Chapter 8

Ector

Out of all the names she could’ve chosen, she named him Ollie?”

“I told you not to name him.” I say while putting her down on her feet.

“Stop it, Ector. We can’t just leave him here.”

“Yeah, stop it, Ector.” Ollie says, looking at me with an evil smile on his lips and something shifting in his eyes. He looks at me in a way which he doesn’t want Genevieve to notice. And his attitude doesn’t go unnoticed.

I’ll trust my gut. Something is off with this, with him. He came out of nowhere, screaming at us. Something about this doesn’t sit right with me.

“Do you want an apple? Poor boy, you must be hungry. I had some berries too but I shared them with Ector.” Genevieve says.

“You nasty fairy boy, you took my berries!” Ollie says in a furious tone.

Genevieve looks at me with a big smile. It’s obvious she thinks this is hilarious.

“Genevieve offered them to me. And they were delicious, the best berries I’ve ever had actually.” I say, only to provoke him. Am I actually arguing with a squirrel?

“Are you cheating on me?!” He says, putting his hands over his chest, dropping his jaw and falling to the ground. “I can’t believe you did this!” He performs the act while glancing towards Genevieve.

Genevieve starts laughing and so does Ollie.

“You’re so angry all the time, fairy boy thing. Be happy for one damn second! You don’t need to be serious.” He says while doing odd DJ moves with his hands.

“Can we please go now?” I tell Genevieve.

“Can we just let the poor squirrel eat?”

Oh my fucking goddess.

“Okay, stay there with your new best friend and I’ll go on my own.” I answer with irritation as my patience is being tested. But it doesn’t take long before the guilt creeps in.

She said she wanted to get there as soon as possible yet she keeps getting distracted every other second.

This is why I do stuff on my own, I don’t have to worry about anyone else and their problems. A squirrel is the last thing on my list to take fucking care of.

Ollie must sense the frustration radiating from me, my jaw clenching and my knuckles turning white.

“Ector doesn’t seem to like me so, thanks for the apple, bye!

” He says, quickly running away from us.

“See, he wasn't looking for a name nor to follow us, he only wanted your damn food. Stop being so naive, Genevieve. I get that you love animals and nature, not all animals want a friend.” I breathe.

“And you are not some magical animal princess out of a fairytale that sings and they come to you. So please, focus. Not everyone wants the best for you, we live in a cruel world full of magical spells and curses. I beg you, at least try to not get so distracted.”

Her cheeks turn rosy, and her eyes won’t meet mine. Grabbing her bag, she walks right past me while staring at the dirty ground.

I’m just like my father.

I spoke those mean words to her when she hadn't done anything wrong, she was only being nice and thoughtful. She was only trying to help an animal. She did not deserve that.

I’m an asshole.
