.

"Look at you. You're right here. That's all it took. "

I'm right here. I am. For the first time it's working, and it's working because I'm not the one making it work, and I could cry from how simple it turns out to be once somebody else takes it off my hands.
