Chapter 25

Genevieve

Waking up to the sound of screaming and not finding Ector by my side leaves me in instant horror. Suppressing my deep fear of the dark, I force myself to stand steady on my feet and walk outside, not having a clue what I will meet.

“Ector?” His name leaves my lips as fear spreads through me.

He looks back at me with blood splattered all over his face. And before seconds pass by, a dagger goes through his body with his eyes looking straight into mine.

I ran faster than I ever have, almost like someone was chasing me. I stopped by his side and in an instant, I fell to my knees. “Ector...”

“Thank you for making my last moments more memorable than all my life together, sweetheart.”

“Don’t you dare leave me!” I cry out. “You can’t leave, please!”

“I kept my promise, the promise I made with myself the moment I laid my eyes on you.” Tears prickled in the corner of his eyes, blood spilling from his body.

“What promise? What are you talking about, Ector?”

“I had to protect you, even if it meant by death.” He says, his eyes closing.

“Ector! You can’t let your eyes fall shut!” Panic grabs me, my now bloody hands going through my hair. “Ector! Please don’t leave me!”

Not even acknowledging that the man beside us was still looking at me, desperately reaching for the dagger in Ector’s hand, he now had my full attention.

At that moment, everything started falling into place. Ector had told me about this. The dagger his father used all over his back, all over his body. He had empty eyes, eyes that showed no depth.

I reached for the dagger before he got the chance to grab it. “Is this what you want?” I ask with pleading eyes, acting like I feel sorry for him.

He nodded, one hand gripping his own bleeding throat, the other reaching for the blade in my hand.

Looking at the dagger full of blood, I wanted to throw it into the woods, far, far away from the three of us. But instead, just as I realize that Ector’s lifeless body is lying right before me, I stab his hand.

I stab his hand once, twice until I launch forward and stab him right in the heart. My body doesn’t stop, it keeps moving on its own as a horrific scream leaves my lungs.

Tears are pouring down my face as blood keeps splattering all over my new dress.

Suddenly, two hands land on my shoulders. My body spins around with the dagger in the air, ready to protect myself. But as I realize that it’s a woman standing behind me, I slowly lower it again.

“Who are you?!” I spit out, looking like a monster that had escaped its horror story.

“I’m.” She hesitates. “Darcelle.”

“What are you doing here?” Confusion coated my voice, my eyes wide open and blood was splattered all over my face.

“I can bring this young man back to life.” She says, slowly lowering herself to sit beside me.

I lower the dagger and look at her in confusion.

“Give me your hands.” She demands.

I hesitate only for a second before I give in.

Taking my hands in her own, she gently presses our palms against Ector’s solar plexus.

“By the light of the silver moon, bring forth magic, let it bloom. With a dagger that caused this pain, let it flow away with the power of moving rain. The hands of a pink tulip, I hold tight, don’t let her break this dark night.

My power I use to heal these wounds, I call upon the goddess that rules the magic of our moon.

With my words, this wish is free, please listen to me and mote it be. ” She speaks.

A dark crimson red light starts spreading around us until it suddenly disappears.

“No, this isn’t right!” Her words come out in a rush as she shakes his shoulders.

“Ector!” I scream out for him to wake up, but nothing happens.

Looking at her palms in fear, she slowly backs away from us. “No, no, no.”

“What have you done?!” I scream out.

“I...”

“You told me you could save him!” I break her off.

“Please, listen.” She begs, but my body answers for me, throwing the dagger right at her. In a split second, her body disappears, and the silver blade falls to the ground.

“You lied!” I say out loud even though she’s no longer there.

I grab the dagger where it fell to the ground and run back to Ector’s side. “Ector, please.” No answer. “Ector, come back to me!” I sob before another deep scream leaves my mouth.

“Ector!” I scream one last time as the realization hits me that he is truly gone. He isn’t breathing, his body is turning colder, and his eyes are closed.

Hitting his chest with all the power I can find within, I hope to get his heart to beat again, but it doesn’t.

“Ahhh!” The deafening scream leaves my lungs as I place my body beside him, snuggling up to his side.

“Don’t leave me.” I beg, feeling the moment his soul leaves his body.

“Please...” My body forms to a ball, my head placed on his chest in hope to hear his heart beat one last time.

It doesn’t take long until my body gives in, and I fall asleep beside him out of exhaustion.
