Chapter Ten

The key doesn't go back in the dish.

Graham takes it from the lock after the morning check and slips it into his own pocket like it's always belonged there.

The tiny pink cage stays on. The plug stays in.

The seamless panties and the camisole stay on under my clothes when I leave for work.

He doesn't say "just at night" anymore. He doesn't have to.

The quiet is the new normal, and the normal is getting bigger.

I stand in the bathroom mirror with the cage pressing snug against the front of the panties and the plug a low, steady weight inside me.

I feel the first-thing stir of me press up and give out against the plastic, like it does now.

The plastic holds everything small and still.

I don't reach down to test it. I already know what happens.

Graham is at the kitchen island when I come out. He looks up from his phone the same way he always does, steady and unhurried.

"Turn around," he says.

I do. He checks the waistband of the panties through my jeans, the way the fabric sits flat over the cage. His hand stays there a second longer than it needs to.

"Good," he says. "You'll be out most of the day. The plug will remind you. The cage will too. You don't have to think about it. Just let it do the work."

I nod. The words land warm. They always do.

He reaches into his pocket and shows me the key for a second, then puts it away again.

"This stays with me now," he says. "No more taking it off when you feel like it. The quiet works better when it's not negotiable. You'll see."

I don't argue. The part of me that would have is smaller than it was yesterday.

The cage is doing what he said it would.

The noise stays down. I can go to work and sit through meetings and answer emails without my head doing laps about what happened with Nora or what didn't happen. The lock took that off my hands.

"Text me if it gets loud," he says. "Otherwise I'll see you tonight."

I go.

Work is the same building, the same desk, the same screen.

The difference is under the clothes. Every time I shift in the chair the plug moves.

Every time I stand up the cage presses. Nobody can see it.

The seamless panties keep everything flat and hidden.

I look like a guy who edits manuals for a living.

I am a guy who edits manuals for a living. The other part is handled.

Mid-morning a text from Dev comes in.

gym tonight? or are you still "retired" lol

I stare at it longer than I need to. The old answer would have been yes, because the gym was one of the places I went to try to be the version of me that could do the things I kept failing at.

Now the cage is on and the plug is in and the quiet is there, and the idea of lifting while Graham's key is in his pocket feels like the wrong kind of effort.

maybe tomorrow, I send back.

He sends a shrug emoji. I put the phone face down and go back to the dishwasher manual. The sentences stay short. The warnings stay clear. The midnight guy with wet hands would still be able to read it without getting hurt. That part of me still works.

By lunch the plug has settled into a constant low pressure. The cage has too. I eat at my desk and don't reach down once. The quiet holds.

Graham texts in the afternoon.

home by seven. we'll go over the new routine.

I type back ok and don't ask what the new routine is. I already know it isn't going to be the old one.

He is waiting when I get home.

The apartment smells like the good soap and something he roasted earlier. He is at the island with two glasses and the small black box he keeps the toys in. The key is still in his pocket. I can feel it even though I can't see it.

"Strip to the underwear," he says. Calm. Like he's asking me to hang up my jacket.

I do it in the living room. The jeans come off. The button-down. The camisole stays. The seamless panties stay. The tiny pink cage and the plug stay. I stand there in the low light and feel the air on my skin and the plastic holding everything exactly where it is.

Graham looks at me like he's checking a measurement. Then he nods once.

"From now on we do this every night," he says. "Cage check. Plug check. Then the rest."

He has me bend over the arm of the couch. His fingers are warm and steady when he checks the plug, like he showed me the first time. It seats right. Nothing slips. He gives it a light press and I feel the pressure move deeper for a second, then settle again.

"Good," he says. "You're taking it well. We'll size up again soon."

He has me stand. The check on the cage is quick. The ring is snug behind everything. The little pink shell is still the right size. My cock is soft inside it the way it stays now unless something makes it try. It doesn't get far.

He sits on the couch and pats the cushion next to him.

"Sit."

I do. The plug shifts when I settle. The cage presses against the seam of the panties.

Graham pours the second glass and hands it to me. The whiskey is the good one.

"You did well today," he says. "Out in the world. Caged. Plugged. Nobody knew. That's the point. The quiet lets you be a person out there. The rest of it stays here."

I drink. The burn is clean.

He sets his glass down and looks at me, warm and plain.

"We're going to make it easier for you to stay in it," he says. "The name. The way you see yourself when you're here. The things you say to yourself when the old noise tries to come back. It helps. You'll see."

He reaches into the box and takes out a small tube of something and a pack of wipes. Then a compact mirror, the kind that folds shut. For half a second I think I catch a faint different scent on the wipes. Something soft and floral that doesn't belong to Graham or to me. Then it's gone.

"Makeup isn't about looking like someone else," he says. "It's about seeing the difference. Just a little. Enough that when you look in the mirror you remember which version you're in."

He has me sit on the edge of the couch. The mirror is small in his hand. He opens it and holds it so I can see my own face. His other hand is steady when he puts a tiny amount of something under my eyes, then a little color on my lips. Nothing dramatic. Just enough to change the light on my skin.

"Look," he says.

I do. The face in the mirror is still mine. The eyes are a little softer. The mouth is a little fuller. The difference is small and it lands heavy anyway.

"The name," he says. "Thea."

The word lands between us. I feel something small and sharp move in my chest. For a second I almost say no, or ask him not to, or tell him it feels too far. The feeling is there and then it's gone before I can hold onto it.

He watches me.

"Say it," he says, quiet.

I open my mouth. Nothing comes out at first. Then I say it.

"Thea."

My voice comes out smaller than I meant it to.

He nods like that was the right answer.

"Again."

"Thea."

He puts the mirror down and sets his hand on the back of my neck, warm and steady.

"That's you when you're here," he says. "The part that doesn't have to chase anything. The part that gets to be taken care of. The part that already knows what it is."

I don't push back. The name feels like the cage feels. Like something that was already true and just needed to be said out loud.

My phone goes off on the counter. Two buzzes against the wood, the ceiling lights up and goes dark, and neither of us moves for it.

A year ago a phone going off at night was a door I got up and ran to.

Now it's a sound in the other room. Whoever it is, they're texting Teddy.

There's no Teddy on this couch right now.

There's a face with a little color worked into it and a name I've said twice, and the phone can buzz for the other one as long as it wants.

He has me kneel between his legs the way we do now. The camisole rides up when I settle. The plug shifts. The cage stays tight and useless against the front of the panties.

"Service first," he says. "Then the rest."

I take him out. His cock is heavy in my hand, the way it always is. Bigger than anything I'll ever have. The contrast is the point.

That's what I tell myself it's for, the contrast, the lesson in it.

But there's a second under that where the lesson isn't in the room at all and I just want him.

Not smaller-than. Not next-to. Want. The size of him in my hand and the wanting are the same size tonight, and none of it is about a woman I'm getting ready for or a thing I'm being taught.

I want the cock because it's his and I want to be the one who has it.

It's a harder thing to set down than it was a few weeks ago.

I set it down anyway. It's the training.

It's what my body's learned to want because he trained it to, and a trained thing isn't the same as a wanted thing. I hold onto that and get back to work.

I lick the shaft like he likes, then lower, where he showed me last time.

He lets me work for a minute, then his hand goes to the back of my head and sets the pace.

Slow. Then deeper. Then slower again. I feel every inch of him on my tongue, the weight, the heat, the way my jaw has to open wider than it wants to.

The pink shell takes what little rises in me and gives nothing back.

The plug moves when I clench without meaning to.

I lick where he guides me and thank him like he likes, quiet and steady, until he eases me off and pulls me up into his lap.

The cage presses against his thigh. The plug is a constant low reminder. He keeps his arm around me and lets the room settle.

"We're going to train the other part too," he says after a while. His voice is almost offhand. "The part that takes. You've been learning with the plugs. Tonight we start with something bigger. Something that actually fills you the way your little cock never could."
