Sutton and I stumble into the living room, laughing and kissing as I pull the key from the door. We are so caught up in each other’s bodies that we don’t notice the boxes piled by the door until Sutton backs into one and windmills her arms in an attempt to stay vertical.
I snake an arm behind her back and haul her to my chest.
“What the fuck?” she mutters, spinning to take in the cluttered living room.
There’s junk everywhere.
Boxes are stacked all around the room. Some taped closed, others filled with things sticking out.
We both pause and turn to each other.
“You don’t think…?”
I nod. “Yeah, I think so.”
She squeals as she jumps into my arms and kisses every inch of my face.
I spin her around as she shouts, “Huzzah.”
“Typical,” Dillon’s raspy voice sounds from the other side of the room.
Sutton and I stop spinning to face him. He’s carrying his guitar case in one hand and a pillow in the other. He wears his usual look of arrogance and disdain as he stares us down, but this time, there’s something else in his expression. Maybe a hint of defeat. Maybe even sadness.
He’s finally doing it.
He’s leaving.
I want to shout for joy.
To scream my happiness for the entire world to hear.
But I don’t. I don’t say a word. I won’t, either.
I won’t risk him changing his mind out of spite.
So instead, I step out of the doorway and let him pass me.
He doesn’t do his usual shoving his shoulder into mine or his douchey remarks. He doesn’t make a single sound until he reaches the door.
“I’ll be gone in the morning… You win.”
I turn to look at him.
His hand rests on the door handle. “You’ve got Sutton and the house. Congratulations.” And with that, he steps out.
Sutton quickly drags me down the hall and into her bedroom. She wastes zero time before she pounces on me, knocking me back onto the bed.
She straddles my thighs as she leans down to run her mouth over mine. “We did it.”
“One more night and we’re free.” I run my hands up and down her curves, savoring every touch.
“It feels surreal,” she admits. “I never thought this day would come.”
“Me either. But I’m so damn happy it did.”
We’ve been waiting months for this day. Well, even longer if you count months of my pining after her from afar.
We can finally just be together without having to look over our shoulders every second for her scorned ex-boyfriend. We’re free.
Sutton sits up, and I brace myself on my forearms. She’s radiant. Her face beaming with pure happiness as she stares down at me, pushing her golden locks out of her face.
She’s mine. All mine. Some days, I have a tough time wrapping my head around that fact. That the woman I’m obsessed with—who I love—feels the same.
I don’t know what I did to deserve her, but I’ll never take it for granted.
She wiggles her brows. “Victory fuck?”
