Chapter 61 The Song of the Void

I was on my knees, the pressure of the Envoy’s presence feeling like the weight of the entire ocean.

I could hear the Reclaimed screaming in the infirmary, their neural grafts reacting to the Envoy’s frequency.

But then, the doors to the Great Hall opened.

Leo and Liam walked out. They didn’t look like children anymore.

Their movements were synchronized, their faces calm and ethereal.

They weren’t afraid. They looked at the Mercury Envoy as if they were looking at an old, tiresome teacher.

“The Harvest is cancelled,” Leo said, his voice overlapping with Liam’s in that strange, haunting harmony.

“The seed has changed,” Liam added. “It’s no longer your code.

It’s ours.”

The Envoy tilted its head, the horizontal slit of light turning a deep, angry red.

“Impossible. Biological vessels cannot rewrite the Prime Sequence. You are data. You are storage.”

“We are Life,” the twins said together.

They reached out their hands, and the white light that had filled the Extraction Chamber returned, but this time it wasn’t coming from a machine.

It was coming from them. A sphere of golden-silver energy expanded from their fingertips, pushing against the Envoy’s mercury armor.

The Envoy stumbled back, its liquid surface beginning to boil.

“A breach... the resonance is inverted! You are destroying the yield!”

“The yield is already gone,” Leo said, a small, sad smile touching his lips.

“We gave it to the world. We gave it to the Reclaimed. We gave it to the mountain.”

The golden-silver light intensified, and the Envoy began to dissolve.

It didn’t die; it simply broke apart into a thousand droplets of liquid mercury that soaked into the ash-covered earth.

The pressure lifted. The sky stopped shimmering.

The silence returned.

But the twins didn’t celebrate.

They collapsed into my arms, their bodies shaking, their eyes returning to that dull, human brown.

“We chased it away, Mama,” Leo whispered.

“But it told the others. It told the Hive.”
